the statement was a bit sarcastic, it was more a duo knocking stuff together in the studio than a real band, but in the 90s they had a surprising success in the UK with a number of hit singles, mostly based on the same 3 tracks that were remixed umpteen times. the jamms was the earlier slightly hip hoppy house based sound whilst the later KLF stuff was more house/techno. they also worked with the orb and remixed stuff for the pet shop boys and had a few other psdenums such as K2 plant hire and they had a hit single with gary glitter called doctoring the tarding by the timelords which was number 1 in the UK. they also did one of the first and bet chill out albums of all time called "chill out", made an unreleased/unfinished movie the white room and then burned a million pounds on an island in scotland after deleting their back catalogue and emptying their bank account, and they filmed it and showed it on telly. when they played the brit awards they performed with thrash metal band extreme noise terror but they weren't allowed to leave a dead sheep on stage as planned
