Good question....
Either Hot 97FM or Power 105.1 in NYC will preface a song with "Back in the day, 199_ and then play a Biggie Smalls record! Well, I guess this isn't as bad as calling it "old school" but it always sounds weird to me. For me, old school is at least 15 years; however, I consider it to be the music I grew up listening to. So, while early Prince is old school, so is Marvin Gaye, and Sly & the Family Stone, for example. btw, when I was growing up, a generation used to be considered a quarter of a century. Now I think it's every 20 years. [This message was edited Sun Feb 23 11:53:59 PST 2003 by UptownDeb]

Diamonds & Pearls can't be called old school, I'd say anything from the 80s and prior fits the definition better.

Old School is a sound IMO. Be it R&B or Hip Hop, when you say old school I hear it rather than think of acts. I would say the song Gimme by Jill Scott is old school even though it's only a year old. That's just the way i view it. Bringing Together Five Decades of R&B/Funk/Soul/Dance
