Alanis Morissette- Ironic
This chick ruled int he 90's and really left an impression.... she did seem like a general crazy bitch which i loved about her Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Jagged Little Pill is the first CD I ever got. It never gets old too! 2012: The Queen Returns

I was listening to this the other day .... this reminds me ...
There was alot of "flack" given to Alanis about this song - isn't it ... that alot of what she describes in the song is NOT ironic .... its just bad luck ?
I forget the criticism that was talked about - and quite frankly - my grammer sucks ! lol Colonel Angus may be smelly. colonel angus may be a little rough . but deep down ... Colonel angus is very sweet.

The sound of her voice has always irked the hell out of me. It sounds like a pissy Depends diaper.
I've seen video footage of her in the 1980s and she was a very pretty girl. I don't know what happened to her in the 1990s though. She looked like something homeless. Andy is a four letter word.

Yes, none of the scenarios Alanis sings about are ironic at all. The word is often misused though.
I thought all the songs I heard from her debut album were awful--like scratching nails on a blackboard. The only song she ever did that I liked was her cover of Fergie's "My Humps".

The irony of the song is the lack of proper usage of the word Ironic, thus it is still ironic 2012: The Queen Returns

Alanis was not that clever yet, back then.

the irony was simply lost on her 2012: The Queen Returns

Didn't "Pill" become like the 3rd biggest 90's album? Love her anyway. Her voice and style was so different than anything else.

I hated her when she was everywhere, but bought the album for old times sake in the 00's when they started to REALLY suck.

I thought that album was full of really well written pop songs that were best on the first or second listen My Legacy

Of course they were well written, thank Glen Ballard for that! He was also responsible for some of MJ's work like Man In The Mirror

And Wilson Phillips. That is the key problem and key strength with Alanis' music though.
She was presented as an edgy alternative artist, but at her heart she was a pop singer with a pop producer/songwriter behind her. My Legacy

Was there really a problem? Look how well it sold! And it's not like anything on the album was typical pop. 2012: The Queen Returns

not for her, no, but for me yes. The music sounded great at first, but had no lasting power. It was just a new type of pop. Post grunge pop. It was fine, just not great, IMO My Legacy

LOL! Yeah, but I still like the song and the album, her best... just revisited it recently when it was brought to my attention that she released an acoustic version of the album a couple of years ago.
Still can't get over that fact though that "Jagged little pill" beat out "HIStory" as album of the year at the '96 Grammies. All because those fuckers tried to be more modern.

But..... it was like a 1,000 percent better album imo.
I Know MJ Fans think he deserves to win every year but eh.... people are still made Joshua Tree won over Bad.... i mean come on now Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

Bad is my favourite album, but the singles from Joshua Tree are pretty good too and a completely different style from MJ, so I try not to think about it. Plus the 86-88 period had soooo many great artists and acts, MJ was a part of the handful, and a lot of fans forget that cause they were young or not around, so even if Madonna or George Michael beat him, it wouldn't bother me that much. Plus he got nods elsewhere during the Bad era and did eventually get one Grammy for Leave Me Alone, which I think was the most creative video of that era, and Bruce Swedien won for the album engineering.
Anyways, I think Jagged Little Pill has kind of aged well and was like a female take on the messages from a male dominated grunge scene, blending soft rock and grunge: alternative. Hole may have made it easier for Alanis to breakthrough. Remember, she was a Canadian pop star before Jagged Little Pill doing Janet and Paula like music with really big hair (remember Too Hot?) and was slowly covering dark themes, but didn't really have a musical identity yet cause her voice was too loud for that kind of music. I think singles on the next two albums after Pill were also really good as well as the City of Angels cut.

No, it's not! Not at all! Just listen to the album and you will see that HIStory is a great album after all! It's not a happy carefree album, but Pill isn't either. Both albums are great, but Pill is not better than HIStory.

I remember that many who liked HIStory also loved Pill at the time, but I didn't recognize the Ballard connection at the time. Maybe Pill was the female HIStory, or HIStory the male Pill it's funny too though that Alanis won cause from what I remember, HIStory was at #1 longer here than Pill in 95' and it wasn't till 96' Pill went to #1, but for many months, probably half the year, instead of almost 2.

Comparing HIStory to Jagged little Pill? 2012: The Queen Returns

Only cause they were big at the same time. If not in your part of the world, then where I'm at.

OK then, fair game. Let's compare these two: vs 2012: The Queen Returns

they were mainly co-inkydinks aka coincidences "Climb in my fur."

Adele's been monstrously huge this year. Wayne's album's done very poorly.

I remember that criticism The things that she describes in the song aren't really "ironies".

the album's quality, every song sounded like a potential single when I first listened. [Edited 5/27/12 15:03pm]

I was superficial and would laugh at her messy long hair without looking at the fact I had that too then and was fucking miserable!
