MNDA An Early Review

"I Don't Give A..." feat. Nicki Minaj
Wake up,
This is your life,
Children on your own,
Gotta plan on the phone,
Meet the press,
Buy a dress,
Do all this to impress...
Do ten things at once
And if you don't like it
I don't give a...
I tried to be the perfect wife...
I diminished myself...
It swallowed me...
If I was a failure
Then I don't give a...

Tour-de-force moment on the album. recounting a typical day, becomes intensely honest, telling-off of her critics. The track builds up to a genius, choral, almost Tom Burton-esque conclusion.
----------------------------------------

"Gang Bang"
Shot you dead,
Shot my lover in the head...
I'm going straight to hell...
I've got a lot of friends there
Drive bitch, die bitch

Very theatrical vocals about taking revenge on a lover who ruined her life. She apparently yells on the record "Drive bitch, Die bitch!" Kind of Stupid, kind of amazing, kind of funny and kind of fucked up! Full of one essential thing that her contenders lack: DRAMA!

As the song progressives, so does Madonna. Her voice gets much more aggressive, and it's clear she is out to take revenge on her past lover. "I'm going straight to hell, and I've got a lot of friends there," Madonna says. "If I see that bitch in hell, I'm gonna shoot him in the head again, 'cause I wanna see him die. Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over and Over."
The end is terrific, and it may cause controversies, especially because it is a woman to express this way. Someway, it may be compared to the video of What It Feels Like For A Girl . "I said drive bitch. And while you're at it, die bitch. Now if you're gonna act like a bitch, then you're gonna die like a bitch."

----------------------------------------

"Turn Up The Radio"
Strongest most immediate section on MDNA. Begins like a delicate ballad, pleading the audience to stop for a moment and get away from the world through music. May sound trite, but there's urgency in it's simplicity. Transforms into the albums most pounding moment, reaching a climax that threatens to blow the speakers. Some might find it unusually generic, but she makes it her own. Sure to please fans, fill dancefloors, shake clubs and find a slot on the next series of Glee
----------------------------------------

"Superstar"
One of the later highlights on the album. The sweetest song she has released since "Cherish". Twirls along, an open-top summer anthem. Serenading a new lover with a hypnotic chorus. It's simple and pretty and a perfect song to sing on her summer concerts! And should definately be a single!
----------------------------------------

"Falling Free"
Deep melancholia! One of the saddest songs she has ever written.
----------------------------------------

"Beautiful Killer"
80's sounding, string laden song as a tribute to french actor Alain Delon
----------------------------------------

Most of MDNA is about having fun, but this is also a very dark album! If like a Prayer was her divorce record and Hard Candy suffered, one senses, from being put together as her relationship with Guy Ritchie was falling apart. Then MDNA is a fuck you - to her marriage, the life that came with it, and partly to herself for losing her identity in a partnership. She is out there to recpature who she is, and she has demons to slay!

Overall it might not have the serious pop intensity of Confessions, it's not as a drastically new or experimental as music critics might like, but it's fun, fucked up, dancey, and full of drama. It's what her fans have been waiting for: a wallop enough of an album to put her back up there, a checkmate against Lady Gaga, who despite her brilliance, doesn't quite give you songs that are as easy to disco dance to as some of these are. Is Madonna still "the Queen" as Nicki Minaj gabs at one point? On the strength of MDNA, it's hard to argue against.

The Quiet Before The Storm
It really looks like the quiet before the storm, right? Let's take advantage of this sunny weekend to make a recap on the latest info and tibits about MDNA.

Let's start with Gang Bang, that is a song we're particularly fond of - not only because we were the first to name it and describe it's vibe, back in November 2011 - but also because it is certainly going to be one of the most talk-about tracks on MDNA.

When you first heard "Gang Bang", the song was titled "Bang Bang", and was a nice mid-tempo track co-produced by William Orbit which carried a certain nostalgic mood and rather intimate lyrics.
The song is written together with Mika, and it seems that the drama which was clearly perceived in what has now to be considered an unreleased demo wasn't settled, and instead had the power to continue transforming the song in the one you're going to listen in the new album, both lyrically and musically.
"Gang Bang" still tells the story of a love affair ending in disaster à la "Til Death Do Us Part", but it looks like that pain and anger transformed the ballad and drove it "straight to hell" as a disco stomper.

"Gang Bang" is certainly not the only song to have granted MDNA its Explicit Lyrics sticker (which we love!), but its inner power also stormed the album tracklist and formats which - as Matt at BoyCulture reports, are now spread over 5 different album configurations.

MDNA will come out both physically and digitally in 2 Standard configurations, one Explicit with the 12 song tracklisting you already know and another Edited version which is missing "Gang Bang" and therefore counts 11 songs only.

The 17 track Deluxe Edition will be released as Explicit only, digitally and physically. It segues from the Standard edition with 4 more songs and a bonus remix. The physical released is spread over 2-discs.

The iTunes only special version from the global pre-order offer that followed the Super Bowl performance shares the tracklisting of the Deluxe Edition with an exclusive 18th song. Announced as an "exclusive remix from Madonna's new album", the song is in fact a beautiful Acoustic Version of "Love Spent".

Last but not least - especially for collectors - MDNA will also be released in a special "clean" format exclusive to US retailer WalMart. This Deluxe Edited release will be a physical only 16 track album, missing both "Gang Bang" and "I Fucked Up", and with the Laidback Luke Remix of "Give Me All Your Luvin'" dropped in to put the album total up to 16.

With the Acoustic Version of "Love Spent" now announced, you start to see why it was not surprising to listen to William Orbit talking about Madonna "adding tracks" to the Orbit share in the album. As we reported right after Orbit's appearance as a guest editor on the BBC World "The Strand" broadcast on March 1st, Madonna and William Orbit have been planning some additional acoustic versions since a while. "The last time we heard about it there was no final decision on how these extra tracks were going to be used" - we reported - "but for sure they found a great way to let us all enjoy them soon..."

And while we're in British territory, let's spend a couple of words about "Masterpiece".
News broke from BBC Radio2 earlier this week that the beautiful Madonna song from the "W.E." soundtrack and the MDNA album was named Record of the Week, which means that UK listeners were able to hear the song every day this week during the Ken Bruce and Alex Lester show, and was also added to the B list across the Heart Network nationwide.

To shed some light over this news, MadonnaTribe can report that Polydor came up with the idea to release Masterpiece to the radio in the UK market after mainstream channels have expressed interest in the song because of its potential to attract a wider and "traditional" audience. The song will impact on April 2nd.

To wrap all this up, let's get back to where it all started: "Give Me All Your Luvin'" has finally been released in CD Single!
As you remember the kick off single from MDNA is going to be released as a 2-Track single next week, but GMAYL is already out in Germany and other European territories with street dates set to Fridays.
The CD will hit the stores in more markets on Monday and Tuesday.
