is Gaga done (at least stateside)?

I can't say I've ever seen it rise so fast - and so big - lets be real, bigger than Britney, Beyonce, J.Lo, Kelly, Adele (at least in terms of fame and press if not numbers), Xtina...I won't say she was ever quite Mariah, Whitney, Madonna or Janet because their type of fame and sales were from a different time for labels and the economy; but before you knew it Poker Face/Just Dance/Papparazzi/Bad Romance/Born This Way/Edge of Glory were just taking over the planet as the new pop classics in a way my first list of girls never made or did.

Now...2012...it just feels like the BTW album skyrocketed from hype and tried so hard with single after single to be another blockbuster, but creatively (and perhaps commercially?) it has fully dropped off...this soon, and why?

I was just starting to really like the bitch...

Well I've said this...when your living in the moment it's hard for a lot of people to understand the past & future... Nobody is alpha forever. Nobody. Young people that didn't view Madonna's career as a whole and try to do this "VS" between the two simply don't get it. You're talking about someone with a 30 year career and a new-girl on the block. Is she done? No, but there's an inevitable time when one must take a backseat. I remember back in 2002 when Britney announched she was taking a 6 month break and my father trying to explain to me that she wasn't always going to be the star she is. I laughed it off, and in my 13 year old mind I thought he was crazy. Britney Spears was Britney Spears. Everything was so peachy. Madonna? Pff...Who the hell was Madonna compared to her?

Now it's Adele. But her third-release, whenever she decides to release it will never repeat the success of 21.

The world doesn't stand still. There's always someone else, someone newers, someone prettier, etc. It's the way it is.

do we really blame Adele though? It's almost like saying back in the day Alanis put Sheryl Crow out of business back in the day; it's not really a fair comparison because the music itself is so different. But I know what you mean

Madonna is on par with The Beatles, Elvis, MJ, Sinatra, Streisand -- maybe not technically talented-wise; but she's just a phenom that has lasted on a whole different level. It feels like for all the talk of the little "monsters" their obsessive love has become more Greatful Dead or Tori Amos than Bruce Springsteen...

Far as Britney (and Madonna), they were both never seen as having artistic 'cred' in the same way Gaga was revered by critics and Grammys and blogs from the beginning of her popularity. I think it's a totally different case where the Artist bought her own hype and believed her own bullshit a little too quickly whereas B & M were always treated as 2nd class citizens by the rock n roll press...I think had Gaga not run her mouth so much about making the 'album of the decade' and what not, and had Rolling Stone and all the critics not put her up on such a pedestal so quickly, maybe she would have had a chance at becoming more of a long term star. Maybe I'm wrong...

I must say certain album cuts like "So Happy I could die" "Bloody Mary" "Heavy Metal Lover" and "Monster" are fucking killer and will always probably get spun on my Bose...

Over-saturation. Plain and simple. Then throw in the "preachyness" of BTW, no matter how positive the message and effort, turned the tweens away. Teens don't like to be preached to.

Everyone that takes over, loses that take over, people have what they call a "honeymoon Period" a time when whatever they release, just shoots up the charts, u name the person that has had longevity, and they have had that "period. Examples...Prince from 1999 album till Around the World, Elton John basically from 1972 to 1977, and so many others but, being Done, would mean never recording again, and i doubt thats what she is going to do

I think her business was BRILLIANT in about 2010-early 2011. Telling the gay (teen) pop fanbase they were "Born This Way," based on the template of "Express Yourself," ... I can't say I buy her rhetoric but for a minute it felt like the most intelligently constructed pop empire ever...what a difference a year can make in today's climate tho

I've always felt Gaga would end up in the vain of Cyndi Lauper. A pop icon who'll be remembered for a hit album and a few hit singles annd have tremendous reverence in the gay community. That's what I said back in 2010 when she was at her peak.

I knew the "rivaling Madonna" talk was just that. Talk. It was never going to happen. Ciccone's career simply can't be repeated.

I think most are right, GaGa was like.... EVERYWHERE in 09/10. I mean i heard her songs every 10 minutes on radio, everytime she said something it was front on yahoo news. Every youtube video & new popstar would be compared to GaGa it was GaGa mania.

And the hype surrounding BTW was unlike any i had seen in awhile, then Adele came and took GaGa's crown & meat dress lol

But either way, she will still be loved in the gay community and probably have a few more hit singles.

I think Kesha is thankfully about done soon though here's hoping:pray:

Each artist after a very successful album/era has career decline. Adele will never be as successful as with "21", Gaga will never be as successful as with the album "Fame". This type of albums happen only once in career.
Prince never came even close to success "Purple Rain", let's be honest.
Even MJ after "Thriller" has never repeated this success. Although the "Dangerous" and "Bad" are 30+ million sales and have big hits, they are far from the success of "Thriller".

