Chilling picture of Whitney Houston dead in her coffin published in National Enquirer

The chilling picture shows the singer lying dead in her golden casket, clad in a regal purple dress and wearing what looks like a diamond broach and earring.

The weekly American magazine has run the snap alongside a bold headline proclaiming: 'Whitney: The last photo!'

It is understood the photograph was taken inside the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark, New Jersey, where her family attended a private wake last Friday on the eve of her funeral.

The magazine claims the photo was taken at the private viewing - although does not reveal who took the picture.

Whitney - who died aged 48 on February 11 - was wearing jewels worth $500,000 and had gold slippers on her feet, according to the publication.

No doubt the image - which was published in today's edition - is bound to stir a strong reaction.

The singer's funeral took place on Saturday and was attended by stars including Mariah Carey, Oprah Winfrey and her co-star from The Bodyguard, Kevin Costner.

She was laid to rest the following day in a burial service attended by close family and friends.

They just showed the photo on The Talk. I bet this particular edition of the Enquier is going to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, edition ever published.

^Okay lol. Its a gang of them, a large number....thats what I call it. I dont know their names or have time to get to know them individually lol. I'm not being mean I just dont have time.

Well, I'm certainly not surprised by it. It think it's kinda tacky to print pictures like that. I remember back in '84 when I believe it was Jet magazine that published Marvin Gaye in his casket. I was really bothered by it.

I think this photo will satisfy a lot of people's curiosity. Whether we want to admit it or not, many people were curious as to how she looked.

Hmmm. I wonder if they asked to do that?! I assume they did. Also his funeral was wide open. Its not right either way but if you are told not to and its clear the mom wanted privacy...why by a rat and sell her out ANYWAY?! No home training.

Now that I think of it I've seen quite a few of those too damn close for comfort casket pics in Jet back in the day!

That's why when banks said what he said in the other thread, I'm like "they can't be punks can they?" Cissy definitely said she wanted privacy. Then again, maybe it was a bad idea to publicize the funeral. I'm still queasy about that.

I'm trying to think if they've done it past like 1994. I dont think I've seen any. They better not put our Whitney out like that!

They did it with James (but that was only because Al Sharpton and the Brown family wanted it like that - and he looked like a ghost ). If it's one picture, I don't put it past them sneaking it in. JET used to have stories with tabloid-like headlines back in the day so nothing surprises me about JET. EBONY was always the most respectful while JET was a little "edgy".

When I first read it it almost sounded like she said they posted the death pic on Wiki... I know no one would be that stupid to do that... hope not anyway. You never know with that site. I bet TUMBLR has her death picture. *shudder*
