Soul Train had the best dancers, then people started gettin' paid from music videos. The end days of Soul Train were different from the earlier glory days.
Soul Train was still cool, but then the great dancers were going on tour, & getting paid for videos. Everyone knows they served the dancers chicken and soda, though they got exposure & contacts, they were still known for "dancin 4 chicken". |

Not really. But instead of taking this thread off-topic, just read my first thread of 2012 concerning my return to the org:

Can you have a show with people who can't dance? What are we gonna see, 60 minutes of women backing it up grinding away on a guy's package? Or better yet brothas lining the walls, like make-shift support beams.
Soul Train had a place and a time and yes, it was very special. If folks wanna to relive that, they'd be best buying the Soul Train dvd set. |

It's ridiculous to revive it. It was a dance show and there's no danceable music being made anymore. Since "there's good new music out there but you have to search for it" as so many people like to say around here, I doubt the show will "search" for this "good new music" and will just throw on whatever is on the radio these days. Well hell, that's what the show was doing all the way up until 2006 and apparently it wasn't working in the later years or it wouldn't have gone off the air. You just can't have a dance show in this day and age unless it's ballrooom dancing or something like that because there's no danceable music out there. Andy is a four letter word. |

I would be heffers popping their asses 90 miles an hour to a tempo that's only 15 miles an hour. Every time I see them do it these days, I wonder why they don't just slow the tape of them dancing to an extreme slow motion. At least it would match the tempo to what they're dancing to. Old Soul Train took that ish seriously. They had matching outfits, coordinated dances, they weren't playing around. The later shows just had a different feel to me. |

People are missing the bigger picture. You can take the Soul Train format and easily update for today's generation. It wouldn't necessarily have dancers and a soul train line but it could be a great platform where you would have an audience in studio with performers of the day coming in to promote their music. 106&Park, Solid Gold, TRL etc are all from the Soul Train / American Bandstand format just tailored for a different generation. If they had the right hosts and the right set up, this could actually work. I really hope they put a lot of thought into this if it ever materializes.
That's called recycling as I said in my post. So if 106 & Park is considered "today's version/form of Soul Train" then what's the point in REVIVING the actual Soul Train show once again? It defeats the purpose. Besides the music of today's generation is mostly shit. Who would stay up and watch it? It's a new generation. Kids today don't stay up and watch shows, they have already seen the "leaked" version on the internet before it's even aired on television. These aren't the days when folks used to loyally stay up to catch stuff like the Arsenio Hall show which was a "must see".
No offense but you just sound mad and old. Hunny, there is NOTHING new under the sun so your whole argument about it being recycled is just dumb. Hollywood recycles stuff all the time and that is just what it'll be. If you have such a creative and innovative mind then please make a career in entertainment and save us all. Otherwise be quiet and lets see how this pans out. Nobody knows what approach they will take in doing this so I'm not gonna sit here and speculate. I'm tired of old folks always bitching about the lack of talent or this or that YET when someone tries to do something about they bitch even more and try to dismiss it. Soul Train would never work today. Ever. All the women would be horribly dressed/half-naked doing stupid perverted dances, while all the guys would be standing together in a corner of the studio dressed like reject skateboarders. The coolness of Soul Train cannot exist now. That mentality is dead. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

Yup...there's no way around these facts. The Soul Train brand was primarily about dancing, not merely live acts or introducing new music. The fact that it limped on until '06 was more hope over reality. I'd have more hope for this revival IF the music were danceable, but it ain't.

Meh, it's not about being old (not that there's anything wrong w/ that ) but about knowing what branding means. This show is not some old Hwood movie or even an old song, it had a distinct purpose. For starters, ST had it's birth out of the Civil Rights Movement and the funk/soul music of that time. In short, there was a Black Pride political undertone that can't be dismissed (recall the makeup and hair prods commericals that ST produced?!). In that regard, it was a VERY new concept at the time.
On YouTube, the young kids watch the excerpts and love it. They constantly comment on how DIFFERENT things were then as compared to now....the music, the style, the huge afro 'tude, and how skinny the dancers were. THEY know fully well that it's not translatable or transferrable to this era. If the kids are saying this, why assume only oldsters are being cranky when they say "naw...leave it be"?
Tell me, if you revive a ST w/o the dancing and w/o the politicial undertone, what do you have?

They comment on how different things are because nobody is doing that these days. You are speculating what the show will be without the political undertone and without dancing...... I'm not gonna get into a discussion without FACTS and knowing exactly what approach they will take. You don't know what changes will be made if they make changes. Hi Brooksie, so refreshing to hear from someone with some sense.
Yes I fall right at the very beginning of when Generation Y begins. To answer your question...I'm not too sure what would make it work if this comes to pass. So let's think about it, Soul Train featured dancers who performed dances from that time period, so what dances are popular now that regular folks do (but at the same time takes skill)? For the younger Generation Y folks, I'm not sure what makes them tick. I'm an early 80's baby so I come from that time frame where I was glued to the TV looking at music videos....like for instance, Video Soul. Sure I watched Soul Train but not to the extent of how it was consumed when it originated during the baby boomer generation. I just know that my younger cousins who are in high school, they are mostly either stuck to their cell phone or lap top computer rather than a television. Discussing music and the artist we enjoy or dislike can be as volatile as sharing opinions about politics, religion, and sex. That being said.
We all have and share strong opinions but insulting and/or calling people out of their names is truely a no, no. The good thing about the org is people do police themselves and keep things above board and respectfull. By all means debate ferociously but stay on point; once you've started name calling and/or cussing at people you've lost... being heard. Let it go and try to stay cool. (IMHO)
It can be hard at times, I had to apologize to a fellow org last year. Though he couldn't let it go, I should've.
