The 2012 Experience Hendrix Tour

March 07, 2012

The 2012 edition of the Experience Hendrix Tour, featuring an all-star lineup of performers playing the music of the late Jimi Hendrix, got under way Tuesday night in North Bethesda, Maryland.

Among the artists who will take the stage during the trek are Aerosmith's Brad Whitford, The Doors' Robby Krieger, former Hendrix bassist Billy Cox, blues legend Buddy Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble drummer Chris Layton. Not all of the musicians will play at every concert, and special guests will be featured at select shows.

In a phone interview earlier this week, Whitford revealed that the participating musicians won't be rehearsing together at all.

"On other tours, bands will typically show up in the afternoon and do a 30- to 60-minute soundcheck," he explained. "But everybody here knows what they're doing. We just show up and get to it."

The Aerosmith guitarist, who was lucky enough to see Hendrix perform back in 1968, said of the revered rock star, "He had a style that had never been seen before. His showmanship, aura and technique made him such a powerhouse at the time, and he still really holds that stature for many today."

The 2012 Experience Hendrix Tour will make a total of 21 stops around the U.S., and will wrap up March 31 in Denver.
