Sam Cooke ~ Mary Lou {in color!}

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

She has great taste. Not familiar with Johnnie Taylor though. Will do research.

Edit Oh he is the guy who did Disco Lady. I know that tune.

Johnnie never really crossed over to the pop audience. He had a few pop hits like Who's Making Love, I Believe In You, & Disco Lady. But he was popular with the older black audience. For awhile, he was the biggest act on Stax as far as R&B radio was concerned. Johnnie got his start through Sam. Johnnie was Sam's replacement in both the Highway QC's and The Soul Stirrers. Sam also recorded Johnnie's first secular records on his SAR label.
