1999: Last Year of Reasonable R+B...

Let's put it out on the table, outside of legacy R+B acts from the preceding decades, would it be safe to say the last decent year of R+B was 1999?

Please Name Me R+B Artists that can contend with any of the heavy-hitters from the 90s or before in the following areas?

Solo Male R+B Artist

Solo Female R+B Artist

Female R+B Group

Male R+B Group

Best Solo Album (Male or Female)

Best Group Album (Male or Female)

Production

Songwriting

That is correct, none, the last 13 years haven't had any great R+B songs of consequence, just simply hollow, inept, and lifeless. Each decade has had a style, motif, idea, and the last decade certainly didn't, and this one is following down the same exact path.

Devante Swing said it best, "They missing love". Most of all, from a technical standpoint, you are missing real musicians and arrangers behind the scenes and they've been replaced with "producers" who can't even read, let alone decipher sheet music or lead sheets.

Just a very sad state of affairs overall...

Edit: Only new artists apply for this thread(post 1999), not established acts/groups before 1999.

Maybe you should change your name to dAugmented becaus this argument of yours

needs just that: augmentation.

Raphael Saadiq's last two albums were excellent. Van Hunt's Popular goes toe to toe with

Parade and J*Davey does interesting shit too. There are countless of bands/artists today

making quality R&B music; you're just not looking in the appropriate crevices.

Yeah, augment this argument and get your ass out of the past!

R. Kelly, Aaliyah, Janet, and Mary J. had some good material past 1999. However R. Kelly eventually moved to rap, Aaliyah died, Janet's career vanished, and Mary just began to make bad music.

Doesn't count as artists prior to 1999 were already established and any new music they put out will just simply add onto the quality of their work.

It isn't the past, it is just the truth.

Last decent year would probably be around 1989, not 1999. 95% of everything decent afterwards was house/dance muisc and most of it wasn't on mainstream radio.

Andy is a four letter word.
