Lauryn Hill on the Death of Whitney Houston

“Aren't you tired of losing our people?” Lauryn Hill asked the sold-out crowd just before singing her last song of the night. “I am.”

“Love your artists,” she continued. “When they falter, hold them accountable. But love them. People are now showing Whitney Houston the love and respect she should have received throughout her career — through all of it.”

Feb 16 2012

NEW YORK (AP) — They won't be there in person, but singer Whitney Houston's millions of fans worldwide will be able to share in her homecoming service Saturday as they watch her private funeral on the Internet.

It will provide a much-needed connection for fans who have lacked a formal place to eulogize Houston, one of the world's best-selling artists who died in Beverly Hills, Calif., on Saturday at the age of 48.

^Wow are you serious? If you don't like it leave. No one is asking you to be concerned. Whitney brought joy to millions around the world. And if you don't it that's tough.

I wake up, first thing in the morning and I'm greeted with nonsense. Not even fucking 7:00 am.

Anyway, is the funeral going to be television or only online? I'm confused.

WHITNEY'S FAMILY TO BOBBY BROWNKeep Your MittsOff Your Ex-Wife's Fortune!

Cissy Houston is aggressively trying to block Bobby Brown from getting close to 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina
Bobby Brown
is about to make a money grab by leeching onto his daughter, the sole heir to Whitney Houston's fortune -- at least that's what Whitney's mom and other family members believe.

Family sources tell TMZ ... Cissy Houston is aggressively trying to block Bobby from getting close to 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina, fearing it's just a ploy to line his pockets.

The family is convinced ... Bobby is broke, and he's making a play for his daughter's affection to latch on to what could be an estate worth around $20 million, and that figure could double by the end of this year.

As TMZ first reported ... Bobby tried to visit his daughter earlier this week, but the family shut him down.

We're told friends of the Houston family have already contacted Bobby and warned him he is persona non grata at Whitney's funeral and in Bobbi Kristina's life.

There's a lot of bad blood between Whitney's family and Bobby Brown, because they believe he was the driving negative force in her life that led her down the substance abuse path. They also believe he's largely responsible for Bobbi Kristina's drug and alcohol struggles.

As for Bobby Brown ... people in his camp tell TMZ, he's well aware of the family's animosity toward him and wants to bury the hatchet for the sake of his daughter.

There are reports that the positioning of her deceased body was not of one in the tub under water. A theory is as you stated, alcohol, pills go into bath with turkey sandwhich in tow, and she collapsed into the tub dead. A guest above room 434 at the Beverly Hilton stated she heard two loud thumps and then a man's loud voice.

The thumps or thuds could have been her falling into the tub or the kicking in the door. She was found by a woman they all called "Aunt Mary" (Jones). Who allegedly screamed out when she found her body after the late singer had been in the bathroom over 30 minutes. With the pills she was taking, the amount alcohol she was consuming - equal death sentence instantly. Guests at the hotel say she wreaked of the smell of alcohol and cigaerettes during the week at the hotel. The dya befotr she died she told people she was going to see Jesus soon. Based on her faith, she expired the next day - so accoring to her beliefs, guess she made that trip.

If she has slipped under the water, wouldnt there be water in her lungs? even if she went into cardiac arrest and died instantly some water would have traveled into her lungs. That should have been found during the autopsy.

Little water was found in her lungs so they dispute the claim that her death was due to drowning. If it had been drowning, they would've told the family that they were under the impression that she drowned. And that if she drowned then she may have bumped her head in the tub, got a massive head injury and then died as the water filled up the tub and her face was submerged. From the timeline of events, I'm getting an accidental overdose due to a lethal mix of alcohol and pills.

What would you do to intervene with someone you couldn't talk to or was belligerent?

Knock drinks out of their hand all night?

You can't want it for them more than they want it for themselves.

Remember that. It will save you a lot of grief and guilt.

yeahthat I think many people who want to call Whitney a victim should tune in for an episode of the A&E show 'Intervention'. Many of those addicts have very sad backstories but at the end of the day nobody is forcing them to do the drugs and at those interventions the ones who love them the most always have to let them know that if they continue to use they will be cut out of that family member's life forever and left to wonder the world alone. It sucks to have to divorce a loved one but it sucks even more to just stand back and watch helplessly as that loved one slowly kills him/herself from drug addiction. At the end of the day, Whitney was an addict...all the awards, fame, and fortune really shouldn't blind anyone to that fact. It's very sad how her life ended but it was preventable and she was her own worse enemy in the end for not realizing that the drugs and alcohol were not her salvation...sobriety was and she wasn't able to maintain that salvation and save herself from an untimely death. sad

As I said, I wouldn't have to confront anyone, but I would find a way to help a friend--even to save her from herself.

