wham! wasn't really a boyband though. it was really just a front for george's talents. not to mention there were only 2 "boys" and 2 "girls" (three if you include dc lee), plus don estus and the backing band for live performances. it certainly doesn't fit the profile of "boyband" in the sense people know it. george was the only male who sang, andrew did no vocals, and hardly even played any guitar on the records. george contributed more to andrews solo work than andrew contributed to the whole of the wham! catalogue | |

actually, I want to elaborate.
I've always thought George Michael was a great singer with a very good, distinctive voice. I haven't always liked some of his songs or albums, but overall, he's very good.
I have never liked the song "wake me up before you go-go" - just too "poppy" for me, though he sings that song well. ditto "I want your sex" (I remember all the "controversy" about that song when it came out.. how he had the little "disclaimer" that they would show before playing the video on Mtv..)
the best songs (to me) however stand the test of time & sound as impressive now as they did then:
careless whisper I'm your man father figure everything she wants ("extended" version) freedom 90
I never followed him enough to say - as many others have - that George "took himself too seriously" & so from the mid-90s on his music was inferior compared to the 80s.. I don't know if that point is valid or not..
still, George Michael is 1 of the best singers of "his generation" - like the top 3. maybe the best "British soul singer" of all time??
