a "new" Bowie fan

im REALLY wanting to get into david bowie, i dont just mean the music.. i mean the music, the performer, the artist as a whole.. i want to know about him, and his work, and the new things he brought to the table.

could some of you hard core bowie fans tell me how to discover bowie fully..

i know it sounds like something you should just kind of know how to do.. but idk,

when i got into prince i saw purple rain, got Controversy,PR,ATWIAD,and Parade albums, and joined this forum, and it just kind of evolved and now im a HUGE prince fan.. i want to do the same with bowie,

help?

honestly, the best way to get into Bowie is to start at one album and move forward. or go pick up a couple that you think you'd like based on their descriptions.

with Bowie, it depends on where you're starting from. like who your other favorite artists are or genre of music.

Space Oddity and The Man Who Sold The World are a bit difficult to slog through at times, even for a hardcore fan, so maybe start at Hunky Dory or Ziggy if you're going to try to follow the evolution.

My Bowie collection is not large by any means but IMO if you want the popular stuff, get Heroes, Hunky Dory, Let's Dance and Aladdin Sane.

Here are some Bowie albums to try (besides Ziggy):

Scary Monsters

Lodger

Young Americans

Let's Dance (yeah, I know it's a "pop" album, but it's a good pop album!)

If you want to try some of the later 90s/2000s albums:

Earthling

Outside

Reality

^^ these are good suggestions.

while you're listening to his music, if you really want to get into him watch the Ziggy Stardust "movie", Love you till Tuesday, and pick up the Best of Bowie DVD has a lot of great videos and a few live performances from him.

Change it one more time..

Changesbowie is a good introduction that pretty much covers everything you need to know on 1 disc.

Watch these 2 films
- Ziggy Stardust
- Cracked Actor

Start with the quintessential albums first
Ziggy Stardust 1972
Diamond Dogs 1974
Aladdin Sane 1973
Scary Monsters 1979
Let's Dance 1982
Hunky Dory 1971
Earthling 1997

Then go for the more weirder but still excellent albums
Low 1977
Heroes 1977
Station to Station 1976
Young Americans 1975
Outside 1996

Also worth hearing after are these
Hours 1999
Heathen 2001
Reality 2003

A few years ago I went back and bought all of the Bowie, Springsteen and Marley albums, not all at once but over time.

Having said that, the only Bowie albums I didn't get were Let's Dance, Tonight, Never Let Me Down and Black Tie White Noise.

I remember I was head over heels for Earthling and Heathen at the time of release but it took me a while to get into Reality.