I don’t want to continue this line of discussion because it finally occurred to me, perhaps it was being taken the wrong way as in disrespectful even though it wasn’t my intent at all.

But in response to this comment, my opinion is that she didn’t have to die at this time, and there are a number of people—not necessarily in the media or on the internet but out in the real world who agree with me. I’m not necessarily a fan of Whitney’s but it’s just sad for me to see a human being sort of walking into a train without anyone trying to stop her—at least that’s the way it seems. I’m not talking about past attempts at rehab, I’m talking about all the supposed friends and paid people in her entourage not appearing to have the guts to intervene—rather pouring her another drink akin to giving a diabetic a big bag of sugar to eat. As I said, it’s a mystery to me.

It’s true, ultimately Whitney may have died under similar circumstances since she seemed to have lost the will to fight her beasts, but I still believe she didn’t have to die last weekend.

So I’m sorry, again I say, we’re just going to have to agree to disagree.

At least now, her fight is over.

Will Bobby Brown Be at Whitney Houston's Funeral?

Reports of tension between Bobby Brown and Whitney Houston's family about his attending her funeral, scheduled for Saturday, are inaccurate, a source close to Bobby Brown told ABC News late Tuesday.

TMZ reported that Brown was being frozen out of the service by Houston's family members, but a source told ABC News that Brown has been contacted about going.

In response to those reports, Brown's rep released a statement today saying, "Any report or statement that does not originate from my office about Bobby Brown or his representatives, is not authorized by Bobby Brown. We are not focused on reports, stories or false reports for that matter."

One of Houston's family members confirmed to ABC News Tuesday night that while many people in the family don't want Brown to attend the private, invite-only, Saturday funeral, they can't stop him because of his daughter with Houston, Bobbi Kristina. She was hospitalized for stress and anxiety after Houston's Saturday death.

"My daughter Bobbi Kristina is doing much better," Brown said in an email statement to ABCNews.com Tuesday. "We continue to provide love and support to Bobbi Kristina. She is dealing with the tragedy of her mother's death and would prefer to do it outside of the public eye. I ask again that our privacy be respected."

Many of Houston's friends and family have left California for New Jersey. Ray Watson -- Houston's brother-in-law and bodyguard -- and more family members are back in the Garden State. Bobbi Kristina was thought to be in New Jersey with her mother's family but the Brown camp said Tuesday she is still in California with her father and other siblings. While Bobbi Kristina is Brown's only child with Houston, he has five other children from different relationships.

Hope this hasn't been posted. Its one of her tunes that really helped me during troubled times (as well as "Step by Step" and "The Greatest Love of All"). However when I heard it recently it didn't build me up like before, it was totally the opposite. With her passing it gives off a new meaning to me 'like the river finds the sea I was lost, now I'm free...'

Whitney Houston’s Chilling Comments On Michael Jackson

In a 2009 interview with Oprah Winfrey, Whitney Houston was asked how Michael Jackson's passing affected her -- and the singer's words are particularly chilling given her own untimely death at age 48.

The King of Pop died at age 51 from a lethal dose of the anesthetic propofol in 2009.

Houston told Winfrey that his passing was "devastating".

With her voice shaking, the troubled songstress added, "I thought, 'This can't be true. This can't be true.' I knew he was on painkillers at one time. I didn't know how far and how deep it was."

Houston recalled taping Michael Jackson's 30th Anniversary Celebration with the King of Pop in 2001. Both stars appeared extremely frail at the event.

The singer remembered looking at Jackson and then looking at herself. "I was getting scared," she admitted. "I was looking at myself going, 'No, I don't want this to be like this. This can't happen. Not both of us.'"

Houston —- whose own substance abuse issues have long been documented -— revealed to Winfrey that she had been doing drugs at the time of the Jackson taping.

She said she "was worried" for him -- and for herself. "Mike and I were very close," Houston said.

"No one have I ever met [was] quite like that young man," she later added. "And to have it in like that saddens me."

"Was he a mirror for you," Winfrey asked Houston.

"In some ways, yes," the diva replied. "I didn't want to go down that road."

Like Jackson, Houston was on the verge of a career comeback before her Feb. 11 passing.

A coroner's official says Houston's body was discovered underwater in a hotel bathtub (some prescription drugs were in her room).

It will take weeks to determine precisely how the megastar died.

