Here's Morris Day's version. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Wow I have never, ever heard this song in my life. Where was I?

I don't know where you were kiddo...dunno at all!
It was a big sleeper hit tho...MJ on backing vocals and Berry Gordy's son "Rockwell" (ie Kennedy Gordy) doing the lead.
Great fun/novelty song of the era.

never heard that version before, thanks!

Relax, I was being sarcastic. I've loved this song since the late 80's/early 90's, if not earlier. Only I didn't know it was MJ in the background till a few years after I had a solid gold performance of rockwell doing it, so I didn't know it was MJ singing and thought it was all rockwell and enjoying it. I was like that upon discovering ABC in 93' as well on repeat. I liked mj in passing, but didn't call myself "a real fan" until 95/96 when rediscovering him and going all out since. Rockwell's first album was a pop/new wave masterpiece. Yes, I said materpiece damn it!

That's gon' always be a classic...

You should change the title to Michael Jackson Feat. Rockwell. Michael did most of the song and sang the chorus. Awesome song though. Perfect for Halloween.

Nah Michael only did the chorus, let's not go overboard.

I don.t want my topic was closed because of MJ sang three words in the song.
Rockwell's first album was a pop/new wave masterpiece. Yes, I said materpiece damn it! I would not go so far, of course, but the album is good enough.

Yep it was written, composed and arranged by a Gordy. Not a Jackson.

I always thought Michael wrote and produced it. Well then, Michael did do very little

Oy vey...it's MY sarcasm that you didn't get, but no nevermind. You honestly didn't recognize MJ's voice tho? This song came out in 84-85 (going by memory) so his voice was like the world's best known voice then.

Jermaine (who was on background vocals too) asked Mike to sing on it. The Gordy children were friends with the J5. It was said at the time that Rockwell's album was recorded & released without Berry's knowledge. Nah Rockwell and Curtis Anthony Nolen wrote and produced it. Jermaine was actually the one who convinced Michael to do background vocals on it and he's on there too.

Really, Jermaine? I can't even hear him

Jermaine's parts are "oh-whoa-oh" and there's a falsetto whoop he brings out before the initial fade of the single version (in his best Marvin Gaye voice lol).

The more you tell me the less work I realise Rockwell did

Rockwell did the lead vocals. He knew he didn't have the voice to reach as high as Michael or Jermaine lol they did him a favor. Berry Gordy didn't know his son wanted to be a rock singer until the song was released. Afterwards he was like "hmm, interesting". I'm sure Rockwell still gets paid millions for the song...

In hindsight, I betcha Berry LOVES this song, compared to the songs that his other son and grandson released as LMFO "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

You know it! If it hadn't been hits, he'd been shaming LMFAO.

I think he shakes his head, everytime he hears one of their songs.... "Love is like peeing in your pants, everyone sees it but only you feel its warmth"

Either that or go the bank

Or both. | |

soooo..Rockwell is Redfoo's half brother. And Michael sang on the song cause Jermaine was married to Gordy's daughter. [Edited 3/11/12 18:54pm]

^^Berry's other son Kerry was in the 1970's group Apollo. I think Teena Marie was originally in this band, but didn't record with them. Not exactly sure about that though. I think she discussed this on her Unsung? Benny Medina was in this group. Benny was a music exec at Warner Bros. when Rick James was there. Rick James ragged on him in his book too Rick James called Benny a no-talent entertainer. Benny has been a talent manager (J Lo, Mariah & others), and a producer on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

The verses are weak as hell - but the chorus is class - thanks to MJ.
