Reading pali's quote, I've had this thought about Stanley Crouch's concern over Miles BB, what the hell, that is a commercial as jalapeƱo applesauce. There's a simple way to test that out, if anbody still has a " booming system " in their Impala. Play ANY track from BB while rolling down Florence and Normandie, nnnnnnnnnnnnoooooooooobbbbbbbboooooddy would know what the fuck you're playing. Switch it up and play Flashlight or More Bounce and everybody would be smiling. That's why snobbery fucks things up when its not neccessary, that what this stems from. As it relates to Sting, working with Branford got them both recognition that may never happened were it Wynford instead.

Exactly...

Yup!

BTW, I don't think Wynton would've done it...hell, he's probably one of the people who thought that Branford was somehow "lowering" himself...but Branford's always been a fan of good Pop/R&B music...

I always get Wynton and Branford confused. Isn't Wynton the one who's the musical snob?

I think there may be a bit of playing it up in the "official" history of the album. It always helps if an artist is perceived as taking chances. But Sting was so popular at that point, he almost couldn't have failed no matter what he did.

It might've been a bigger controversy over the jazz side of things if that was the case but we know how people write someone's history...

Certainly as a 13 year old kid I was not aware of what the jazz community was saying about Branford Marsalis lol And they probably were talking about him selling out.

But I know the album was a huge hit, and all my friends were singing about "if the Russians love their children too" Kids and MTV were not really talking the makeup of the band at all

It really is a great album. Perfect blend of Sting's more intellectual side, but with the big hooks that made Police great.

lol I understand... but yeah they probably thought Branford had sold out. I didn't know jazz folks were that purist until I read Patrice Rushen's info online and was like "huh they were offended she went R&B, what?!" lol
