Mariah's skin is light and she didn't start out making "black" music
To me, the problem with this kind of thinking is that if you're black, you have to make soul, rap, or R&B music to be recognized. The ones who don't (Herbie Hancock, Charlie Pride, Johnny Mathis, Kathleen Battle, Tracy Chapman, Bobby Bland) are ignored. The Kennedy Honors don't just pick out a certain genre to recognize. What does someone being light or dark skin have to do with winning an award anyway?
Then dont venture over to that "only black people can make soul music" thread. The Most Important Thing In Life Is Sincerity....Once You Can Fake That, You Can Fake Anything. |

Well Aretha Franklin is called The Queen Of Soul, but the records that she got that title from had a white band (Muscle Shoals). You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton |

I wasn't saying that as my personal opinion, I said that because that's most likely the reason that Mariah has been ignored by BET. It is called BLACK Entertainment Television. Mariah hit the scene as the white version of Whitney back in 1990 and it worked for her. The difference between the two is that Whitney was black singing "white" music but Mariah was precieved as white. And Mariah never wanted to do pop in the first place. |

Janet should wait for this when she has something to promote like a new album.
Tina? Ummm a legend she is, but truly how influential is her solo work ( NOT COUNTING IKE AND TINA TURNER) to black audiences? It's like Lenny - should they get these accolades just because they are black when a majority of music appeals to a rock audience? (Waiting for a reply stating where the origins of rock music came from....)
But in my opinion Keith Sweat and Teddy Riley deserve a BET lifetime award more than someone who abandoned R&B years ago. |

Teddy I can see getting one. Keith? Hell naw.
Like I said, Tina Turner BEEN rock and roll (even though she is sometimes referred to as an R&B/soul vocalist) so of course they wouldn't give it to her. Don't expect them to. |

i so agree with this post... her solo work does not appeal to black audience none what so ever... and i love how u put lenny in the same cat as tina..so true...they are hard core rock artist...i think tina knows this and thats why she decline...it will be all good if she never gets honored by bet...she was honored by grammys a few years back...thats good enough |

I can see Teddy getting one eventually but here again, one could argue that there are so many other legends from the culture that deserves recognition before getting to Teddy. Keith Sweat? Na. Keith's been riding the wave of his debut record (mostly produced by Teddy Riley) for 24, 25 years now.
I wonder what their criteria is concerning older legends (Stevie) vs. the newer ones (Teddy). Being that it's an awards celebrating a lifetime worth of work, that tends lean more towards those who's either retired or well past their prime. |

Maybe so, but she has gotten number one hits on the r&b charts since she debuted. "Vision of Love," "Can't Let Go," "Emotions," "Love Takes Time," etc. all did well on the r&b charts. |

You could say that about Al Green, James Brown, Gladys Knight, and Earth Wind & Fire. He's a black entertainer and so are others like Chuck Berry. I've heard that James only got it because Michael Jackson turned it down and said James deserved it.

Thats why I dont take BET seriously at all. They are all about opportunity... Michael knew what the deal was and was right. BET NEVER acknowledges the black artists they should.
Now dont get me wrong I LOVE Janet but their are PLENTY of more deserving artists that should get it BEFORE her Im sorry...
What about Tina Turner? Aretha Franklin? Or recent legendary artists that passed like Etta James, Teena Marie etc?
They always do things for RATINGS
why do you feel those artists deserve it more than janet, because they are older and been around longer? janet is a icon of the video era which is when bet came around. can you seriously say that those artists have made a bigger impact in the bet-era then janet jackson? |

Aretha ain't gonna accept (so we can forget her)
Maybe P-Funk (or George Clinton; knowing Soul Train, if they do the Lifetime Achievement Award thing, they may just honor him like they did Ronald Isley and Charlie Wilson)?
BET is seemingly running out of options on who to give their award to.
I'm thinking Mary J. Blige may get it this year but don't quote me on that... |

Why not B.B. King? He started in the late 1940's and still performing and releasing records.
BB is a blues person and BET tends to avoid acknowledging Blues artists.
Well that's what BET blues is for. They need to get their own. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

He could still get it... I wouldn't actually put it past them. He got honored with some songwriting award at the Soul Train Awards in 2004 so anything's possible. |

That shouldn't be the case, considering all the living legends that's still around. I would think its hard to choose just one artist or group to honor every year.

I guess it could become more challenging if more and more artist decline the offer. But we only know of what two people rejecting it, Ms. Franklin and Ms. Turner right? My bad, forgot about Michael. [Edited 3/22/12 11:37am] |

Knowing Aretha and Tina, the award is not "prestigeous" enough.
If it was a Soul Train Award (before they sold out) they would have jumped all over it. |

Yeah I think Aretha and Tina would've easily accepted a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Soul Train Awards if they gave them the award in the '80s.
Plus BET sold out long time ago and is nothing but ratchet. Aretha and Tina probably don't wanna be around those idiots anyway. |

exactly i want to know exactly why they should get it b4 janet as well like WHY? janet changed the way videos were made and was the 1ST female artist to have backup dancers backing her up in videos...and she was an artist who can sing and dance at the same time...she paved the way for all the female artist who wanted to dance.....point blank period
