Others have commented on it already, but all of these commercially successful "modern soul divas" have faded into the background after their big hit record. Norah Jones, Duffy, Gabriella Cilmi... you could add even Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu to that list. I have hard time believing Amy Winehouse could have kept her popularity on the same level, for that matter.

I think it's just because female artists just are treated as a product by their record companies and they are also treated like a product by the record buyers. People buy these type of records because they want a break from all the teeny pop, but I don't think the vast majority of those buyers will ever develop a true appreciation for decent music in the end.

Sounds like a smart move to me. In some ways, I'm surprised by some of the responses here to her plans to take a break (...and in many ways not). If you're gonna take a 5 year break, immediately after sweeping the Grammy's sounds like a good time to do it. Go out on top, leave 'em wanting more. I think she's a very gifted singer, and young. In 5 years she'll only be 28. At the Grammy's she spoke about having learned "Quality Control", and I believe that taking some time between albums is part of that process. Look at how long Stevie Wonder takes between albums. I see that as part of his formula for longevity (...and no, I'm not comparing the talent of Stevie to Adele, although again; I think she's an awesome talent). In any event, I don't think she'd ultimately take a full 5 years off anyway. But if she did, I don't think it would hurt her in the long run.

I wouldn't count Norah Jones out either.

Adele debunks five-year break claim: 'I'm straight back in the studio'

Published Wednesday, Feb 15 2012, 09:00 GMT | By Daniel Sperling

Adele has backtracked on her claim that she will take a five-year break fr...king music, revealing that she is heading "straight into the studio".

The 'Someone Like You' singer, who collected six Grammys at the weekend, told fans that she will be recording new material shortly after her appearance at the Brit Awards on February 21

I've a few days off now, and then it's the Brit Awards here at home and then I'm straight into the studio," Adele wrote on her official blog. "BOYYAHH! 5 years? More like 5 days!"

Adele also opened up about her triumph at the Grammy Awards, describing Sunday's (February 12) ceremony as the "most incredible night of [her] life."

"Oh goodness! I'm absolutely flabbergasted," she continued. "I keep having flashbacks to Sunday night. The most incredible night of my life. Thank you to you all, I am so overwhelmed, it's the strangest feeling. I have constant butterflies and goosebumps, it's wearing me out but I LOVE it!"

Adele apologised for forgetting to thank several important people when collecting her awards, explaining that she was "totally unprepared" to win.

"Despite the phenomenal year, I swear I didn't think I had any chance," she said. "All the categories were full of people I adore with brilliant songs, records and performances. So not in my wildest dreams did I think to actually prepare anything proper to say just in case."

Adele recently described her recovery from throat surgery as a "really peaceful" time.

And there goes her chances of hitting it big with her third album too. She's gonna be like another Norah Jones.

And I'm so surprised to see so much support for this on a site for a man who release an average of one album every year.

[Edited 2/14/12 14:20pm]

Jones is a multimillionaire who calls her own shots and has effectively postioned herself so she doesn't have the pressure of topping herself every time. Seems to me like she did it right.

And I think many, many folks on this site wish Prince would take a little longer to work on some of his recent output.

Adele is cool, i don't think she trying to be anyone but Adele .... I do however thing she has had a number of thinks going for her....

1. She sings with an RnB/Soul voice and she's a White Girl

2. She British

3. This should be number one .... She follows on the back tails of the - Game Changer "Amy Winehouse" .. she would never have won this many Grammy if it was not for Amy!

4. Her songs ...she writes most if not all of them and they are from her soul ... it shows in the music and sound.

5. Most US "modern" female pop singers can't seem to produce more than one good album of orginal writing / songs

First off....what is wrong with most of you people?????

Adele is extremly talented and a great singer!!!! This CD is awesome!

Not some BS pop-shit-hop crap but a real singer singing real songs!!!!

HELLOOOOOOOOO!!!

Well i'm glad she reverted on her position and will be back in the studio soon...

Adele is a great talent and I for one (and maybe the only one on the org) look forward to hearing more from this incredible singer.

PERFECT comparisons. I can remember all the overstatements about their abilities too. And now look at 'em. Winehouse (to a certain extent) and Joss Stone are the only ones of the recent "white Soul" group whose voices had lasting potential, but they, of course, were dogged out. confused

And I disagree about Lauryn and Erykah though. Their output and/or popularity were pretty steady for about 10 years before they faded in the background.

I didn't mean to imply that Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu were bad. I probably prefer Erykah's newer stuff over what she did on Baduizm.

I just think they were female artists that were hyped quite a lot at the time. The marketing departments got a lot of people interested that weren't usually interested in the style of music they were making. It might have even had more to do with how their type of female artists are pushed forward in lifestyle magazines - especially those read by women - rather than how they are written about in the music press. It seems that there's always a new female artist around that's sold to the masses as offering something "more real" than what the rest have to offer. Then she's more or less forgotten and replaced with another female artist that is supposed to be "more real" than the rest.

A few of you know, from threads in 2009/2010, I'm good friends with Adele, and as far as I'm aware, the five year thing in a load of bollocks. She is loved up with Simon, and the time off with the throat gave her a chance to get back to the real world.

I spoke to her a couple of weeks ago and she was looking forward to getting back to work.
