I do agree about that. Aretha definitely has had it rough. I guess she didn't feel she needed to be there and actually do grieve in private... and everything said here including what I said was just speculation. But the funeral's over so let's just let Whitney rest in peace finally.

As I said it woulda been cheesy if they had played it in church, on tv it is fine. For lotta people in there her music career mighta been secondary to her personality, nobody wanted to sing one of her songs, guess why?

The song WAS playing loudly in the church.

Additionally, someone did perform one of her songs -R. Kelly performed "I Look To You".

The home going service made me sad. God I will miss her. At least she's resting in peace, no tabloids, media scrutiny, voice concern, fake friends etc can hurt her now. Rest in Peace Whitney. The world was watching her service today. With MJ and Whitney gone, what other black icon do you think would get this kind of coverage? I can't really think of any.

I'm not sure how much in the same manner but Prince, Aretha Franklin, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder would definitly get a high profile treatment even Janet. However, I dont think they all would be on the same level as MJ or Whitney who were more so POP legends while Whitneys was emotional and big it wasnt as huge as Michaels, I think it was alot more emotional though because of the setting being at a church and who they had there.

Aretha Franklin according to her statement via her publicist and her message to Al Roker had every intention of going to the funeral, but after getting in very late from the meet and greet after her sell-out show at Radio City Music Hall, she woke up at 4AM and realized she had muscle spasms in her leg and thought it best to stay off of it as much as possible today to prepare for show tonight. Franklin would have to have gone to Newark, NJ from her hotel in Manhattan at about 10:30AM, then be back in Manhattan by 3:00PM, the funeral was nearly 4 hours - it was a dicey situation. I understand. Ditto for Babyface who wanted to be there, but he has a concert tonight in nothern California and even with a private jet flight of 5 hours to Newark airport and 5 hours back, he would've been pressed, not considering jet lag. Aretha is not a spring chicken and with her recent life-threatening surgery, we treasure she is still with us. I am sure she and Cissy have spoken. I additionally wouldn't be surprised if she goes to the cemetery to pay homage as she leaves The Big Apple to head back to Detroit via her tour bus.

Aretha Franklin is 69 years old and not in the best of health herself. She was close to Whitney and her family, so I know this had to be an especially trying time for her. She's also contractually obligated to perform at whatever concerts she had booked before Whitney's passing. She said, she wanted to be at the funeral and sing but she couldn't because she needs her rest, to keep her moving on.

That's good enough for me and for anyone that doesn't like it...that's just too motherfucking bad! Because they'll be the same ones talking more stupid shit, if Aretha had shown up, turned the church out as only SHE could, still went to her show tonight and Heaven forbid, something tragic happened to her tomorrow.

For all those talking reckless about Aretha Franklin and what SHE should have done, it is my honor to say finger on her behalf!

This part here is what did it for me. Where her song was playing in the church as the pall bearers lifted her coffin. bawl Starts at 3:45.....

I completely lost it when the pallbearers lifted her casket! Oh My Goodness! bawl

Also, during the NAACP Awards, Yolanda Adams singing I Love the Lord! Whew! The Preachers Wife soundtrack got me through a tough time. I always said Whitney Houston sang directly to me.

This was a BEAUTIFUL service and for all that don't know what a Baptist funeral is all about....now they know....SOUL!

For all that only speak of Whitney's personal crisis should not only look at their own problems and faults but KNOW that this young woman was a GIFT FROM GOD. We are human and ALL have lessons to learn in our lives.

The way she past on is truly a divine intervention. The date, the time, the place. Seriously, she didn't say she felt ill. The Lord paid her a visit when she was ALONE. All tasks planned were no longer on her schedule.

R.I.P. truly Whitney. YOU WERE LOVED AND WILL FOREVER REMAIN IN OUR HEARTS.

I love us we know how to put on a real funeral.. Its not about that glitter, glam, hollywood etc... Its about remembering and honoring the past and keeping in mind to put God first in everything like Whitney did. Despite everything that she went through she truly was led by her faith in God and was a spirtual woman. She will forever live in our hearts.. God bless you Whitney cry

yeah, remember Aretha doesn't fly. she has to go by car everywhere. And the funeral being that long... and in order to have a concert I would imagine you have to be there early for mic check etc.

Aretha has had some money problems in the past and I am sure with her staging her own comeback and new tour, she doesn't want to make her concert tour sponsor nervous about her reliability.

