Musical artist that pass and there is a lot of press coverage...who will get the media attention when they pass? Michael Jackson. James Brown and now Whitney Houston have all had lots of press coverage in their passing. Etta James, a bit. What musical stars will garner as much or more than the ones that have been mentioned? What a morbid subject. But I'm sure a trouble star like Whitney or Amy will get 10x the press an older sickly star will get like Etta. 2012: The Queen Returns

This is an awful topic.
However, no one will ever get more posthumous media attention than MJ. "You put water into a cup, it becomes the cup...Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend." - Bruce Lee

If they die too young--Elvis, Michael, Kurt, Tupac, Biggie, Jimi, Jim, Janis, Whitney, John--then they are going to get more press. My Legacy

Well of course people who die younger or tragically will get attention. However, I believe in the case of a Michael Jackson or Whitney Houston, they would get tons of press coverage regardless as to if they were troubled or not. Even if they died at 100, they'd get tons of press due to the astronomical level of success and fame they achieved. Same for Madonna.
On the flip side, look at Paul McCartney . He's up there in age. No major scandals. However, if he got sick and passed away (god forbid) say tomorrow, I guarantee he'd get tons of press just because he was a Beatle. So just because you're troubled doesn't automatically mean you'll get a lot of press coverage.
Anyway, I agree this is a morbid subject. It's not a competiton. [Edited 2/14/12 17:50pm] "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ

I know if Paul McCartney dropped dead tomorrow, he would be eulogized in a huge way. Heck, people still memorialize John Lennon in big ways today, even though he died over 30 years ago. What surprised me was how relatively little coverage George Harrison's death got in the media. Granted, he died of cancer, had been ill for some time, and hadn't performed in public for several years prior to his death, but he was a founding member of the Beatles nevertheless, and he arguably had the most eclectic and critically acclaimed post-Beatles music career.

In my country and in the Latin countries, MJ's death was the one that more attention has received and I am sure that there does not exist now another artist who could receive this attention if he dies.
Michael's death was so big, it is impossible that someone equalizes this effect. Beside being a good artist, it always was so media, everything what towards was generating expectation, was one of the most famous persons. Even in life it had more attention for good or for badly, more than any famous other one.

Pretty much to the general public, people associate Paul McCartney and John Lennon much more with The Beatles than George Harrison. Ringo Starr is recognizable for his outsized personality, IMO.
Speaking on the present day and depending on the circumstances, I would say that if they passed away right now some of the iconic artists and music industry-related people who would get massive media coverage a la Whitney Houston are (subject to change and in no particular order): Paul McCartney Bruce Springsteen Quincy Jones Aretha Franklin Bob Dylan Stevie Wonder Smokey Robinson Mick Jagger Barbra Streisand
Obviously, if some of the younger, contemporary popular artists died today it would be big news, so I'm excluding the likes of Britney Spears, Beyonce, Usher, etc. [Edited 2/14/12 16:36pm]

Elton John is an obvious one I overlooked. I also would add Diana Ross and B.B. King to the list. [Edited 2/14/12 20:46pm]

What bugs me is how MJ and Whitney (and others) were looked at as nothing more than the butts of jokes in their final years, then they pass and suddenly they're Gods again. Why didn't you show them that love when they were still here?
It disgusts me how fucking fickle and fairweather people are.

I personally believe it depends when they die. Madonna, if she dies age 70 is not going to get the same publicity like if she dies now.

Put it like this. If Your death is a shock, a HUGE shock, You will get a lot of attention.
I agree with what one who said No one would get as much attention as MJ. I mean he damn near shut the internet down. I think Janet would get massive attention too, not just because of her being a legendary superstar, but because MJ and Janet were the biggest/ most talented stars in the whole Jackson Family. So once she's gone, that's it.
Britney would get a lot of attention as well, but mainly because of the amount of controversy she has caused.. like Madonna.
i dont like this thread =/
