Who Likes Gospel? idk why, been into it quite a bit lately. I love the passion of the voices and arrangements my grandparents used to be a part of a gospel choir when i was younger. Didn't think much of it then, but know it think it's quite awesome.

i do! love gospel music. does much more for me than any other genre. i prefer the contemporary stylings more so, not a lot of the choir based groups. Fred Hammond is a personal fave. Men of Standard (now defunct) had a good run too. but yeah, LOVE IT!!

Hmm, you not into Mahalia? I'm sure she's got some stuff that'll win you over too...

Sister's guitar was the primary reason that connected everything together.
I like Mahalia, her work with Duke Ellington is top notch.

Sister Tharpe seems to be a mixture of a lot of stuff if the only thing that was different was that it remained gospel but her music was mainly blues, predated rock stuff. Mahalia's had something of a jazz/blues context with her's but both spoke the Gospel.

Big fan of Gospel. I hope one day Chicago WGN and the Chicago affiliates of ABC/CBS release DVD's on all the good Gosple music they aired from the 1950's through the 1980's. Good music... superb music.

Classic record. Isn't this song one of or the first gospel song to crossover to R&B FM radio?

It's funny: I'm a huge fan of gospel even though I can't stand most of Jesus's followers and am at a crossroads at to whether I believe in a God or not anymore.

Mahalia sings so sweetly, so convincingly that you can't help but want to go. I have doubts, but that's always the struggle we face. I want to know my beloved mom is not gone forever, and that I will see her again when I kick off this earth. I pray God is a loving and forgiving God, that will welcome us home... despite what some of his earthly followers preach. "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I'm not a Christian, but I relate to the sentiments conveyed in most of the gospel music I listen to, because their theme is usually universal, not just Christian oriented.
Some of them go hand & hand with Sly Stone's music, its about self uplifting rather than "converting".

This is how I fell in love with this woman, I have NEVER heard such a guitar playing before.
She lets loose @ 1:24. This is precisely the moment where I officially became an admirer of her music.

As many of you know, I'm a pretty big Gospel fan. I love me some James Cleveland, Kirk Franklin, Yolanda Adams, Albertina Walker, and Mary Mary.
This is one of my favorite Gospel tracks now: **--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••--**--••**--••-

Here's some more songs. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I don't have that problem. I just choose to not take religion all too seriously. God is in your heart and your spirit. You don't have to listen to a minister to get The Word. Just play "Optimistic" or "Walk Around Heaven" or "Somebody Bigger than You & I" and you're set. To me, gospel is not so different from other forms of music. This music gives comfort and joy to me as much as R&B, funk, rock, etc., do. Hell disco mamas and daddies were bumping "You Brought the Sunshine" back in the day so you can still be a fan of gospel without listening to "Jesus' followers" but that's for another topic altogether.

Yup! Without this record, the Clark Sisters and the Winans family wouldn't have had success with the type of R&B records they do in the gospel world, that's for sure.

I love good Gospel music. More in the traditional vein and what I grew up on in the 70's and 80's. I don't dig the contemporary stuff at all. That lil Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary...I don't know whether to clap my hands or shake my ass. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

I agree with what a few said here, you don't have to be religious. To appreciate the beauty of gospel music.... there is just so much power in the vocals. Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Before I actually started taking part in music ministry, I kind of felt the way that you do. It was more about the power of the vocal for me. But over time anthrough lots of study, and really learning about the purpose of gospel music, I learned the real power comes from having the annointing, which is derived from the divine power of the Almighty ; that's what people who sing gospel actually believe even though it's not really a great selling point to the masses . It's not about how high you can hit the rafters or how fast you can skate across notes, gospel music is a direct communication experience between the singer and God, kind of like an intimate conversation if you will, the rest of us just happen to be listening in on it.
Anyhoo, here's a good dose of some some powerful vocals, I lurrrve this woman:

I've always loved the Say Amen Somebody documentary the music is just stunning and Thomas Dorsey... well there are simply no words for his contribution to Gospel music.
And there's nothing NOTHING like a mass choir... Music ministry for me [Edited 3/23/12 16:40pm]

Yes. I just need to believe that the singer believes. Not in a condescending way, but in a humble way that seeks to learn more about us. Oh, if I could have only fully embraced that as a kid.
