School me on CAMEO

I've been reading about them and they seem like an 80's version of Earth, Wind and Fire who I adore. I'm familiar with their mid-80's hits but I know nothing else about them. So I need the org to educate me on them. biggrin cool

Give me their best albums, songs and what greatest hits would be the most beneficial to converting from casual listener to enthusiatic fan. wink

Stevie Wonder = EARTH
Prince = WIND
Chaka Khan = FIRE
Sade = WATER

All of their music on Chocolate City / Casablanca label is amazing.

The two-disc collection "Cameo Gold" is pretty good for starters.

Cameo is arguably my second all-time favorite band. A definitive funk band that made lots of changes with their sound, but it still was funky to the core.

My Cameo two-disc set goes something like this:

DISC ONE:

"Slyde"

"Be Yourself"

"You Make Me Work" (remix version)

"Your Love Takes Me Out"

"Keep It Hot"

"Sparkle"

"Feel Me"

"Hangin' Downtown"

"Why Have I Lost You"

"I Just Want To Be" (extended version)

"Talkin' Out The Side Of Your Neck"

"Single Life"

"Candy"

"I Want It Now" (remix version)

DISC TWO:

"She's Strange"

"Freaky Dancin'"

"Word Up!" (remix version)

"Shake Your Pants"

"Flirt"

"I Care For You"

"It's Over"

"We're Goin' Out Tonight"

"Don't Be Lonely"

"Attack Me With Your Love" (remix version)

"Rigor Mortis"

"Alligator Woman"

"Back And Forth"

"Skin I'm In"

EWF was a mixture of many sounds in black popular music -- a utopian view of the world mixed in with some Sly & The Family Stone, throw in some harmonies from the Motown era, some pop, The Tower of Power horns, some African, Carribean and Brazilian rhythms, some gospel and some contemporary jazz.

Cameo was like a combination of The Ohio Players' funk with traces of Parliament-Funkadelic's experimental concepts. In fact, Cameo was originally known as The New York Players and Cameo's co-founder Blackmon's delivery brings into mind The Ohio Players' Leroy "Sugarfoot" Bonner.
