Question about Madonna's No. 1 songs?
So Madonna put together her first Greatest Hits in 1990 on "The Immaculate Collection" album.
"Holiday"
Which was the criteria to select these songs?
Were all those songs No. 1? Billboard only? Or was the title just a name? Or were they No. 1 only in the States? Were there any other No. 1 singles not included?
Just like other fans, I miss some tracks there like Dress You Up & Causin' a Commotion which were heavily played at radio stations and TV video programs.
What about the GHV2?
I read Janet included some tracks which were No. 1 only in Japan.
If Madonna had to make a compilation like that (including every No. 1 song), how many and which songs should be there?

For Immaculate collection she left off the following hits:
Angel: "5" on U.S and U.K charts
Dress You Up: "5" on U.S and U.K charts
True Blue: "3" on U.S charts, "1" U.K on charts
Who's That Girl: "1" on U.S and U.K charts
Causing A Commotion: "2" on U.S charts, "4" on U.K charts
Keep It Together: "8" on U.S charts
Hanky Panky: "10" on U.S charts, "2" on U.K charts
For GHV2 she left off the following hits:
This Used To Be My Playground: "1" on U.S charts, "2" on U.K charts
Rain: "14" on U.S charts, "7" on U.K charts
I'll Remember: "2" on U.S charts, "7" on U.K charts
You'll See: "6" on U.S charts, "5" on U.K charts
You Must Love Me: "18" on U.S charts, "10" on U.K charts
American Pie: "29" on U.S charts, "1" on U.K charts
So I don't know exactly why Madonna chose the songs she did (some songs on GHV2 were even flops). However 3 songs, "This Used To Be My Playground", "I'll Remember", and "You'll See" were already included on a ballad compilation called "Something To Remember" which might be why they aren't on GHV2. As for Immaculate I don't have the slightest idea why so many big hits weren't on it.

I'm guessing they were based on number of airplay or single sales, cause #1's like Who's That Girl were not on it. There was an EP called Holiday Collection which included Who's That Girl, True Blue, Causing a Commotion and Holiday though. The design is the same as the CD, but maroon coloured.

I imagine they were chosen based on their staying power, and not necessarily their chart placing. After all, Who's That Girl (a #1 hit) and Causing a Commotion (#2) are not there, but Holiday (#16) and Borderline (#10) are, because they are more imbedded in the public's consciousness as relates to Madonna's music than some other songs that were techinically bigger hits.
hell, more people know "urning Up than they do Causing A Commotion. also, Who's That Girl may have been too soon a reminder of the painful sting of the failure of the movie.
even in 1990.
honestly could have done without Rescue Me, though I love it, and they could have thrown on 2 or 3 extra hits (Who's That Girl and Dress You Up at the very least).
and there's absolutely no need for the entire thing to have been remixed in Q-Sound by Shep Pettibone.

oh, and GHV2 was just some half-assed thing that WB put together. she didn't even want to do another GH album, but they insisted, which is why there wasn't a new song included. or even an attempt to spruce up an album track in order to promote it, only some officially promo'd megamixes by the likes of Thunderpuss.
and Celebration is just a fucking mess.

What I think the Immaculate Collection should have been:
1. Holiday (Normal Single Edit) 2. Lucky Star (Q-Sound Remix) 3. Boarderline (Normal Single Edit) 4. Like A Virgin (Normal Version) 5. Material Girl (Music Video Version) 6. Crazy For You (Normal Radio Edit) 7. Into The Groove (Q-Sound Remix) 8. Dress You Up (Possibly Remixed) 9. Live To Tell (Normal Single Edit) 10. Papa Don't Preach (Normal Single Edit) 11. Open Your Heart (Normal Single Edit) 12. La Isla Bonta (Normal Version Edited) 13. Who's That Girl (Normal Version) 14. Like A Prayer (Normal Version Edited) 15. Express Yourself (Q-Sound Remix) 16. Cherish (Normal Radio Edit) 17. Vogue 18. Justify My Love 19. Rescue Me (Edited, full version on 12") 20. Another new song

I agree with GHV2. So many big songs were left off and the ordering is terrible and too much was edited. They should have put them in order.
I like Celebration but I have 2 problems with it:
1. The songs are horribily ordered (They start out with the biggest hits then it goes down hill starting with Holiday 2. Way too much edits because of time constraints