At the same time... it is bad that she got on national tv and basically wrote checks she couldn't cash... not just be at the service but to actually perform.

Just announcing that to Al Roker on news program was not a decision based on good judgment... but from emotional grief.

So ... shrug it could happen to anyone of us J give her a pass because all this week I have seen interviews were Aretha was supportive and protective of Whitney.

In all honesty...I really don't understand nor appreciate, these backhanded..."Yea and at the same time...blah, blah, blah..." regarding Aretha Franklin!

The woman most sincerely WANTED TO BE THERE but in the end, she couldn't! Whatever her reasons are really no one's concern but her own. I am more than sure that when Aretha Franklin takes the stage at Radio City tonight. Her LOVE for Whitney will be right there with her. That's more than anyone else should expect of her!

I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I don't know. Something about Aretha... I don't think Aretha and Whitney's family was as close as they lead on. Dionne keeps talking about Aretha as a sister but I never known of Cissy to bring her up. Someone said that she and Cissy had beef and it wouldn't surprise me if Aretha was jealous of her goddaughter's success.

Honestly, it wouldn't surpise me. I think Aretha is very sensitive about her status in the music industry and perhaps may have felt threatened at all of the praise for Whitney's voice especially. I've noticed that when Aretha spoke about Whitney in recent interview, she was VERY careful with her words in regards to Whitney's talent. I've seen her state several times that Whitney knew how to be a real "star" but never really talked about or brought up Whitney's singing talent.

All i've heard her say is that Whitney "could sing" but she seemed reserved or hesitant to praise Whitney's talent beyond that.

I don't know. It could be in my head, but this is the feeling that I get. I don't think jealousy is the reason she canceled though. As you said, who know's why? But I really wished she could have been there.

I feel you. She did the same thing last night with the DATELINE interview. She said Whitney was one of the better young singers. I was like.. what ReRe?

I'm sorry but y'all really need to let that dumb shit go! Aretha Franklin SAID on stage, in front of people that paid money to see HER, this past week...that Whitney Elizabeth Houston was "one of the greatest singers to EVER stand before a microphone!"

Aretha Franklin's mark in musical history was solidified...DECADES before anyone outside of family ever knew of Whitney Houston and Aretha's mere presence...STILL...commands and gets...full audience attention!

Aretha Franklin IS...THE ONE AND ONLY...QUEEN OF SOUL!!! Often imitated but never, ever, ever...as of YET...to this very day...duplicated!

Y'all need to quit tripping over the bullshit and RECOGNIZE!

I was starting to get a little unnerved when it started turning into The Winans Family concert though. They sing good but near the end it appeared that they were showboating...maybe not so much the family as a whole, but I feel that Marvin was.

I was waiting for them to get off..half of the stuff he was preaching about had nothing to do with whitney.

Then you missed the message. Whitney LOVED the Lord and was NEVER-ever ashamed to speak his name on & off stage. Whitney battled her Demons through out her career but she never stopped praising God and her friends, Family and Fans witnessed that.

Marvin's "message" had EVERYTHING to do with Whitney and how she lived her life and what she showed people....

Marvin wasnt suppose to spend 30-min repeating what we already heard for the last 2hrs...His job was to BRING it all together at the end and Preach a lesson about "Life"...Trust me, Whitney would have approved of the sermon...

You need to remember to open yourself up and "listen" to the message instead of shutting down because you're not hearing a person's name every 2-second...Listen to the "message"....It's a life-lesson...

If I may indulge myself for just a moment.

My mother introduced me to the Winans Family with this song...

I vividly remember being awaken out of my sound sleep because my mother would have that song vibrating through every single inch of our home...at the very crack of dawn. On more numerous occasions than I can count!

In the meantime...I happen to KNOW something much different than that!

If you please...my mother wants me to listen to this particular song...right about now. And I believe Whitney Houston would appreciate me doing so and sharing it with others!

Lionel, Phil, hell might as well include Tina even though she was around for two decades before the '80s she was definitely an '80s superstar. Definitely more '80s pop icons still alive.

Alot of you do not know how to read... you just read what you want to read eek

I did not imply their was no 80s star alive still... THEY ARE... but none on the SAME MASSIVE LEVEL AND SUCCESS as Michael, Madonna, Whitney and Prince during the 80s

thats not being biased.. thats a FACT

eek

Also, Tina Turner is not an eighties superstar... Her prime was mostly during the 60s/70s.. just because she continued to do music during that decade doesnt mean she was the most relevant of it.
