I thought we might have a chance at putting it to a rest too until I saw this thread. |

To me this song sounded unfinished - but good.
Looking back, I can see why Michael didn't include it in Dangerous - it didn't fit the album's direction. His outtakes for Dangerous were quite interesting. |

Why not just use the sticky? Where are the mods?
Anyway, great song. People say Teddy Riley helped produced this, but as a fan of both producers, it sounds more like Bryan Loren's work, particually in the idea to use that synthed up voice as a riff, along with with the drums. Teddy's drums hit harder to put it bluntly.
What do you guys think?
I'm not very familiar with Bryan Loren's work but I agree it's like signature Teddy Riley thing to have loud drum sound, especially when it's up to the point where it blends the vocals out, I don't really like it. Although it works really well through out the album, but like I said, I'd prefer if they put Serious Effect instead of Why U Wanna Trip on Me.
Despite the presence of LL cool J, which no doubt Teddy knew, it still sounds more like the work of Bryan Loren. It's more lite and poppy then Teddy's work at that time. I could be wrong of course, but its allegedly from 1989-early 1990, which actually makes my point even stronger as Iam pretty sure Teddy didn't come on board to work with Mike until 1990 sometime.
Wheres Bboy87, he would know LOL.
And "why you wanna" is much better then "serious effect" to me. That intro still slays me. |

Serious Effect was recorded in '90. I think this was actually produced by Michael and Bryan. Teddy didn't join Michael until that summer. I think SE was recorded that spring. |

I see your point but nah LOL. Both great intro's, but I prefer the intro to "trip" though. After that searing guitar riff, those drums just hit you for 6. Sonically it's much preferred to "when doves cry" for me. The whole album of "Purple rain" sounds flat to me. Needs remastering or some shit.... |

The intros to Why You Wanna Trip and When Doves Cry don't compare at all except the fact that guitars were used lol |

I think Serious Effect has a strong intro just like Why You Wanna Trip On Me. They are both equal in that regard.
The song was recorded in 1990.
Teddy is credited as being the main producer for Serious Effect along with Michael but Bryan Loren released a statement on his Myspace not to long after Michael passed that that was an unreleased track that he worked with Michael among many other songs.
With that being said still not 100 percent sure but Im going with Bryan on this. I can see why it has been really confusing because so many sources credit Teddy.

Yeah, the book "man in the music" states Teddy and Mike, so I guess it is, as I presume someone checked with the publishers (BMI or whomever?), but it REALLY sounds like Lorens work and the timeline suggests this. Check "do the bartman" or anything he did around that time. All sound similar.
Teddy heldid work on The Jacksons "she" around the same time (1989), and that track slams alot harder then "serious effect". I can't see Mike being satisfied with himself and Teddy for "Serious effect". Mike brought Teddy in for a hard rnb sound. "Serious effect" isn't quite that. Still a great track though don't get me wrong.

Yea Bryan wrote and produced that track and they do sound similiar in style.
I'm still really confused about this their are Blogs and interviews where Bryan is suggesting he worked with Michael on Serious Effect but then all the sources point to Teddy Riley... I dunno. Its possible they credit Riley because he was the main producer for Dangerous while he might not have necessarily worked on that unreleased song... but then its possibly Bryan is not being accurate... I dont know now I really want to know
