I gotta be honest....Side One of this album is excelent but the second half falls flat boxed this song,"Do Like You" and "Lately" are mediocre songs.

I grudgingly accept the fact that the those songs you referenced are musically nondescript. "Lately", however, is striking and beautiful. "Cash in Your Face" gets tiresome after awhile.

You just could not know how long we tried
To see how this building looks inside
This must be a lucky day for me
Because the sign says there's a vacancy

Look I know you came a long way
But you made it just too late
So we had to give it to somebody else
Well I talked to you on the phone less than fifteen minutes ago
And you told me that it was cool
I graduated from Howard U.
My job is paying good money too
And if you check on my resume
You'll find they all wanted me to stay

Well I can't take the time out
To check your credit card
‘Cause the computer just broke down today
Well I'll stop by here tomorrow to complete our interview
But I know what you're gonna say
I know what your bottomline is

You might have the cash but you
Can...not cash in your face
We don't want you living in here
Say you might have the cash but you
Can...not cash in your face
We don't want your kind living in here
Too-oo, Too-oo too bad,
Too-oo, too-oo too sad

Our first child is due here any day
That's why we're desperate for a place to stay
The location is so perfect too
So please try to do what you can do

Well in this apartment complex no children are allowed
And if you told me that I could have saved you alot of time
Well I thought the Bill was passed that said you could not discriminate
But I know some excuse you'll find
Because your bottom line is

You might have the cash but you
Can...not cash in your face
We don't want you living in here
Say you might have the cash but you
Can...not cash in your face
We don't want your kind living in here
Aye, you might be a great doctor
You might be a great lawyer
You might possess the key to the city
Or maybe a politician
You might have the cash but you
Can...not cash in your face
We don't want you living in here
Say you might have the cash but you
Can...not cash in your face
We don't want your kind living in here

I have been afraid to say that for years because I love Stevie. But, I tend to only really like the first side of Hotter Than July. Although, I love Lately.

Isn't "Master Blaster" on side 2 as well?

This is lunacy!

Love this song and Hotter Than July as an album (both sides!! lol).

The groove always reminds me of this track:

Notwithstanding "Master Blaster", "Rocket Love" and a couple of other tracks, it's only a marginally exciting album compared to his Godlike brilliance of the 1970s.

Hotter than July as an album was his last great album.

That said, I can't stand "Cash in Your Face" - though I usually love his socially conscious/political material, it seems the politics here overwhelmed the music in this one. I couldn't get down to it like I could, say, "You Haven't Done Nothin'".

I wouldn't call "Lately" weak though...

"Rocket Love", "Master Blaster", "Did I Hear You Say You Love Me", "All I Do" and "Lately" were basically the high points of the entire album to me.

Cash in Your Face is the worst song of HTJ, in my opinion

and Lately is just as good as any of his 72-76 classic ballads

Do Like You is catchy/upbeat enough...

Lately is classic Stevie. Has great depth to it. A lot of his "love ballads" focused on pursuing or being IN love but this one, the way he deals with suspicions of infidelity is JUST genius to me. I've always wondered if My Eyes Don't Cry is sort of its antithetical bookend due to the line....

"my eyes won't let me hide, cause they always start to cry"

Characters and the Jungle Fever Soundtrack still rank as great albums to me, not masterpieces, but largely great tracks with good writing

Characters and Jungle Fever were very good though it did have some fillers though, to me.

I can't believe you guys give credit to Characters, is the worst produced album of his career, full of bland synth-pop (mostly), he completely lost it during the 85-90 era...

lol I did say that album have fillers in it. lol I can't stand the Characters version of "My Eyes" because of that. neutral The best things about the album were "Skeletons", "You Will Know", "With Each Beat of My Heart" and "Free".

I used to dig it when I bought it at 11. But when I listened to the album again four years later, I was like "the fuck is this shit?" lol Needless to say I haven't played it since.

"Rain Your Love Down" and "For Your Love" were mainly the reasons I bought it... "For Your Love" is also his last classic too. I liked "The Edge of Eternity". And "Taboo to Love" was definitely a gem. But the rest of the album was hard to swallow. I don't know why I liked "Tomorrow Robins Will Sing" back then. confused I can't explain that. I remember bringing the tape of the single cassette to class and my classmates were all " confused lol razz " lol

Characters was yet another sucky Stevie album that showed flashes of creativity underminded by eye-raising filler. confused

I don't know whats so weak about it. I find it genius with the two different voices demonstrating two different characters each verse. (the racist and the minority) and strong lyrics. You can't CASH IN your face. Meaning you can achieve the biggest success in the world but you will still be judged by some by your skin color. All of that under a funky beat? Powerful.

^ I liked the direction he went in it, it just sounded "weak". Maybe he got a little lazy with the music. I could've seen him doing the music much harder than what he did it with. But I do agree about the message because it's true.
