And perhaps his most iconic work:

^^ Was never a big fan of Slash's Snakepit. Just sounded like a bunch of second-rate GNR demos. Having said that, I never heard the second album.

don't be sure and don't give slash credit he didn't deserve.jinx jones is playing all guitars on free your mind. On the slash subject ,he is ok guitar player, but nothing special, and he showed weakness when he jammed with bands like chic or david leterman house band

I don't think he's the greatest guitarist in the world, I've seen way better, like our favourite midget, but he is good. And the reason I thought of En Vogue is cause I was too lazy to check who it really was and I know Slash was popular around that time.

yeah, our little midget would own slash on guitar.slash have some very nice solos like november rain, sweet child of mine.he ain't much of a rhythm player which is weird because he's black.it was axl who brought inovation to that band, not slash.

headbang Great Post

The thing with Slash is.. (I exactly like Slash by the way) he had alot of great "solos" as a guitarist which made him stand out more. Of course their are more better guitar players. No one is saying he is the best but his good. He manage to hold it down solo and make a name for himself outside of his group which is commendable.

I think Jimi Hendrix is the greatest guitar player personally...

I really don't know if Prince could play those fast leads like Slash did on Appetite. And I can't say Prince has ever had a tone quite as good as on that record either - just sayin' neutral

It's funny when somebody says i don't know if prince can play faster then slash.not only prince can play faster he can play much cleaner.but guitar is not about playing fast,it's about the choice of notes.prince showcased ability to compose better solos on spot then slashes best.for me just my imagination small club plays circles around november rain solo

As a guitarist myself who plays a bit of Prince and Slash, I found learning Slash's solos far harder than learning any of Prince's. Prince is a great rhythm player, but a fairly unimaginative and one dimensional lead player.

Prince does not play faster than Slash, provide proof other you're arguement is redundant. Prince does not compose solos nearly half as well as Slash. Listen to the lead on songs like Locomotive, Coma or Estranged - Prince wishes he could come up with bad-ass shit like that!

Right... they are very different guitar players.... that doesnt take anything away from Prince or Slash... I dont even know why someone would compare them... they dont play the same material.

Mattyjam you want examples of prince playing faster then slash.shhh hong kong rock 2003 after the few bends at the begining of the second solo prince plays clean fast shredding line ,that's much faster then anything i heard slash play.i can name numerous example but go listen rod stewarts version of peach.on this prince cover slash is playing all guitars.listen and tell me that prince didn't compose and execute much better solos on peach.

Slash and prince can be found playing the same material.slash plays on rod stewarts cover of prince"s song peach and slash did a very poor job.i don't think prince is the best guitar player ever, that spot is reserved for jimi but prince can play circles around slash .slash is a second rate copy of steve perry and jimmy page. And for your info lots of guns solos were composed by axl, reead slash's book

Y'know, he's got blues licks for days. But I like guitar players who

can not only string pentatonic licks together but have a solid grasp

of chordal voicing as well.

But I'll always support black rock guitarists: all hail Saul Hudson!

.........................

I play guitar as well and Prince as a guitarist has always been overrated;

he's masterful but definitely not a virtuoso. And I agree with Matty: Prince's

solos (for that matter, Slash's solos as well) are mostly one dimensional -

that is, they both subsist upon the pentatonic scale for the most part. Some

times, Prince will use a Dorian lick per one of his guitar influences, Carlos

Santana.

Prince's background on guitar has more R&B influence than Slash, so Prince

will be able to handle rhythm and chordal voicings whereas Slash is a

blues shredder. I don't think one is better than the other. Slash is faster

and can string together a blues based solo that will sound "cooler" and

"rockier" than Prince but Prince bests Slash's chordal knowledge.

.............................

I don't think Jimi Hendrix was the best guitar player ever. He may be the

most influential but he was kinda sloppy with it live. He had Curtis Mayfield's

and Bobby Womacks' deft touch with chordal voicing and R&B rhythmic playing;

he had John McLaughlin's rapid fire and blistering attack; he could also do that

Spanky Alford style as well. But again, he was a bluesman first and subsisted on

the pentatonic scale - that's one scale out of many which unfortunately limited

Hendrix's musical expression.

But I think it is inarguable that Jimi Hendrix is the most influential guitarist that has

ever lived.

Omigod, there's no way in the world that Slash is a better player than Van Halen -

to suggest otherwise betrays a serious psychological disorder.

Anyways, I saw Slash walking out of that chapel in the middle of the desert in that

music video (y'know the one) and that was it: I had to get a guitar.
