I thought about that when writing Chic, but do most people still know about Chic? I don't know. Fans of Chris Brown may say, "Who?" Tom Browne, & I will add Bernard Wright.

Major Harris? who is that? Jade was a one hit wonder and along with Zhane, they are 90s. too recent "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Here are the artists I would LOVE to see featured on Unsung.
Roy Ayers Willie Hutch Gil Scot-Herron Labelle (to me the greatest girl group ever) Patrice Rushen Larry Graham
Btw - There are some really great choices listed on this thread - Shuggie Otis, Billy Paul and Cheryl Lynn are all great suggestions. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

That's incorrect. Jade nor Zhane were not one hit wonders. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

She may have meant one album wonders but nevertheless i loved Jade and Zhane Don't laugh at my funk
This funk is a serious joint

Oh okay, that makes a little more sense even though Zhane I know had at least two albums that I can name songs off of. And yes I loved them both as well. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Jade and Zhane both had good followup albums but probably not as popular to the general public as their debut releases. Don't laugh at my funk

Yes I agree. I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

WOW! You picked the ones I was about list.....I would also like to see the Whispers, and Leon Sylvers III by himself. Very underated writer & producer. Nice picks

Major Harris had the hit "Love won't let me wait" remade by Luther Vandross & he was one of the lead singers of The Delfonics...He is definitely "Unsung" He use to live in my building a couple of years ago & he is not in good shape...
I would like to add this person. His life is scandalous. I doubt if he will agree to it. He won't even come on the internet anymore. Due to all the nasty horrible remarks people make about him..

Tevin Campbell

Great choices, especially my man Roy Ayers. I imagine most people know "Everybody loves the Sunshine," but his catalogue is so deep. And the hip-hop generation would recognize a good part of his songs just from samples.

I nominate these guys, especially since I didn't know they were still around in some form with three of their founding members until I bought tix and went to see them tonight--the Dazz Band! I really wanna know their back story now!

Tevin Campbell is a wonderful idea even tho he's rather recent. His sitch was the prototype of the "unsung" formula. Besides, unlike the usual drugs/booze stories, the scandal that runied his career was a bit more spicy!
Here's a few more for consideration:
Johnny Mathis Charlie Pride Johnny Nash
Hey, why not? In many ways, these guys were pioneering Black artists. They have fame and all everywhere else but the community that they came from. Besides, since Unsing has touched a bit on Johnny Mathis via Deneice Williams, so why not do a full ep on him? His career surely has the longevity to justify one.
As for Johnny Nash, he helped prepare American and the UK audiences for reggae. In fact, Bob Marley wrote some of his biggest hits before The Wailers blew up.

Betty Davis | |

I think Betty might be too obscure for Unsung. Now I'm all about Betty Wright being on there "Lack of home training crosses all boundaries."

Yes Yes to Shuggie Otis. He was ahead of his time. I would like to see Ready for the World and Chante Moore too.

Yes! I think Roy is very underrated. His catalog is certainly deep. The Ubiquity stuff just floors me everytime I listen to it. He had the groove, the message, the style. Who else did what he did on his instrument? His work has been sampled and remade by so many artists. Yet, many people have no idea who he is. I would LOVE to see Roy featured on UnSung. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...