A private funeral is set for Saturday in the New Jersey church where Houston first showed off her singing talents as a child.

Inside Whitney Houston's last recording session

Five days before her untimely death (cause as yet unknown, but a lethal combination of drugs and alcohol is suspected), Whitney Houston was in the recording studio working on new music. The song, “Celebrate,” was written by R. Kelly and slated to play over the end credits to "Sparkle," Sony Pictures’ forthcoming feature about a girl group formed by three teenage sisters, one played by American Idol winner Jordin Sparks, who duets with Houston on the track (though they did not record it together).

On Tuesday, Feb. 7, she arrived at producer Harvey Mason Jr.’s North Hollywood studio at around 5:30 p.m. ready to work. “She's doesn’t lounge around,” Mason tells The Hollywood Reporter, still speaking in the present tense some 72 hours after Houston’s body was removed from her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton. “The last session we did on Tuesday night, after we finished, we were dancing around the booth and laughing and just having a good time listening to what we had accomplished. Her demeanor the last two weeks was very upbeat. She was in a good place.”

Musician slams Clive Davi...ossal pig'

Houston recorded two songs for "Sparkle," the other a gospel standard called “His Eye is On The Sparrow,” and her voice, observed by many as shaky in recent years, was holding up for the most part during Tuesday’s four-hour session. “Certain days are better than others,” says Mason. “On Tuesday it was pretty good. We had been working on that song for a couple days. It took extra work because it's a duet. We weren't so much worried about the singing. We were spending more time on making sure the flow was right between the two artists and that each had their moment in the song.”

ANALYSIS: Why 'I Will Alw...imate song

Indeed, Mason, who had worked with Houston since 1998, says that unlike most superstar artists, especially the so-called “divas,” Houston was happy to share the spotlight. “She was really adamant about making sure Jordin had enough time to shine,” he says. “She kept saying, 'Let Jordin shine, that's her moment.' I thought that was pretty cool. She loves the new crop of singers. She's not the kind of girl who's competitive and mean to other singers.”

But if another attempt at a musical comeback was in the works, you could say Houston was looking at another uphill battle. While 2009’s "I Look To You" sold well, with almost 1 million copies purchased in the U.S., landing at No. 29 on the year-end Billboard 200 chart, Houston’s inconsistent live performances made it difficult to stage a proper promotional blitz and a hit single did not emerge from the 11-song collection.

Whitney Houston's final d...old demons

Still, Mason defends the album’s performance. “Anytime you can go platinum and sell a million copies, you've accomplished something spectacular,” he says. “I have a plaque on my wall from that record that I'm very proud of. I can't compare it to "The Bodyguard's" twenty million or some of those older records. It's such a different time. But if you're asking me, did it accomplish everything we set out to do? I would say that I think it's a great record. I'm not in control of what happens to the music once we turn it in to the label. Creatively, we did a great job. She did amazing work on the record. She was proud of it, and so was I.”

As 2012 rolled around, Houston was amped about new projects. She was keen on nabbing a seat on the "X Factor" judges’ panel, for one. According to a show insider, Houston had reached out to "X Factor" brass that same week expressing her interest in the position. A meeting with Simon Cowell was set up for Monday, Feb. 13, two days after she died.

She was also excited about "Sparkle," the movie in which she acted, sang and was an executive producer. There was also talk of a sequel to "Waiting to Exhale" and a new solo album. “She wanted to talk to Clive [Davis] about that,” says Mason, referring to Sony Music’s chief creative officer and Houston’s lifelong mentor. “That's something I recognize coming away from this production -- she really had a lot coming up and a lot of things that she was looking forward to.”

Their time in the studio last week, says Mason, was just like any other of the many sessions he had done with the diva. “She comes in, warms up, does a couple vocal exercises, usually says a prayer, listens to the song, asks me what I need and then she goes in the booth and we just work,” says the producer, who has also worked with the likes of Mary J. Blige and Beyonce. “She’s always a sweetheart to me,” he says, shifting into present tense again. “We get along great. We sometimes argue in the studio, but we always have a good time. She's fun-loving and we laughed a lot. We listened to a lot of music. She's such an amazing singer and always has been one of the best singers we'll ever know. My whole objective is to make her shine.”

Mason’s last image of Houston was of the superstar singer dancing in the studio, looking happy and full of life. It’s an appropriate farewell for a singer who, he says, “cared so much about making great music” and loved her fans. “I remember she was always, like, 'I've got to do something better. I can't disappoint the people who buy my music.' Whitney had so much passion and energy and love for what she did… The best. The best.”
