Exclusive: Norah Jones, Target Team Up for Deluxe Little Broken Hearts

April 26, 2012

Target and Norah Jones are teaming up for a deluxe edition of Jones' new album Little Broken Hearts, featuring three exclusive bonus tracks. The set is due May 1 and will have a 6-month exclusive window on new songs "I Don't Wanna Hear Another Sound," "Killing Time" and "Out On The Road (Mondo Version)."

This is Target's second pairing with Jones. The retailer released a deluxe edition of Jones' last album The Fall in 2009 with exclusive content. That set has sold 850,000 copies since its release, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Anticipation for Little Broken Hearts also helped spike sales for her 10 million-selling 2002 set Come Away With Me last week, re-entering the Billboard 200 at No. 190. That album's sales coupled with 2004's Feels Like Home and 2007's Not Too Late made Jones Billboard's Top Jazz Artist of 2000-2009.

Jones debuted Hearts in full last month at South by Southwest to a packed showcase at La Zona Rosa. The Danger Mouse-produced album showcases a slightly darker, more rock-tinged sound for Jones, and details the many phases of a bitter breakup. Lead single "Happy Pills" deals with the relationship's immediate aftermath, while tracks "Miriam" and "4 Broken Hearts" deal with infidelity.

"When you have someone like Norah who has such a unique sound, it's hard not to get excited when a new album comes out," says John Butcher, Target's VP of entertainment. Target will help promote the album via limited TV spots, a significant in-store presence and a social-media campaign. "We want to make sure we get the word out to our guests when we have extra content so that her fans will find Target," Butcher says.

Though SoundScan-reported CD sales are down 8.7% year-to-date as of the week ending April 15, Target continues to see impressive record sales from some of its exclusive titles.

The February release of Adele's 21 deluxe edition, for example, became Target's No. 2 highest-selling title of all time, Butcher says, second only to Taylor Swift's Speak Now in 2010. Other 2012 exclusives from Dierks Bentley ( Home) and The Fray ( Stars and Stories) have posted strong sales, too.

Best tracks on the album are "Say Goodbye" which is super funky, love her playing on that, "Little Broken Hearts" is beyond sad, great heartfelt writing on this album, just to the non-norah fans, dont think you are going to get an upbeat sounding record or dance tracks or something like that, this is just well crafted songs, break up type lyrics, and some great playing with her current band lineup

This will be the first Norah Jones album I've bought in many a year. She has condensed the done-me-wrong songs into a darkly beautiful (sometimes murderous) narrative, and that's a welcome departure.
