The 10 Best UNSUNG Episodes So Far… UNSUNG is along the same line as Soul Train in the sense that a MUCH NEEDED and much deserved series dedicated to the amazing accomplishments of black music would absolutely never get the exposure it deserves if it were not for a show like this. Hard to believe that Soul Train premiered 40 years ago and 40 years later there is STILL a lack of diversified black programming on the networks. While I may not agree with everything Radio One does, Cathy Hughes and Alfred Liggins get a HUGE thumbs up for TV One. I have no doubt this network has amazing potential starting with their biggest hit show UNSUNG. I cannot tell you how many emails we get about the show and how much people love the show and the reviews that we do. I was not aware that Al B Sure was the original voice over person for the first season of UNSUNG. Not sure if you will agree on our favorites .. but s we thought there are the 10 Best Ones so far… Here goes…article link below

Been a fan of that show since Day One, but that list is a mess! Only a few picked were top 10(or even close) to me.

I agree on Vesta being number one but......The Sylvers episode is not even top 10?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Them(Sylvers) too, but also Minnie Riperton and Tammi Terrell. The Ohio Players I thought was better than many picked(dont know if top 10 but still). Vesta's was good but I feel had she not died it wouldn't have been as 'must see'. I didn't feel like I learned much about her or anything I didn't know. [Edited 2/17/12 11:44am]

My favorite is Millie. I love someone who laughs out loud like she does. Doesn't even need to be talking to anyone in particular, just bust out with a chuckle or a belly-laugh. Also, she uses the word bitch without intending or achieving disrespect; almost like she was saying "chick."
It was sadder, but the Sylvers episode was special. Teena and Debarge!!

I don't think I could get a list of my 10 favorites but my number one favorite was: Boosty Collins Funny, funky and just amazing.
Followed by my other favorites:
Vesta Bobby Womack Full Force The Bar-Kays Teddy Pendergrass
I think they should do an episode on Sam & Dave though and Johnny Taylor. I don't think they are truly unsung per se, but then again, most of these groups they've been doing epi's about aren't really "Unsung". [Edited 2/17/12 12:15pm] I will forever love and miss you...my sweet Prince.

Seeing his pics with the Stones and him looking like he and Mick Jagger were boyfriends, I'm not surprised at all. Rose Royce was another good one. Billy was a gay pioneer without saying he was. In Unsung, they pretty much said Billy was unapologetic about being gay though he didn't reveal it in public.

Billy, it seems, preferred young white men.
Forgot about Sylvester too. That was a REAL good one. Learnt some stuff about him that I didn't know - but was nevertheless not at all shocked by especially his early years as a drag queen renegade.

Yeah, Sylvester paved the way big time for lots of open gay artists black white and beige. Straight Jacket Funk Affair

Nooo *dead* ! I always knew but I respected his manner. Its not like he was Freddie J and some others.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah he wasn't closeted. Just didn't say it in public.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I really enjoyed the Sylvester episode.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Something he almost HARDLY gets credit for either...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
^I think it has something to do with the fact that alot of them don't come out RIGHT away like he did. If ever...
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Who, Sylvester? | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
No,it was in response to Sylvester not being credited! Its like if folks can't even come out/dodge around the issue than celebrating him like they should would be akward for them I guess. [Edited 2/17/12 13:37pm]

I read your post wrong lol I know what you're saying now. I also think it had to do with him being a Brother... Little Richard knew he'd be shot dead by blacks for revealing his own sexuality much less a white public that was still uneasy about seeing a black presence in the media (like that). But different times.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Even than Richard(outside of Sylvester) was bolder than stars who arrived much later on who clearly were what they were, yet felt the need to hide. Richard cut down the activity though(and probably is totally done w/ it) b/c of his church beliefs he said.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Oddly enough, when Richard started toning down (for real instead of just doing it for church stuff), he acknowledged that he was gay in some Penthouse interview some 15 years back. But yeah Richard didn't hide his sexuality that much especially in the 1960s and 1970s when he was literally humping his piano, half-nude.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
True, even in the 50s though it was obvious! Of course he couldn't say it, so its funny that we are way past the 50s yet some stars are still acting like we are. Like there was never a Richard or a Sylverster and a few others.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah like I said, it's a black thing. Richard, Billy and Sylvester should be commended for stepping up to the plate when others just produced "fake marriages".
