Janet is deserving if she ever receives it before or after other legends. I really could care less either way. BET really could care less about honoring the real black legends and icons. They are fixated on whats current and ratings. That is why legends like Tina and Aretha didnt want to put up with their bullshit. They do things like that soley for ratings.
The fact that BET only give the awards to who is willing to come.. shows just how irrelevant the award and the show is.
tell me.. how does janet jackson deserve to get a lifetime acheivement award before stevie wonder? her brothers don't have a bet lifetime acheivement award. Bet has always honored black icons, u just never witness the glory. tina turner and aretha frankiln turn down the honor at the time because they had personal issues going on to grace this show with their presence. |

Well Ive already expressed that I thought she shouldnt get it this year and that their are quite a few that should receive it before her.
Read the first couple of pages.
I just think whether BET gives it her this year or 10 years from now she technically deserves one. So using your example, while she doesnt deserve to receive one before Stevie Wonder if she does get it this year she technically deserves the award anyway
But I dont really care about BET and that award really doesnt matter or is relevant. BET had something going on YEARS AND YEARS ago before it turned into straight hood ghetto black exploitation television.
BET has not honored or payed any respect to the real legends over the last 15 years... and that BET lifetime achievement award doesnt count. They dont do things that pays respects to the real icons or make the youngins aware of them.

That argument is useless since you can counter it by saying it's all out of order. Whitney was the first honoree. Why did she get it before Diana Ross, who paved the way for Houston. Why would Chaka Khan be honored before Aretha Franklin (who was phoned years later)? |

Whitney clearly got it too early. I think everyone know that.
To me Janet is just the product of the music video era. She doesn't deserve shit. She didn't have the impact people like Prince, MJ, or Whitney did. |

Save MJ.. So Prince and Whitney arent products of the music video era either??? Im not saying that they arent talented but Prince didnt blow up/reach his status until after music videos became popular and Whitney didnt debut until after they were popular. While Janet may not be as popular as Whitney (Prince is arguable) and she may not have had as much of an impact either(which is arguable depending on how you look at it). That doesnt mean she doesnt deserve to be honered at the BET awards because of what time she came on the scene. Are there older legends that deserve to be honered before her.. YES!! but that doesnt take away the fact that she is still worthy of receiving the award. |

Prince and definitely Whitney didn't have those huge over-produced mini-movie videos that Janet did. I don't think Janet would have had the success she did had she come out before music videos were popular. I find her to be overrated. |

Yes Prince and Whitney did, they all did back then. NONE of them would be as popular without music videos. Are you forgetting that Prince didnt become popular/reach his status until after Purple Rain??? |

Your typical Janet hater. Never understood why people stayed on her case. As if all the other Pop artist didnt have "mini movie" music videos.

I'm most definitely not a Janet hater. I like several of her songs. I don't think she's this amazing artist everyone builds her up to be. |

They all have music videos but the difference is Prince and Whitney aren't and will not be remembered for that. Janet will. You really can't compare MJ to anyone. With him it's just an all of the above. The music, voice, performance, videos, etc. Everything. |

When Whitney passed nobody discussed her videos. The first thing that popped in the public's conscious was the VOICE.
People aren't running around imitating her moves from I Wanna Dance With Somebody.
When Janet leaves, it'll be a reverse. She won't be remembered as a powerhouse vocalist. You'll see folks doing the choreo from Rhythm Nation and the If and Miss You Much breakdowns. |

Now that I can somewhat agree with. I think Janet will be remembered for her music videos, dancing, and showmanship. Which is not a bad thing. Also I think sometimes people forget that MJ has been around wayyyy longer than his peers of the 80s. He has been a force to be recokned with since he was about 8 and his career '69-'78 is bigger and more profound than some of his peers. |

where have u been? bet has honored the majority of our black icons by playing their music clips, donnie simpson has interveiw all the musical icon on v soul. bet is not to blame for its program content, u should blame madison ave advertisers who refuse to spend money with black media, whether its black radio, black radio statios or black magazines. |

Yes.
And exactly, when people argue that there will never be another Michael Jackson they aren't lying. He's just in his own category all by himself. |

Yes I agree. Everyone is blessed with different talents. Whitney had little to no rhythmn and Janet doesnt have no where near the voice Whitney has. |

I cant speak on how BET was 30 years ago because I wasn't even born 30 years ago. The legacy of BET is slowly fading because of how it is currently.
VH1 Soul is NOT BET and I made a distinction between the BET over the last 15 years versus what it use to be. BET is currently trash and has been that way for a while now. It use to be good but its not anymore. |

Come again? Most of the dance/pop acts of today do nothing but emulate what she's already done--vocally, visually and choreography-wise. If anything, she doesn't get enough credit. There are other honors I'd like to see her get over this BET award, but it's not like she's totally underserving. "Get up off that grey line" |

BET was an entirely different network when I first saw it at three, four years old. The BET of today is unrecognizable and barely watchable. |

bet has quality programing. did any of u see maya angelou conversation with common? did any of u watch the bet honors? did any of u watch the black panthe animated show? no u did't .. stop listening to talking heads on tv and print media and check things out for yourself. i don't see other network giving blaclk icons any respect? bet has an excuse.. they don't get the big advertising dollar they need to provide top programming. what are the other networks excuse? |
