In a 1969 interview, Jimi Hendrix voiced a frustrated defense of his artistic ambitions ... "What I don't like is this business of trying to classify people," he said. "Leave us aloneā€¦ It's like shooting at a flying saucer as it tries to land without giving the occupants a chance to identify themselves."

Also let's not forget dude was still 16 when he wrote and recorded it.

16? Wow. Interesting bit of trivial.

That's true, scientifically there's no such thing as different "races" either but again the world and its history..... we still have to keep it real. lol

We have to understand both sides, but know that "the Real" is scientifically correct?

This kid, I don't think would be mistaken for 'black' at all, he could pass for a lot of other groups,

Yeah, if I saw Shuggie, I would never think he is wholly black. He is obviously mixed.

Well if we are gonna judge people phenotypically -- I don't know about your family but I think this isn't all to uncommon no -- you get the gamet of everything. To assume features consistently tell the whole story.... We have a President who if he didn't tell you his mom wasn't white, I don't think you'd assumed he was biracial either. I'll leave it at that.

Well, let me get a bit off topic here-my cousin just had a baby. Now she, is like most of my family-she is very light, with blondish hair and green eyes. Her hubby is brown skinned, as is his whole family. The baby came out very light, with blue green eyes-the husband's mother is telling her son to get a paternity test because she feels there is no way that the baby should be as light as it is. Insane.

And yes, Ms Trina, you are right, re Obama.

People like that are stupid. I got two nephews who had blond hair (both of their hair is black now) and they're light-skinned. My elder nephew is lighter (he has my mom's complexion actually) but his maternal grandmother kept saying that that wasn't my brother's son (and it was). In fact he looks a lot like mom it's almost eery...

Yeah, it's not a good situation, esp since my cousin almost died giving birth.

What?!

I hate to say it, but your cousin needs to slap the taste outta her mother-in-law's mouth. She's just asking for it.

My cousin's mom in law didn't want her son marrying my cousin because my cousin was too light and too "uppity"

Therein lies the root of her disdain for your cousin: ignorance, self-hatred and a refusal to examine something in her own past.

Golly, how'd I miss this guy?! Me the lover of lyrical guitarists everywhere! cool "Purple" is eek in a GREAT way. His tone puts me in mind of Buddy Guy. So far, I've heard a few songs and I'm quite impressed w/ his versatility. Imma need a bigger Shuggie fix! wink

BTW, his father seems familiar to me via Etta James. Am, I on the right track here?

As for his race, if I just looked at pics w/o any context, I might assume Northern African (ie Arab, Berber, etc..), Turkic, Polynesian, or even Southern European for Shuggie. Bobby DeBarge.... Southern European (he's strongly "French looking", IMHO). Both of these men strongly take after their fathers physically. I wouldn't assume that either one were of immediate SubSaharan (West) African ancestry or even that they were at all. Of course, this has nothing to do w/ how they choose to self-identify (nor do I know how they ID), but since we're adding our -$.98 about this I figured I'd say it. lol

I agree, but it's only because of a strict, code of black n white country(not world) we live in.

If Obama was born in 1700's we would (Africans & Euros) assume he was probably biracial or identify him as mulatto

But we are looking at different variations of mixture.

I wouldn't look at Lena Horne and assume she was black nor Mariah Carey or Jennifer Beals

Lisa Lupinetti (who loved men of the African persuasion) assumed I was Indian or Arab

Speaking for myself, you're wrong. I'd assume he was biracial OR someone who was not a of Black American descent. To me, his features are atypical of most Black Americans (be they of "mixed race" or not) I've seen, but that does make some sense when you consider it. His descent is of East African origin while most Black Americans are of West African origins. IOW, he may be a "brotha" but not by way of Alabama! lol lol
