US Charts: Whitney Houston Sets New Record

whitney houston1 US Charts: Whitney Houston Sets New Record / Adele Remains #1

In at #2, 6 and 9 respectively are ‘Whitney: The Greatest Hits‘, ‘The Bodyguard’ and ‘Whitney Houston‘, making Whitney the first woman in Billboard history to have three albums in the top ten at the same time.

Selling a total of 320,000 albums and 373,000 tracks in the last week alone, sales of her music are set to rise even further.

For, in a bid to capitalize on the renewed interest in her discography, major retailers have begun stocking her music this week to drive physical sales up, as most of her sales last week were generated digitally.

Full chart check below…

Elsewhere, Adele is setting a few records of her own with ’21′. Indeed, with 22 weeks spent atop the Billboard 200, it is now the longest running #1 album since Prince‘s 1984 release, ‘Purple Rain’.

Moving 297,000 copies in the last week, the album sits 6 spots above its predecessor ‘19‘, which sold 39,000 units since the last week’s tally.

At #14 is Rihanna’s ‘Talk That Talk‘ with 23,202 units and at #54 is Beyonce‘s ’4‘ shifting 9,184 units bringing its total sales to 1,144,844.

Prince's record is almost getting beat.............

It didn't beat Purple Rain if it's the longest running #1 album since Purple Rain. wink

Right. And actually, Prince doesn't even hold the record. 21 is just the longest-running #1 SINCE "Purple Rain." "Purple Rain" isn't the record holder.

I mean it's unfortunate that people didn't appreciate her until her death-folks should've been buying her music before then.

She had sold, what, 170 million albums? And was one of the top selling artists of the '80s & '90s based on only a handful of albums and soundtracks. People did buy them.

As with MJ, the impediment of Whitney selling music in the last 10 years of her life was Whitney herself.

It could mean that her three albums didn't hit the Billboard charts simultaneously in the top ten when she was alive to see it. Why now? That's how I am interpreting it shrug

Has a living artist ever had 3 albums in the Top Ten at the same time?

This is no surprise. She was a superstar and now she's dead. Of course there is going to be lots of renewed interest in her music.

Whitney breaking more records is a beautiful thing. She did it in life(mainly in the 80s and 90s granted) and now in death. Sure she could've gotten more of a break in later years. But it seems we have to lose things to really appreciate them. Anyhow, its cool folks are trying to get back to what really matters, her voice & artistry...

Don't understand why Whitney didn't try to get writers credit on all those songs she recorded. I'm sure Babyface would have let her. I mean Bobby did. Beyonce does & doesn't write her songs. But lies & says she does.disbelief

She really should have contributed to the songwriting on her albums.Obviously, she couldn't contribute to the cover songs that she recorded (such as "I Will Always Love You") but she could have written some lyrics on the 'new' songs that producers submitted to her.Like you mentioned,Babyface would have been more than willing to co-write with her and use some of her lyrics.A song like "Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" isn't all that deep anyway...lol...surely Whitney could have written something like that.

Whitney was more honest than money hungry it seems. If she really cared about her assets, she could've done what some of the other artists have done or did or had their managers do (like Elvis' manager) but she honestly didn't care to add her name nor was really serious about being a songwriter. She just wanted to sing - like Judy Garland and the like. Songwriting was secondary to her and she didn't care much about how to come up with a song so it was easier for her to sit back while Babyface and L.A. worked on songs for her.

But no one here still hasn't answered the question on how much you get paid for being an executive producer - which Whitney was for most of her albums. And she's also credited in most songs after 1990 as a producer/co-arranger. I think she co-arrange her version of the Star Spangled Banner and also arranged or co-arranged "I Will Always Love You" and "I'm Every Woman", how much do you get paid if you're an executive producer/record producer/arranger? I'm sure it's not as much as songwriting credits but still don't you get a good amount of dolo from that?
