Who released what first: Different Strokes or Cold Sweat Syl Johnson - Different Strokes
James Brown - Cold Sweat
---- Now I know that James Brown is (one of) the undisputed innovators of funk and all but I know there were others who also innovated that style. Both of these songs were released in 1967 though "Cold Sweat" was a way bigger hit initially than "Different Strokes" but somehow both songs got heavily sampled (especially "Different Strokes", which everyone assumed then was a James Brown song and it wasn't).
So I ask: which song was released first? | |

Not sure which was released first, but IMO Cold Sweat is straight funk, whereas Different Strokes is funky soul, not quite all the way to funk yet...
Great track though! Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss... | |

I consider both CS and DS funky soul or at least the beginnings of funk. Cold Sweat definitely had more of what was to come than Different Strokes though. Good point. | |

Yeah, Cold Sweat is a sparser, more syncopated sounding arrangment, which was foretelling of the golden funk era right around the corner in the gutter. Music, sweet music, I wish I could caress and...kiss, kiss... | |

Strokes sounds like some hard Stax soul records. It's like it's almost funk but not quit. Sound like Tramp.

Also, similar to this but a few meters faster.
But this may be it right here.