My main problems with Celebration are:
1) the mastering is terrible. Most notably, the clicking sound throughout "Music," they cut off the first beat of the intro to "Dress You Up" and "Revolver" was mixed incorrectly, with the vocals too low. they didn't even bother to fix "Die Another Day" which is taken straight from the American Life CD, with the same error in the indexing so you only get half of the first beat. and you can hear "American Life" still fading out as "Hollywood" begins.
2) some of the new edits are downright sloppy, for example the "Express Yourself" remix and "Cherish." in the latter, it's so poorly done that it changes the lyrics to something that doesn't even make sense. 3) the bizarre choices of album versions vs. single edits vs. Q-sound remixes from The Immaculate Collection.
they should have gone with all album versions or single/radio edits/versions. preferrably the latter, to fit more songs on and to have the songs in their hit versions.
nevermind the DVD. that's a whole other mess.
I hope in a few years, she'll grant WB permission to put something better together as the go-to compilation on the shelves. She obviously wasn't interested, and neither were WB at the time. maybe next time they'll do it right and hand it over to Rhino. they should have done that in the first place. same story with her remastered albums.
as it is, Celebration is downright embarrassing as a professional release.

But, why didn't they make a double album for the Immaculate Collection? It was justified since some of the edits were horrible e.g. La Isla Bonita (which doesn't even ends) and there were more than 7 songs left out.
Angel, Dress You Up, True Blue, Who's That Girl, Causing A Commotion, Keep It Together, Hanky Panky. Not to mention singles like Burning Up which were IMO stronger than other songs on the CD
Didn't 2-CD compilations exist at that time?
Now, going back to all her the No. 1 songs...

I think it says something about Madonna's career that she could make one of the most celebrated greatest hits of all time and still leave out songs like True Blue or Causing a Commotion. 2012: The Queen Returns

The 'Celebration' edit of 'Erotica' is SHOCKING!!! They really messed up with that compilation. Sloppy. Very sloppy. I only consider 'The Immacualte Collection' her true greatest hits, it's the only one she had any imput on, plus the artwork is DIVINE! [Edited 3/30/12 1:16am] [Edited 3/30/12 1:17am] 3121... Even if this is true, it ends up being something of a self-fulfilling prophecy. With The Immaculate Collection being such a success (it's her biggest-selling album), any song not included is going to have less staying power than one immortalized (as it were) on this album. That edit makes me cringe! Whoever did it edited it on the wrong beat. I could have edited it better myself using Adobe Audition or Acid Pro.
I still can't believe the glitches on Music and the terrible edit on La Isla Bonita. She actually says "I will always Cherish to" because of the way they edited it. You'd think that they could easily re-do this collection and fix the errors. It really mars her catalogue and I never play it for that reason.
I think they should have definitely done a 3 disk collection. She has 47 or 48 top 40 hits with WB and they left sooo many off. Here is my track list:
Disk 1 – Madonna – You Can Dance "Everybody" "Burning Up" "Holiday" "Lucky Star" "Borderline" "Like a Virgin" "Material Girl" "Crazy for You" "Angel" "Into the Groove" "Dress You Up" "Live to Tell" "Papa Don't Preach" "True Blue" "Open Your Heart" "La Isla Bonita" "Who's That Girl" "Causing a Commotion" "Spotlight"
Disk 2 – Like A Prayer - Evita "Like a Prayer" "Express Yourself" "Cherish" "Oh Father" "Keep It Together" "Vogue" "Justify My Love" "Rescue Me" "This Used to Be My Playground" "Erotica" "Deeper and Deeper" "Rain" "I'll Remember" "Secret" "Take a Bow" "Bedtime Story" "Human Nature" "You'll See" "You Must Love Me"
Disk 3 – Ray of Light – Hard Candy (plus new tracks) "Frozen" "Ray of Light" "The Power of Good-Bye" "Beautiful Stranger” "Music" "Don't Tell Me" "What It Feels Like for a Girl" "Die Another Day" "American Life" "Nothing Fails "Hung Up" "Sorry" "Get Together" "Jump" "4 Minutes"(featuring Justin Timberlake) "Give It 2 Me" "Miles Away" "Celebration" "Revolver"(featuring Lil Wayne) "Keep in mind that I'm an artist...and I'm sensitive about my shit."--E. Of all the retarded errors on Celebration, I think this one is the most ridiculous of them all. Why did they even bother to come up with a new edit to replicate the Q-Sound mix on "The Immaculate Collection" when they already used those versions for several other songs? Why not just go ahead and use that version for Cherish too?
