Really dissapointed in Aretha. Her legs are hurting but she can play another show hours later the same day? Ree, if you're listenin, you have shit backwards. Sipped Dionne even threw in a slick 'oh....whatever.'

Their not selling out stadiums as single artist. Prince & Madonna both still are doing that "alone". Plus still considered icons. George Michaels is close but iffy. Plus he does not qualify as superbowl ready. Let's keep this about the beautiful Whitney...... will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! Bobby Brown brought his kids. Whitney's step-kids who were more family to Whitney than the celebrities there. That was either before the funeral began or Friday at the viewing. Didn't happen during the service and at the end of the service they removed the casket without incident. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

If I recall correctly, Whitney is to be interred (put in the ground) today (Sunday). So maybe Aretha will be with the family then. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

Interesting. In the video where Whitney's casket was carrying, he looked like he was gonna faint again when he saw that casket again. Did you hear her mother when the casket was lifted? "My baby!" My heart goes out mainly to Cissy and Bobbi.

Thought it was great that the family held the service in their church, and not at some arena. With the video feed, countless fans and well-wishers had virtual access, which was a nice allowance on the part of the family.
The service itself was quite moving, and I echo many of the sentiments felt here, and:
(1) I thought it was in poor taste for the Winans family to turn this into Winans Promotional Hour (2) You could tell that Kevin Costner's remarks were heartfelt; he cared. (3) Clive Davis was all business, just like he was with the partying the evening of 11 February. (4) I'm glad there were no solos by young, talented singers from the church; see #3 above. (5) There might have been more room to seat Bobby Brown and Whitney's step-children if there were 10 less members of the Winans family there. They clearly didn't abide by the +2 protocol. (6) A sizeable contingent of the Drinkard and Houston families don't care much for Patricia Houston (the sister-in-law-turned-manager), who's power hungry and eager to cash in. The way she stroked Clive Davis' ego yesterday was no doubt an attempt to endear herself and ensure personal relevance and cashflow (7) Stevie was awesome; very touching (8) Kim Burrell's lyrical change to "A Change is Gonna Come" was a sermon and a powerful, necessary message.

Aretha Franklin did have a Cissy Houston problem as told in her book FROM THESE ROOTS. Franklin took issue with both Cissy and Gladys Knight for saying in their books that Aretha's mother had abanonded the family. In later years post the book, Franklin and Houston mended their ways as Cissy sang background for her again on some shows on the east coast (Wolf Trap concert to be exact), including doing the high soprano swoops he did on the studio version of "Ain't No Way". In November, 2011 Cissy Houston was one of the singers that feted Aretha for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame series at the Playhouse Theatre in Cleveland. For those that think they didn't speak, Cissy personally asked Aretha to sing at Nippy's funeral. They spoke on the phone after Aretha saw the ticker tape on the tv screem that Whitney Houston was dead. The young girl Whitney used to accomapny her mother to the studio and always said she wanted to be like Aretha Franklin. She was obviously influenced by the woman she called, "Aunt Ree". Be official godmother or Clive Davis machine hyped godmother, there was a relationship. Divaism can cause females to be a bit 'bitchey' and this led to the duo not doing a video for "It Isn't It Wasn't, It Ain't Never Gonna Be". Same thing would happen years later with Mary J. Blige on "Don't Waste My Time". It is what it is. Dionne Warwick and Aretha have always maintained a good rapport and so have Aretha and Nancy Wilson and Chaka Khan, other than that, she is not to female buddy-buddy. The day anyone can ever figure out all things Aretha Franklin, they will probably feel akin to having hit the Mega Millions.

According to the lovely and talented Alicia Quarles (AP global entertainment editor), there were 26 members of the Winans family in attendance.

i stated more or less the same thing in the other thread. each of those people probably did abide by the 'plus two'; moreover, i'm guessing they didn't show up with six additional people on top of the two people they could bring.
i understand that bobby's kids wanted to be at their stepmom's funeral; however, it wasn't their father's call, and he should have respected his mother in law's wishes.

Apparently, if the story is correct, on the day Whitney died, Ray J had ignored her texts or something because he was promoting one of his new shows or something. Once word got out that Whitney had died, he stopped everything he was doing and rushed over to her hotel room (there's pictures of him grieving at the scene) but of course police rebuffed him from entering. Some said Ray J. has since felt guilty for ignoring Whitney for the last two days. Last time Ray was around Whitney was at that nightclub on Feb. 9th. So maybe that explains why he lost it so to speak at the funeral.

I'm sitting here reading some of this bullshit on this site and it has taken every iota of humility in speech away from me as a Christian. Some of these comments about this woman's memorial service and her loved ones who took part are ridiculous, point blank.
People in here passing judgement on the Winans, who took part in memorializing their friend, need to get off their case. How dare you cast aspersions on those people in their time of grief? When your kid or best friend or relative dies, then you go plan their damn funeral the way you like it and leave other people alone.
SO WHAT, they sang the girl into heaven and took their time? Ain't 'chall neva been to a Pentecostal church (which is the denomination the Winans family belong to)? We're lucky that funeral didn't go on with singing and praising and breaking out in tongues til Midnight.
When it's all said and done what it boils down to is: THAT'S THEIR FRIEND, not OURS. people kill me skating in here via keyboard and arm chair judging about who is supposed to do what at somebody else's damn funeral that they don't even know from Adam.
Newsflash : That shit is tacky, played out, and disrespectful to the dead. .
If anybody feels that strongly about honoring Whitney Houston, then damn, write a condolence card, send a donation to one of her charities or to a charity in her name. But let it rest with all this coulda woulda shoulda shpiel because the fact is you don't know any better than anyone that was there- what Whitney Houston would've wanted or expected from her friends & loved ones during a time like this. I don't know and neither do you.
All I do know is that when it's my time to go, I want the people who mean the most to me in good times and bad to pray over my body, ask for mercy and grace from the Savior, and damn skippy , sing me into glory for as long as it takes... and to hell with what anybody from the outside looking in says about it. Praise and worship need not know a time limit, especially from those I don't even know personally who 1) likely don't even know Christ (and when i say know I mean KNOW, as in active relationship with Him one-on-one and through His Word), and 2) people who don't even know me.
I love this board and I dig so many of you here, but it's threads like these that disappoint me and show me how ugly and petty people can be, and for what? It's a damned shame that this is what a person's memorial thread has come to. Not honoring the memory of the person who passed on at all except for the respectful few. Beyond that it's fast becoming layer upon layer of fuckery that does nothing but make the stomach turn
Damn shame. | |

A lot of Whitney's fans don't care for Patricia Houston. I can remember back when "I Look to You" came out and Whitney was doing a phone interview with Tom Joyner. They asked her if she was going to tour and Whitney said no, she didn't want to but they are trying to get her to. You could hear Pat Houston yelling in the background "yes, yes she's going to tour". All she was thinking about was money. Whitney did not want to tour, she knew the risk, she didn't even want to come back really, she knew what the industry was about. Oh and for the record, Forbes magazine has said that Whitney was not broke and extremely wealthy. Now why couldn't they defend her while she was alive when the story broke a few weeks ago.
