Okay, all these "old school" and "classic disco" threads have got me thinking about sampling. There are purists who can't get down with this, but I like it. To me, it reminds folks of where this stuff came from. (And it gives me the chance to reminisce... biggrin)

Anyway, I've got tons. For starters...

Das EFX- "They Want EFX"
Sample: James Brown's "Blind Men Can See It" (from blaxploitation flick Black Caesar)

Jay-Z-"Brooklyn's Finest"
Sample: Ohio Player's "Ecstasy"

My favorite samples are "Kiss Me Back" by Digital Underground and "Me, Myself & I" by De La Soul. Both use a sample of one of my favorite Funkadelic songs "(Not Just) Knee Deep".

Alot of my friends love hip-hop but they don't always know that they're really listening to a sample. So,being an Old School fanatic, I like to surprise them and play them the original song. When Dre and Snoop came out with "Ain't Nuthin But A G Thang" back in 92,they were completely surprised when I played them Leon Haywood's 1975 song "I Wanna Do Something Freaky To You".

For the most part though,I don't like sampling.I think it's gotten out of hand.It used to be,rappers would just sample a small part of a song, nowadays, they basically sample the WHOLE song. Many of todays R&B singers (Janet,Mariah,Angie Stone, etc) do the same thing. It's artistic laziness!

I agree with you on that one, i don't particularly like sampling due to old skool songs had a lot of hard work put into them, some (slow jams) people sang from the heart and sang about personal feelings and problems such as the song done by the Temps How I Wish that it Would Rain, the man who wrote that song committed suicide and that song was about him and his lady. I wish the newer generation would step away from the machines and computers and actually use some talent.

I agree with both you guys. A lot of new music today is either crap or a rehash of old school music. Old school music will never go out of style.

I do hear where you purists are coming from. I'm mean, some of the younger people get it quite twisted, especially when samples get recycled. For instance, Biggie's cover of Debarge's "Stay with Me" for his "One More Chance." The kids who grew up listening to Biggie got to hear this sample once again via Ashanti's "Foolish." By this point, I bet lots of them were thinking: "How dare Ashanti jack Biggie's sample!"

I mean Prince did sample a little of James Brown (the guitar in the beginning of Kiss) but Prince still made his own music as well with INSTRUMENTS.
