I will never figure out why old ladies insist on wearing these dang blonde wigs
But seriously, I was one of those teenager going to the record store signings to get my little autographs when Debarge first came on the scene and blew up; lawd those kids were so young and fine back in the day (though I remember El having less than perfect skin

Juices and berries is from Coming To America. Barber: Got damn boy, that some kind of weave or something? Prince Akeem: That is my natural hair. I have been growing it since birth. Barber: Well shit, what kinda chemicals you got in there? Prince Akeem: I have put no chemicals, only juices and berries. Barber: Shit, that ain't nuthin but an Ultra Perm.

I couldn't go to the local wrecka stow when they were there. Talk about disappointed. That was the talk at school with the girls though. They sure were fine, beautiful people. El had long ringlets of curls, they looked like living dolls, until they opened their mouths

Geez guys...here I am, your handy dandy Tommy spiller and El just blew shit up again.
Damn it's hard to be a De Barge stan! [Edited 3/21/12 18:45pm]

Didn't Gregory Williams say it best about the DeBarge family when he said "they have demons that prove too much powerful for them to overcome"?

Yup and Greg knows where the bodies are buried (not literally...I hope). That cat knew Bobby (in how many ways...including Biblicly?!
I'm not sure, but I think Darrell is the only De Barge male not to have served time. smdh

[Edited 3/22/12 5:32am] will ALWAYS think of like a "ACT OF GOD"! N another realm. mean of all people who might of been aliens or angels.if found out that wasn't of this earth, would not have been that surprised. R.I.P. ![]()

Yeah you're right. Sounds like Darrell is in the straight and narrow at least and is the only DeBarge son to learn from his brothers' and sister's mistakes (I think Carol is drug free too). But yeah Darrell has not served time least I can tell.

I didn't go to the last concert that El did. My friend went to one last year, & said he was really late showing up. Another time, he didn't play at all at a show that a radio station gave. I saw the video posted from the last show, and it didn't look or sound great, IMO. I know El said he was sick, but it was kinda all over the place.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Just leads you to think he couldn't stay sober... suddenly what he went through last year and recently makes sense now.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
So true | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yeah. El's given some interviews on the matter and things like that, but he's very reticent to go past a certain point about things. Given that his mother, sister, and now brother have gone far and deep...I suspect he feels a bit pressed about it all. This guy seems to value his image and dignity, Tommy states this outright in the book. IMHO that's not at all a bad thing because nobody got sober being on a reality show type circus.
El might have been sick at that LA show, but he was also high as hell too. The two aren't mutually exclusive!
Sheesh, I'm mainly a classic rock fan, so addicted stars are not new to me....but this stuff w/ the De Barges is getting a bit extra!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Sobriety is hard for anyone in the biz, but w/ El it's so much more difficult I think. The duration of his addiction is far greater than most, then add all the pressures he's been under wrt his career, then whatever MamaD/baby mama stuff, etc....I think his sitch is even more extreme than most addicts out there. He's a guy who's on the music charts, yet has no place to call his very own home.
Add to this that the combo of drugs he seems addicted to (heroin and crack) are particularly hard to kick.....this was bound to happen if you know the signs.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
He does seem different from the siblings of his who put it all out there. I need to get Tommy's book.
You know, I didn't want to go to the show because I didn't want to chance it. One, El may show up late, & give a quickie show, or just not show up at all. I also didn't want to see him in that state, if that were the case. I didn't write any of that here at the time, because I didn't want to discourage anyone else from going (if that's what they wanted to do). Seeing a half done show with somebody who really does have talent is sad and unfortunate.

I hate to say it but there's too many parallels between El DeBarge and the fates of David Ruffin and Marvin Gaye. In the case of Marvin though, he never served no time for drug possession (but he was probably strongly protected unlike El and David for that matter).
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Nah...not Marvin, PapaD is dead!
Truthfully, I'm more surprised about James than I am about El. I can picture El dealing cuz he seems to have some of the toughness and brass that Bobby had, but James has always seemed too fundamentally soft to do it. Then again..Tommy dealt, so...
Does anyone know what went down between him and the Farmers? I suspect something ain't right w/ his money cuz he's SEEMED to have avoided dealing up to this point.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
I meant with their drug problems lol least El wasn't accused of burning someone with the pipe...lol
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Well El has been popped a few times for domestic violence/assault against women. In fact, El\s 1st arrest was about abusing some girl at a college...it was around the time he CLAIMS he started using heavy. The last time was in 07 (I think it was his baby mama Monica that dimed him) and he lost a kid to the system w/ "Mrs El" (aka Melody)...so he ain't too far from Rick's crack pipe if you think about it.
