Mix Rick James and michael Jackson together and it equals this song. Love it! I wish I could say the same for everything else Eddie released music wise.

michael likes to party all the time doesn't it sound like that too?

And we all know what type of party Eddie likes....

Interestingly,Rick James was blacklisted from MTV because,in the early 80s,he accused them of being racist. But this video (which features Rick) was all over MTV in late 1985 So he made it onto MTV via another artist.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

You wrote that in the whatzupwitu thread and I replied back to you while laughing so hard behind my screen
I watched it again today and he was so demanding telling eddie to get his ass in the studio, and those people in the studio during the choruses are soooo funny The way Rick is getting into it reminds me of MJ...I must say I love Rick's adlibs at the very end, best moment in the song
But seriously, though Eddie has a decent voice, he just has no charisma as a singer, was he doing this for comedy or serious?

I agree, i think Eddie has a decent voice to!
But just the song is 80's cheese... not that it's a bad thing
Also when Rick is all rocking & mimicking the drum machine... i mean he just really acted like this song was the shit Pistols sounded like "Fuck off," wheras The Clash sounded like "Fuck Off, but here's why.."- Thedigitialgardener

I'm a huge fan of 80's music and have been around it my whole life so I don't always laugh at the cheese or catch it though now it's slowly happening, but I first saw the video in the late 90's (late I know) and I just could not stop laughing and being hyper. And I was already familiar with Rick James and Eddie Murphy since the 80's, so it wasn't that. The groove of the song is hot too, something just ticked in me I guess, like they were all in on some joke and on some Mary Jane..... [Edited 3/13/12 17:25pm]

Rick James said in his book that Eddie's label didn't know what to do with him but said he could mimic others real well (Stevie, MJ, Prince). Apparently he was saying "Eddie didn't stand a chance" in the music business.
Wasn't like he was lying. I still ain't forgave the brother for "Put Your Mouth on Me"...

I don't think MTV were racist per se. It's just that R&B and funk didn't fit in their format, which was rock and new wave, which was played on the Top 40 stations. They later started another channel (VH-1) for light rock & adult contemporary acts that didn't fit on MTV. After the Disco Sucks demolition (which was organized by white rock DJs), radio became more segregated. Performers who played R&B/funk was considered disco by default, so was mostly only played on R&B stations, which didn't have as many listeners as pop stations. This is when crossover started to become a goal. There was country crossover (Kenny Rogers), R&B crossover (Lionel Richie, Kool & The Gang), metal crossover (Bon Jovi), jazz crossover (Al Jarreau, Kenny G.), and rap crossover (Young MC). Acts that didn't dilute their sound had a harder time getting played (if at all) on the Top 40 stations. The main reason for crossover is because that's where the most listeners were, and so that's the way to make more money. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton
