Yay!!! They should have been the 1st or close to it for an Unsung, IMHO. They were one of the 1st rap groups to blow up and their sound was on the cusp of the very old school vs what was to come.
Can't wait! | |

Definitely looking forward to this one. Loved them growing up and still love them today. Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up

Their story intrigues me more because they were painted as the clean cut guys of hip hop but apparently looking at the clips and promos these guys weren't as clean cut behind the scenes as we would think. Jalil seems to have gone through some stuff. Don't laugh at my funk

Bounce showed the episode with them performing the other morning... leather jacket, shorts and boots. Nick Ashford was someone I greatly admired, had the honor of knowing, and was the real-life inspiration for Cowboy Curtis' hair. RIP Nick. - Pee Wee Herman

Something wasn't right. I got turned off because I couldn't understand the speech at all. They never really got my full attention when they came out, but I respect them as innovators.

I liked this episode though as someone here pointed out they all did not aged very well. Interesting the show did not reveal their ages you assume they all must be approaching fifty. I thought Grandmaster Dee came across inarticulate boy was he was fine back in the day. They were innovators in regards to incorporating that techno sound to their music instead of sampling James Brown tracks. I wish they took the time to hire a lawyer to review their contract with Jive records. These record companies are something else. 'One Love' was the shit back in the day 'Five Minutes Of Funk' was the first song I heard from them and I was an instant fan.

Glad they mentioned that Whodini were the first rap group to earn a platinum album. I think RUN-DMC were next afterwards.

Whodini had a lot of good songs. The group had problems with their old label over money. They showed Jermaine Dupri dancing for them when he was a kid. Later on, Dupri gave them a deal. Kangol and Doctor Ice from U.T.F.O. used to be their dancers. Doctor Ice is Jalil's brother. They admit to drugs being around in those days, & it looks like it too. Ectasy and Jalil live in Atlanta now.

Yes. Ecstasy used to get a little peeved that historians would fuck up and not credit them as the first platinum rap act. Run DMC always got the credit. Anyway Whodini were my favorite rap act in the early 80's. I am actually digging on the Escape album now. They were the first rap act i went to see live on the fresh fest tour. I thought it was interesting that Chuck D was inspired by Whodini. I was digging Run DMC at the time too but Whodini just brought a whole different vibe to the rap game at the time. Watching the Unsung episode i got to see why there was such a delay from the group after the Open Sesame album. It was sad to see Jalil speech somewhat slurred from perhaps drug use but he seems to be well enough these days to perform. This is one group who i never thought would have gotten caught up in the drug world because they always came off as clean cut and intelligent and their songs were songs that your parents could listen to. When I saw their story last night, I thought "wow, they gave Run, D and them TOO much credit."
- E-mail - orgNote - ![]() |
I never knew they were the first group to go platinum that credit always seem to belong to RunDMC maybe because of the Raising Hell album. Jalil and Ecstasy deserves much credit as rap lyricists as Chuck D pointed out.
