Aretha Franklin-Spirit In The Dark(The Album) Depending on the mood that I'm having these days(which is just melancholy) this record is on my 45 like crazy.
I wanna know what do ya'll think of this album?? I think that Ree's hardcore fans are madly in love with this LP 4 the simple fact that its 100% bluse,,,period. N E way,,lets discuss.

This must B Aretha Franklins deepest & most soulful
album. At least that´s how I feel when I listen 2 it. I read somewhere that this was a very unhappy, turbulent & unstable period in her life & that she really opened up on this 1.Like a therapy album. She plays almost all the pianoparts herself here,& it´s raw, bluesy & got a powerful glow. I mean, the piano intro 2 The thrill is gone. It´s like Ray Charles or maybe Thelonius Monk. There R so many beautiful moments on this album. so beautiful it hurts. Her vocals on Don´t play that song. She sounds so free. You and me gives me the chills. like wise with One way ticket. An absolute masterpiece. Aretha Franklin may B a diva but she has the guts 2 let go of her most inner feelings.Especially on this album. She gives her everything & that´s why she´s the queen of soul. /peace manki

What was going on with Aretha's life at that period?? I think I read somewhere that she used to be linked with a man who used to beat her up. Is that true??

When she startded recording "Spirit in the dark"in 1969,according 2 an interview I read with producer Jerry Wexler,Aretha was a wreck. She had finally separated from Ted White who she´d married in the early 60´s. He became her manager & over the years regulary abused her more & more, even in public.Aretha was once found beaten up unconcious in a car at a parking lot. It was when she luckily managed 2 leave him she recorded this album. According 2 Wexler Aretha had during this marriage suffered an extremely low self asteem & depression. This album was her therapy 2 built up herself. "Don´t play that song" is her message 2 Ted White. Just listen 2 how free she sounds.Like she´s ready 2 get on with her life. "One way ticket" is also like her goodbye 2 him >>I loved you kindly Loved you so blindly It was just a one way ticket to love<< /peace manki
