Hmmm
I understand where you coming from with that question and I've once felt that way, but to me music is never obsolete even when the artists that make it ceased to put their hearts into it.
For example, I've accepted the fact that Mariah & Mary J(who once used to be two of my fave female singers) WON'T record the same matrue material that they were once associated with. It became easier for me to block their supbar latest stuff, and I shifted my attention to the material that complemented their talents. This music will last, even when they no longer on this earth. Thats what I meant by music not going obsolete.

I think he was tired of the business long before he decided to retire. And y'know what? Good for him, he deserves his retirement, he earned it. I doubt he's coming back.

Maxwell is expected to release "Summers'" this year. I doubt Justin Timberlake and Annie Lennox are done. Also Chrissie Hynde and The Pretenders are still active.

Tina Turner has already done 50 years in the game... can't see her coming back. But if she does, she can still rock it...

We're all going to be done one day, hopefully move on to another life I thought the music would go on forever when I was younger I guess it's picked up by the next generation They'll have their own superstars and unsung heroes Then all that music will end up in some rummage bin in a seedy pawn shop It's only a paper moon as they say, lol "So fierce U look 2night, the brightest star pales 2 Ur sex..."

I'm a really big janet fan and am listening to her as we speak. I hope I'm wrong, but I really feel like she's finished. It's not that I don't think she has it in her cause I'm sure still does, but she's not getting the credit she deserves like other big divas and only gets hits on the dance charts now and is not talked about often now other than for her body and tours. It's not about hit albums and singles these days unfortunately.
I hope Justin Timberlake is done and joins the SNL cast. He's better off being a douche there instead of in music and acting. He's a terrible dancer and is nothing without Timbaland.

in 2012, pretty much everyone I care about is "done". I'm not sad about it. Just the way it is.
I have a hard time getting into new acts because there's no label support there. DIY would-be major artists are like Prince doing his own album covers. You can appreciate that it's done on the cheap...but it's not like the real thing. Turns out that shit actually does need money behind it.

Please, never say that again! I'm afraid it will give people ideas.

I'm beginning to feel the same way. Though I'm buying Madonna's new one and really like some cuts, I really don't feel excited about it like before and though I have tickets to her show, I feel chill about it and not hyped up like before. I don't care if Prince never releases music again, and in a way, same with Janet.

I actually found him the funniest on SNL during all the time he went. He should really give up music for that, the Adam Sandler route. Didn't he fail at music too?

With the music he did during his prime, I don't care if he never makes another album again.

Madonna is the soundtrack to my life. I don't know about calling myself a diehard though I've always loved her and buy all her albums, so it's just tradition. I like the album, I think I have to let it grow on me more, and the excitement level I would get with albums of my favourite artists in general has really gone down since 2009-ish. Though I still love music and get excited, I have gotten lazy with the whole thing and don't feel like being emotionally involved anymore since that has gotten me in trouble before. Donna Summer: Her fans are still waiting for the supposed two new album releases. I won't say she's done. Just that she's on her own time schedule. She's never a bore to me. Her ageless and timeless songs are played by me as if she were some new artist on the music scene in my world:) Come on with it, Donna. You can still sing, so sing:) Unfortunately, she may be done and just hasn't shared the news:( [Edited 3/24/12 12:10pm]

I still have hope for Mimi, though. If she is still recording 10 years from now, I can't see her doing the same teeny-bopper music she's been recording for the past 6 years. After all, she'll be 50 in 10 years and there is nothing sadder than watching a 50 year old singer trying to be trendy with their music. If "Merry Christmas II You" is any indication, there is still an adult singer somewhere inside of her.
I'm also interested in what direction Janet will be taking with her next album. She's a middle-aged woman now. People are going to expect more from her than her usual whispering, moaning and heavy-breathing over dance beats. [Edited 3/24/12 12:46pm] "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! Yeah, I know. And that's the reason why I have not been remotely interested in a Madonna record since 1994. "It's not nice to fuck with K.B.! All you haters will see!" - Kitbradley

Roisin Murphy David Bowie Duran Duran (I know they are still around, but I bet they will NEVER have another top20hit, a platinum album or a real world tour...sadly...) Anthrax Maxwell D'Angelo Suede Billy Corgan

Maxwell and D'Angelo have albums due this year.
Duran Duran will continue to put out music, so in that case I don't think they're done. Fuck the pop charts and Top 40 radio. I don't give a shit about that anyway.

D'Angelo has had an album due out every year since 2000.
