after the 2-LP Faces album failed to set the world on fire,"Let's Groove" was a much-needed hit for Earth Wind & Fire. The song is undeniably catchy and sounded so good on the radio in the fall of '81.It features the "classic" EW&F sound, but updated slightly for the 80s.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Can somebody tell me who's the woman singing in the background @ the end?

A mysterious lady called Ms. Pluto
Also can be heard on the third trck of the album. She sounds like one of the Emotions imo.

Raise is quite possibly EW&F's best album of the 80s....although 1987's Touch The World also features some of their strongest music of that decade.

SoulAlive, I think I am correct in recalling a previous post of yours saying that FACES was just too long, and too much of similar sounding music....for whatever reason, that album has always been one of my favorites, quite possibly, because it was not the critical and saleswise success that their previous releases were, and so, you didnt constantly hear those songs being "played to death" on the radio....as would have been September, or Shining Star, Reasons, etc....
I think what I have always liked about FACES was that it had much more of those message type songs EWF was known for.....Take it To the Sky (regardless of the fact that some folk say it echoes TTWOTW just a little too much), Turn It into Something Good, Pride, Let Me Talk....whereas Raise does not quite capture that essence of EWF.
The one thing I will agree with is that Raise is certainly more snappy, and crisp sounding...songs like Lady Sun, You are a Winner and Changing Times burst off the Disc ........horns a-blazing, handclaps, bass and vocals..whereas FACES I have to admit is a little more smooth, less risk-taking, music-wise, I suppose, and more pretty (Sailaway, You Went Away, Win Or Lose, for example...). Last year,I bought that Faces remaster from BBR Records and it has made me appreciate the album much more.I agree with your assessment of both albums, especially the part about Raise sounding "crisp".

Its most likely Wanda Hutchinson of The Emotions, who was or still is married to Wayne Vaughn, who was the co-writer of "Lets Groove" & several other great EWF tracks. "Raise!" is probably tied with "I Am" for being my favorite EWF album...But you really can't go wrong with any of their LPs. Again, R.I.P. Roland Bautista. Exiles of the Nation

I like the Raise and Powerlight albums best from EWF in the 80's. The whole Raise album slapped ass. Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

I was kinda disappointed with Powerlight. It seemed as if they were finally running out of ideas. The first two singles are good, but the rest of it? Sounds like they're just going through the motions.

"Fall In Love With Me" "Side By Side" "Something Special" "Speed Of Light"
all great rotations from "Powerlight"
