KISS legend Gene Simmons has branded music superstar Rihanna "fake", insisting modern pop stars rely on dancers and backing tracks when performing.

KISS and fellow rock heroes Motley Crue announced on Tuesday they will join up for a 40-date trek across North America from July 20 (including one lone Canadian gig at the Molson Amphitheatre in Toronto on Sept. 13), playing 90-minute sets each.

Simmons is looking forward to the gigs and took the opportunity to aim a swipe at younger acts, singling out Rihanna for criticism.

He says, "We're sick and tired of girls getting up there with dancers and karaoke tapes in back of them. No fake bulls**t. Leave that to the Rihanna, Shmianna and anyone who ends their name with an 'A'."

Motley Crue's drummer Tommy Lee agreed, telling Billboard, "No disrespect to Rihanna, she's a great singer, but we're in a slump for some s**t that has some personality and appeal beyond a bunch of pop stuff that's floating around out there.

"I'm glad he said that actually because I don't think I can bear watching another f**king award show that is just a little bit better than American Idol. It's f**king pathetic to watch people go out and f**ing karaoke with a bunch of lights and video. It's all completely watered down."
