I disagree with that.
While she has weak vocals, Janet had alot more depth to her music, artistic directions, great dancer with excellent showmanship to dumb her down as a black Brittany. I think Beyonce is more of a black "Brittany" than Janet. At least Janet had control over the artistic directions of her projects, participated in the songwriting and vision of her dances/music videos. She was VERY creative during her prime. Didnt steal ideas and took risks

I think musicjunky was joking, from the wink....I hope.
I don't think it's about dumbing down Janet, but Britney worked with Janet's choreographers, video directors, photoshoot people and everything in the beginning to market to little white girls. I remember how disgusted I was when people were falling for her and not being into Janet when she taught Brit. |

She has I wont deny that!
But when people make ridiculous comparisions like this I look at EVERYTHING not just one thing. You and me both know the ONLY reason why people say this is because of Janets vocals. If she had stronger vocals we would not be having this discussion. I think its unfair to soley base everything on JUST vocals alone especially when Janet has a pretty strong catalogue.
Brittany didnt write her songs, she didnt have control over the direction of her projects or concerts, choregraphy etc. Shes just like Rihanna. Janet isnt the best singer in the world but she has Control-Velvet Rope and thats very strong and she has participated in the creative process.
I think the media and as well as Brittany to an extent credits Madonna more because she is more popular. |

Whiter and popular, and this is coming from someone who loves Madonna. I never thought about voice when making comparisons, it came from the photoshoots and choreography. I thought Janet's voice was amazing in that time period you named and didn't compare it to Britney at all. |

I think Britney had a good run of hits but icon she is not. I actually think icon is used too loosely. What has she done/ changed in music that hasnt been done before her?? Not much when you really think about it. That goes for most artist though. I think titles are thrown around too lossely. Just because an artist had a few hits and some success doesnt make them an icon. |

Every year when Stephen Hill tweets who should get the lifetime achievement award he gets several tweets saying Janet jackson should, well last year it was out of Pattie, Janet and Aretha. Miss Franklin turned it down, Janet was on her Number Ones world tour 2011-2012 and had a show in paris the day of the awards, so it went to Patti. Stephen hill tweeted days b4 the BET awards last year how he tried everything in his power to get janet but she was on tour, and that he will tried again next year.
Jackson has every right to get this award this year she has changed the face of pop/ r&b music. She changed the face of MTV in the 1980's with ground breaking music videos and sold out world tours. I can not wait for her to get this award. The BET AWARDS knows how to put on a award show my favorite part of the entire show is when a legend gets this award.
I want all of you to tell me what artist should perform what janet songs. and what songs should janet perform when her tribute is done. Usually 4 to 6 perfomers perform, then the artist perform a 15 min set. Have fun with this you guys enjoy. #JanetJackson #BetAwards2012 (:
I could see Jill Scott or Marsha doing one of her famous "Baby Making Songs." Kind of hard imagining Ciara not doing something upbeat for Jan. I'm sure Kelly Rowland would love to be apart of something like this. What she would sing? Haven't the slightest....Maybe Usher or Chris Brown or Tonex for that matter, all of which have publically expressed their love and appreciation of her influence in their career. Tonex have actually submitted songs for her before but to no avail. He I think would be a pleasant surprise and a great choice performance wise to do something. Britney Spears is an obvious choice too considering Janet's obvious influence in her stage persona and dance. But she's been phoning it in for her own concerts so, she probably wouldn't be a good choice.
As I think about it, I would like to see a tribute that covers the gamut of her various styles. So. a funky uptempo joint, a social conscious record, a love ballad, a sexy slow jam, a fun, light-hearted song.
I don't know, we'll see. Hell, the girl haven't even accepted the honor yet
So which artists do you guys think would be good choices for a Janet tribute? With or without a BET LAA....And which songs you think they would do well performing? |

You could say that about Al Green, James Brown, Gladys Knight, and Earth Wind & Fire. He's a black entertainer and so are others like Chuck Berry. I've heard that James only got it because Michael Jackson turned it down and said James deserved it.
[Edited 3/21/12 10:35am]
Thats why I dont take BET seriously at all. They are all about opportunity... Michael knew what the deal was and was right. BET NEVER acknowledges the black artists they should.
Now dont get me wrong I LOVE Janet but their are PLENTY of more deserving artists that should get it BEFORE her Im sorry...
What about Tina Turner? Aretha Franklin? Or recent legendary artists that passed like Etta James, Teena Marie etc?
They always do things for RATINGS
And your naive to think they wouldn't.
Atleast Janet deserves the lifetime achievement award, it's not as if they want to give it to Beyonce.
Michael is/was just as deserving as James Brown, although, it was right that James Brown did indeed recieve it.
Also, apprently Aretha turned it down and it's always best when an artist can actually recieve in person and appreciate it. And as far as I'm concerned Janet is far more deserving than Etta James and Teena Marie in terms of her catalogue, alone.