Gaga was already in full swing, she will never be as big anymore, but she has two ways: to create a new and interesting music and to be one of the most successful, or fall into oblivion.

well if she can tour they will pay, as far as sales, its a worldwide thing, if she can maintain sales overseas, like many others still do, then interest in her will continue. The USA is more fickle, more in and out trendy than its ever been before. Though times have changed i think because of her sales and opportunity for it, a label would hold her regardless. True that labels dont nurture anymore but that is more at your start, labels arent going to wait for you to catch on longer than an album, sometimes one single. So people like Prince would have never existed now.

Erm, wut?

The promo cycle for BTW is over. I think she's about to do a tour, Born This Way Ball. People/naysayers/insecure mofos will wax poetic about how she's too preachy or her audience this or that. The answer is no, that is not true. BTW is easily her biggest hit ever, so there goes that whole "preachiness turns the tweens away" thing.

She doesn't have a new album out right now. She will soon. Thankfully, she isn't like Rihanna or Beyonce and that there is a little space for you to breathe. Remember when people begged for her to take a break? Well...

I think staying off the road for the main cycle of the album promo was at once a mistake and the right move. there was no way to win since she had kept herself on tour (or, her agents did) from 08-11. Imagine the hype and freshness if she had waited to just do 3 month arena tours one at a time once she was a major major star...

and yes BTW was a huge hit...im asking the question, not saying she is for sure over. it just seems like all the hype about her being the next Madge, Bowie, whatever, has turned out to be empty

BTW has sold 2.2 million copies in the US and was the third highest-selling album of last year. The promotional cycle for the album is now complete, so we haven't been seeing much of her lately (also, she is preparing for a mammoth tour).

The album spun off five singles, all of which when Top 20 at Pop radio (three Top 10) and Top 30 on the Hot 100 (four Top 10).

No, it didn't have the impact of The Fame, but then it was never going to. That doesn't mean she is "over".

she's not done, but she should release another single, she WAS everywhere during 2011, folks, and now you're telling me that she's done because she has kinda stopped promoting the album/tour during 2012's winter? BULLSHIT

I bet she'll be back in early 2013, with a different/more relaxed look/sound...and a couple of good singles

She could very well be the next Madonna or Bowie, but she's going to need more than two albums to do it. She's certainly the most interesting pop star that's come along in quite some time.

this whole thread makes no sense... Bowie??? yeah right, back to the 70s, when stars kept releasing new albums every 10 months...

Madonna? wow, since Erotica she has been off & on the business... Does anyone remember the long, cold, silent 1995? or 1997? or 2006? or 2010-11?

I'm not a huge fan and I've been to her concert which was good for her generation though certainly to Blonde Ambition. Having that said, I love the singles from her first two albums and several album cuts and Marry the Night from the current album. I think going around saying she's creating the best record of the decade jinxed her, I don't think anyone goes around saying that even if they think it.

Dance music is still hot, and so is Adele's style and she is capable of doing both when pushing herself, so I'm interested in seeing how it goes with her next album. But didn't she say she's going on a 400 date tour or something?

it will all depend on output, and what she does when the sales slip, every artist reacts different, the important thing is release and record, im tired of breaks that aritst take, especially when they havent done anything. yes times have changed but artists recorded released toured, many times over. Tired of the argument for artists, especially when artists cancel more shows than ever and the tours are way smaller than they used to be. That being said, she needs a catalog to judge her as an artist 2 albums and two tours are nothing in a catalog, thats a start, long way to go.

I'm pretty sure Madonna was written off as just a pop tart at this point in her career (Like a Virgin stage, if we're keeping track).

that's what the haters said at that time "I'give her 3 years", lol

but the difference is that Madonna NEVER stopped from 1983 to 1995; after the LAV single, she released more hit singles in 1985, the hit film Seeking Susan, the LiveAid performance and then 1986 with Shangai Surprise and the True Blue album

she never stopped...which drove the haters mad, lol

She's not done, but to those who think her popularity hasn't declined is foolish. She could show up naked at the next big award show and it wouldn't get as much pub as it would have in 08/09. I think a lot of her career is based on shock factor (videos/outfits etc). For me, I see her now and just don't care that she's there. I do like EOG and I gave BTW a try and didn't like it. Of course, BTW is her biggest hit, she was coming off a HUGE era(s) and it had tons of hype behind it. Everywhere she went she talked about it like it was going to be epic. Adele and Lady Gaga aren't the same type of artist but I think there's no doubt she's has overshadowed her, overall. Her fans know it too, this is why they took a whole week when the MTV Video Award nominations came out to bash Adele and mad that she racked up 6 Grammy's while Gaga got NONE. lol
