Santigold: ''I'm Disappointed With the State of Music''

February 27, 2012

Santigold has said that she is "disappointed with the state of music right now". The singer, who will release her new album Master Of My Make-Believe this Spring, told Pitchfork that she was not impressed by the lack of artistry in modern pop music.

Responding to allegations that the video for her new track ''Big Mouth'' was an attack on the likes of Lady Gaga, she said: '' I'm disappointed with the state of music right now, but it's not really about anybody specific. I think there's a lack of true art, and the fanfare is valued over actual substance. It's like you don't have to make good music to be f**king huge.''

She did, however, single out LMFAO for specific criticism, adding: "I'm sorry, but LMFAO performed at the Super Bowl? Aren't they a joke band? That type of sh*t makes me cry. I'm like, 'Really?'"

The singer – who did say that she was a fan of both Adele and Beyonce – also spoke about the theme of her forthcoming new album. "Most of the songs are about being in control of your world," she said. "That was a really important message for me as an artist in this process, but also in the world right now. We're in a weird place. There are so many riots and rebellions going on. It seems like a truth is coming out."

I know that people have a right to think what they want to think but I REALLY wish someone would be honest about that girl and stop saying just want is expected to say... What about Kelly Price, Ledsi?? etc they made great albums last year... Instead of focusing on mainstream why not give props to artists that are really trying to stay true to certain genres. They had pretty good radio airplay last year. Im really not trying to bash Beyonce but its almost as if... if you dont mention "Beyonce" in speaking about todays artists then your a hater or something is wrong with you. I really just dont get this whole notion that everyone besides Adele and Beyonce makes the best music today disbelief just my thoughts... I like Adele as well but their are other singers that are just as good that make good music to...

I've just come to the realization that people feed on what they are fed today. But there's no real excuse now. Comments like this are sickening. Real artistry still exists. It's on the internet. People are just lazy.

You know what's funny, it's people on mainstream labels or people managed by mainstream artists' labels that are saying the industry is "in trouble". You noticed that?

I have taken notice, and they are mostly correct.

Top 40 soul/RnB and pop is ghastly Euro-pop ear pollution. The real talent is either on indie labels or being ignored by radio.

Then maybe Santi should remain indie because if she thinks Jay-Z or Roc Nation would help her...

She's not one to go mainstream, and I can see why signing with Roc Nation might be counterintuitive. It's going to interesting to see how she goes forward without turning off her base.

Yeah that's what I'm most concerned about. Because if she comes with some fuck shit then she's part of the problem instead of the solution...

She doesn't sound very disappointed with the state of music of she's a fan of Beyonce. Hell, she's part of the problem too.

Because nothing has changed since even before then. People will stop singing the same old song when music stops singing the same old song and changes. Music has not done a 100% complete style change since the mid 1990s and styles used to change every five years or so. What are they supposed to do, just shut up and be quiet if they don't like something? Nothing gets changed that way.
