First of all SORRY to tell the Dream but soul isnt a black or white thing, ask Annie Lennox or Daryl Hall about singing soul. Im tired of cats like this where their racist segregated minds, because sorry to say, The Dream's comments of black and white are fucking ignorant, and what i would expect to hear a white person in the south say years ago (or still). Like Bruce Springsteen said in his speech, JUST DO IT. Plain and simple, change the MF'ing game yourself, stop tweeting about your album sales and change the fucking culture yourself. DONT bitch about how everyones the same and then go do a video with typical sexy girl and bling and shit. If the idea of change stems from sales than the DREAM is in the wrong space and never will get out of that web, because if you shoot for sales odds are you arent being true to yourself, ADELE was a fluke, it happend, i mean artists like Joss Stone arent selling records like Beyonce 4 did, the Dream is misguided by one record and living in his own ignorant world, he needs to stop tweeting change and make it himself

Noted producer and recording artist The Dream has never been one to shy away from being bluntly honest but, was his statement that black singers can't sing "soul anymore" accurate?

Speaking with The Guardian over the weekend, The Dream questioned the admiration Adele ("21") receives for singing soul versus Beyonce ("4").

"It's called rhythm and blues; they just took the blues out of it for so long. What's crazy is that blacks can't do soul records any more. We love Adele singing it, but Beyoncé singing it? No,"
says The Dream.

So what works for "blacks"? According to The Dream, a club hit.

"No, the tempo's too slow, gimme the club hit. Now the blacks in America are responsible for the pop records, and everybody else is singing soulful records," says The Dream. "It's weird to me. We're pigeonholed over there."

So is that really where music stands, at least in the U.S.?

In related news, The Dream is logging studio time with Rita Ora, Bridget Kelly and X Factor's Tulisa Contostavlos following songs like "1+1, Beyonce" and "Roc, Love IV"

http://www.singersroom.com/news/8163/The-Dream-Blacks-Cant-Do-Soul-Records-Anymore#ixzz1pasvr4oT

He has no soul so he needs to include himself. I like RnB music with real singing and if white artist are going to do it then so be it. Maybe one day black artist will stop spending so much time trying to cross over and just try to put some soul into.

Very ignorant statement. Somebody doesn't know the difference between pop ballads and "soul" music.

Adele's 21 isn't a soul album, neither is 4.

I'm tired of people giving credit where it's not due. Yes, we're all proud of Adele for bringing back "real" music rolleyes but she hasn't done anything different. She jocked Etta James singing style and sings songs that are borderline suicide letters. What I will credit her doing is making the ballad mainstream again. "Someone Like You" is the first ballad to be number one in how many years?

But let's be honest, she doesn't really have "soul" in her voice. She's soulful for a white girl (yeah I said it) I guess, but Beyonce has more soul than Adele. It's just that Beyonce doesn't make listenable music. evillol

And if you want to hear real soul music (not neo-soul), look up someone like Sam Cooke or Aretha Franklin.

Soul music was killed (or should I say replaced) by funk music beginning in the 70s.

"I guess, but Beyonce has more soul than Adele." You lost all credibily with that comment.

And Soul Music died when disco came along not Funk as you had plenty of soulful singers doing fuck music.

Do not hate on Adele or any of the blue eyed soul artist if black artist cannot cut the mustard as soul singers anymore.

I'm noting hating on Adele, I actually enjoy her. I guess my statements got everybody's panties in a bunch. But I'm too sexy to give a fuck so carry on.

Well he does have a point. And he's part of the problem himself.

It's interesting how white women from Europe (Winehouse, Duffy, Adele) know more about black tradition than a lot of these wack artists. Because they've studied and have an appreciation and respect.

Exactly. Also they actually have good voices whereas most of the promoted(shoved in our face0 artists in the States are mediocre at best.

When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I said this in another Adele thread. The UK has a long history of loving and adopting soul. This has been going on for almost half a century. N yes white peple can sing soul.

the dude needs to get out some LP's and listen to some old shit.

Nah baby, its Sister Rosetta Tharpe.

not to threadjack (too late!), i went to the stax museum in memphis a couple of years ago and she was in the little documentary they show you before you tour the exhibits. i had never heard of sister rosetta before, and i sat there with my mouth open, totally blown away!

I went there a year ago too! Friggin awesome! Bought me a booker t/mg's dvd and a big red mug. I tried to make love to the consoles on display, but they wouldn't let me. Shitloads of reels and records...my soul felt bearhugged! Then we went to graceland...BBLLEEEHHHH!

My, my, my.....sounds like the truth has been spoken, especially about the slow tempo part, but folks don't like it. All I ever hear from folks around here is...."There's still good music these days but you have to search for it" barf..... Well, I've had folks recommend new stuff to me and the only music that has been actual "jams" has been from white guys from Europe. Everything that's been recommended to me that has come from black artists has been as slow and dull as a fucking Lawrence Welk record.

It's like living in the damn Twilight Zone where folks have switched roles these days. I mean, white Europeans throwing down hard while black Americans make slow dorky ass shit that ain't even as hip as Slim Whitman. It the fucking opposite of how it used to be. You wanna prove him wrong, then put some rhythm in your ass, speed up the tempo, get rid of the shit hop drum machines that barely tap, and put some hard pounding drums and funky bass back in the music and get back on the right track.

Andy is a four letter word.

Oh Andy, how do you survive when you hate most of the new music? lol I agree that the radio is unlistenable because they play the same 5 songs every hour. But I'm a fan of hip hop and I like some of today's music, but I agree that's it's not as good as it used to be.

On general and vague principal I seem to love to hate that guy too. But I saw a recent picture of him, and at least he had that damn ice-cream-cone tatoo laser removed from is face.

I really interpretted his statement as somewhat reflective and accurate. I read him to say not that Beyonce couldn't sing soulful music, but that her more soulful stuff would not sell in the same manner as Adele's - "We love Adele singing it, but Beyoncé singing it? No." I really think he is talking about the marketplace rather than an inherent capacity to sing with soul. And frankly, I really like Adele as a person and a songwriter, but I find her voice and delivery to lacking.

(Just kidding - I know it was that other dude with the icc face tat.)
