can we talk T.REX/Marc Bolan? especially these album...

one of my favorite discoveries of 2011!

I remember going WIILD when I hear this tune come on

during one of the scenes in the film Frankie & Alice:

I love the rockabilly feel which is more present

on this album than Electric Warrior

another one of my favorite discoveries of 2011!

everything I've read about this album always

notes that it came some years before David Bowie's

Young Americans which incorporated more soulful

background arrangements/singers..

this track may have influenced Britney Spears

favorite lyric "bay-buh bay-buh" lol

love this one!!!

last year when I studied T. Rex's albums I stopped at TANX

but just yesterday I happened upon his discography & noticed

there was MUCH MORE to sink my teeth into like these:

so I heard the background singers & did further research

to find out Gloria Jones was on background, and once his girlfriend as well

which led me to this clip:

NEVER FUCKING KNEW TAINTED LOVE WAS A REMAKE!!!

how many more of you dig Tyrannosaurus Rex? love

"be who you are and say what you feel
because those who mind don't matter
and those who matter don't mind."

T. Rex, Electric Warrior, The Slider and Tanx were some of the best albums in the '70s for real...

I still gotta dig into pre-glam rock T. Rex when they really went by Tyrannosaurus Rex. I heard a few of their 1968-69 recordings, Bolan was on some OTHER SHIT then. lol

I don't know why Marc thought that was gonna work. lol He and David Bowie actually went through this weird period trying to be something they weren't...

Me either. It seemed they didn't "find their sound" until Iggy Pop, Led Zeppelin and the like started making their mark. hmmm David wasn't Iggy and Marc wasn't Robert (hell his voice left a lot to be desired compared to Robert lol) but somehow afterwards, they began to figure out how to make a mark...

I love Marc/T. Rex but he was kind of a one trick pony. He did do that one trick very well but after Tanx his albums started becoming a bit repetitive and boring. From T. Rex-Tanx he was really on fire and even though I don't love the later albums there were still some good-great singles. There's a great double disc set that collects his post Electric Warrior singles that is a terrific listen.

To the original poster, you didn't mention Electric Warrior. If you do not have that album it should definitely be your next T. Rex purchase.

thanx.. I did make slight mention to it

I didn't post any songs from there because

the only one I really play is "Mambo Sun"

I mainly focused on the 2 albums that

I play the most tracks from

(Tanx & The Slider)

I do own & appreciate Electric Warrior tho cool

I'm a HUGE Bolan fan so it's quite hard for me to critizice him, but I have to say that in a way it's true that he was a one trick pony. After the success of the singles Hot Love and Get It On he used the same formula for his singles for many years with worse and worse results (except for Children Of The Revolution and 20th Century Boy).

When it comes to his albums, in my opinion, he always came up with something new. I'm not sure which T. Rex album is my favourite, but I believe that the ones that I've listened to the most are Tanx and Beard Of Stars. I wish Bolan had gone further with the idea behind Tanx and created a full on soul album for T.Rex as he did for Sister Pat Hall.

In 1977 Bolan finally stopped rewriting his old hit singles and came up with Dandy In The Underworld:

Here's one of my Bolan favourites, City Port. A soulful rock duet with Gloria Jones hidden as the B-side to their super cheesy cover of To Know Him Is To Love Him.

That's not necessarily a bad thing if he was really good at that one trick. For example, Chuck Berry, AC/DC and the Ramones didn't have much variety in their music but the one thing they did they were really, really good at.

Marc was the TRUE glam rocker; Ferry, Eno and Bowie used glam as a platform, but as soon as they became stars, they tried something else (funk, soul, pop, electro, etc)

that said, I'm not mad about the T.REX albums, I just love the singles, but many of the album tracks left me cold...

Electric Warrior is the best album, hands down

That's true. I just feel that Bolan restricted his creativity for many years just because he was obsessed to make hit songs. For example the Slider album was originally supposed to be a stripped down blues album and the Tanx was supposed to be all about funk and soul. Fortunately there are hundreds of unreleased songs from 1971-77 that showcase his versatility.

The first four albums (Ramones, Leave Home, Rocket to Russia and Road to Ruin) are pretty great, after that the songs slowly started being less distinctive. I do think there is something appealing about a band knowing their strengths and sticking to them. I think it was Johnny Ramone that said he was worried about the band evolving because when his favourite bands evolved their music turned to shit. lol

being experimental

I was looking for more

Erotic City & 17 Days-esque stuff lol

Raspberry Beret was pretty DOPE tho! biggrin

I'm grooving to this one right now. I like to play it at open mic nights, but it's REAL HARD for a 53-year-old guy to pull this off vocally!

Your welcome! smile

It's nice to actually contribute something here on the Org. For years I've been mainly just quietly reading and educating myself on soul, R&B and funk. Those genres are not that popular here in Finland.

I can't resist posting a couple more of my T.Rex favourites.

Bolan recorded several versions of this song in 1971 and even performed it live on radio, but for some reason it was never officially released.

This is a mess of a song, but it's just so full of raw bolanic energy that I can't resist it. Also this sounds a bit like a Prince & the NPG live with Gloria and Sister Pat Hall screaming like Shelby J and Prince mimicking Jimi Hendrix lol

I just did some research and was quite surprised to find out that the album was never finished. Seems like Bolan abandoned the project (like many others) for some reason. A collection of the session was released in 1996 though, with the title Marc Bolan Presents: Sister Pat Hall.

http://www.discogs.com/Sister-Pat-Hall-Marc-Bolan-Presents-Sister-Pat-Hall/release/2224687

Last year a great bootleg collection of Bolan's soul music endeauvours called Pure Magic was released on the "official" Marc Bolan facebook account for free. You should check it out. Here's a description of Pure Magic:

" This CD brings together a selection of Marc Bolan and Bolan related recordings with a soul flavour. Four different groups of recordings are represented on the disc: T.Rex, Gloria Jones, Pat Hall, and Richard Jones. Each track features Marc in some capacity; either he's singing and/or playing guitar, producing or has a songwriting credit. The majority of the tracks are unreleased. Those that have been released before are included here for reasons of context and in much better sound quality than has been previously available. "
