I agree with what you say. Official statements and funeral attendances by peers in showbusiness also gives them for once the opportunity to show them huble and normal as opposed to glitz, glmamour and stardom. As a Prince fan I surely wouldn't mind to hear Prince talk, sometimes this is what fans expect. He covered a song by Amy, now this is the last person I'd have really cared for. He shoulda been at the MJ funeral and JB..

He's a cold brotha..just sayin... lol lol

What can Prince say that hasn't already been said?

I would imagine, he's not happy about Whitney's passing. I'm sure like a lot of people of faith, his only comfort is that she's in a better place--free to sing all she wants. Otherwise, I would think he's not happy how things turned-out for her... any more than Chaka is happy about it.

I don't think Prince has to say anything: as I said, sometimes silence says it all.

^^ I know you've got a "lol" after that bolded statement, so I think/hope you're not all that serious, but seriously it's this kind of judging of people is part of the problem not the solution. As many already said, his silence is preferable to the self-promoting, insincere soundbites people are putting out. Why is he a "cold brotha" - because he didn't express his sorrow to strangers like you and me? He didn't make public statements about the death of his own parents and his own child - so that must mean he actually felt nothing, because he didn't make a public statement about it? When your loved ones die, are you going to cry your eyes out to strangers in 140 characters or less? oh, puh-leaze...

When Winehouse died, he was on tour, so a song tribute was natural. Maybe a Whitney song will be covered at one of his concerts in the future, just as he's done "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough." But whether he does or doesn't, I'm tired of people assuming the worst about people - like that he banned Whitney from his concerts (a false report) or that he "condemns" people who are on drugs. His own sister was an addict, whom he helped. We don't know this person Prince, we don't know Whitney either - how can you make personal judgments about people you don't know? These are real people, not just celebrities.

Were Prince and Nippy friends? I don't ever recall them mentioning one another and, except for when she made her way up on the stage last year at one of his shows, I've never seen them together. If they didn't have a close relationship or if he wasn't a big fan, I really don't see the need for him to release a statement about her.

Governor Orders New Jersey Flags Lowered to Half-Staff to Honor Houston

Feb 14, 2012

With a funeral service for the late Whitney Houston scheduled to take place in Newark, New Jersey on Saturday, Gov. Chris Christie says he is planning to order flags to be flown at half-staff in the singer’s honor.

“Obviously, Whitney Houston was an important part of the fabric -- the cultural fabric of this state,” Christie told reporters at a press conference Tuesday, saying that Houston “belongs in the same category” as Frank Sinatra, Count Basie and Bruce Springsteen – also artists born in the Garden State.

“Her accomplishments in her life were a source of great pride” for the people of New Jersey, Christie added.

The governor said his office has been in contact with Houston’s family for details about the services and that he will hold off on signing the executive order until he has the particulars.

Christie ordered that flags be lowered to half-staff last June after the death of Clarence Clemons, a member of Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band.

I mean, I understand why that question was posed but my thing is people grieve differently. Elizabeth Taylor and Diana Ross who happen to be MJ's close friends chose to mourn his death privately.

And like Identity mentioned earlier, Prince never spoke publicly about his parents death, hell, even in his music their passing was mentioned inexplicably. His way of paying tribute is usualy pretty subtle and understated.

Yes, of course there is no reason for him to speak publicly about it. Nobody is calling for him to do so except his fans who want to hear him speak about ANYTHING. Whitney's fans don't care what Prince has to say about her though.

But since you asked, I always thought he was a fan of hers. He made a comment about her on one of his old web sites, when the rumors first started about her. Something to the effect of "leave Whitney alone, she looks and sounds great in her new video"

I also remember her singing at an award show that he was at, and they showed him in the crowd during her song, eyes closed, tapping his foot, obviously into it.

Twelve Favorite Whitney Houston Songs

Feb 2012

"You Give Good Love" (1985)

Summer, 1985: "You Give Good Love" introduces the world to Whitney Houston, a great pop singer with the voice of a great soul singer. This quiet-storm ballad was all over R&B radio (not the Top 40 stations yet) and VH1 (not MTV yet). It was a lot steamier than the rest of her debut album, with that salacious title and a video to match. But even from this first taste, anyone could hear that she had a voice to remember.

"How Will I Know?" (1985)

This was her real breakthrough hit, the one that everybody liked. Although Whitney dominated the radio with ballads like "Saving All My Love For You" and "The Greatest Love Of All," she oddly saved her most soulful vocals for this bubbly Eighties synth-pop confection, loosening up with teen-angst lyrics worthy of the Smiths (very similar to "This Charming Man," actually) and state-of-the-art glitz-funk. The girl rolls out virtuosic whoops and growls and mmm-hmmms, while paying witty homage to her godmother Aretha Franklin.

"Saving All My Love For You" (1985)

Talk about crossover – Whitney performed this one on the quintessential 1980s kiddie sitcom Silver Spoons, singing it for blonde heart-throb Ricky Schroeder. Of course, she changed the line "We’ll be making love the whole night through" to the marginally more kid-friendly "We’ll be holding each other the whole night through."

"So Emotional" (1987)

"I don’t know why I like it," she moans at the beginning. "I just doooo!" This was a more smooved-out version of the teen-hormone dance-pop of "How Will I Know?" or "I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)," with some great lines like "When you talk, I just watch your mouth." If Whitney’s taste in material was still sketchy, that was somehow part of her gawky charm, kind of like her dancing. Whitney was already firmly established as one of the Eighties’ megastars – what we didn’t know was that her true greatness was ahead of her. Ain’t it shocking what love can do?

"I Will Always Love You" (1992)

Whitney’s greatest performance, covering the country classic by Dolly Parton, toasting every money note. The fire in her voice was something new – she couldn’t go back to teen pop, so she doubled down on adulthood with ballads like this one. In her blockbuster movie The Bodyguard, it’s the song on the jukebox when she first dances with Kevin Costner, although in a version sung by John Doe, of the L.A. punk band X. Everything Whitney’s voice ever promised, this single delivered – it was a shock to hear her finally belt a song worthy of her pipes.

"I Have Nothing" (1992)

After years of being the pop singer with the soul voice, Whitney suddenly turned into a great soul singer. The Nineties were Whitney’s prime because she evoked adult misery with so much warmth and strength – in "I Have Nothing," she sounded fully committed to every line, which would have been unthinkable a few years before.

"I’m Every Woman" (1992)

One key factor in Whitney’s creative takeoff: Mariah. Whitney knew she had to sing for her life if she wanted to keep her throne, because she knew (as Gina Gershon would put it in Showgirls) someone younger and hungrier was coming up behind her on the stairs. So give Mariah credit for throwing a scare into Whitney, and give Whitney credit for rising to the occasion with a grown-and-sexy hit that she knew Mariah couldn’t touch. She turns the Chaka Khan disco classic into a surprisingly sisterly throwdown, even shouting out Chaka’s name at the end.

"Queen of the Night" (1993)
This isn’t one of her more famous songs, but it’s a special fan favorite – Whitney goes glam-metal. It’s the only time she sounded like a big Ziggy Stardust fan, but maybe once was enough.

"Exhale (Shoop Shoop)" (1995)

This ranks right up there with "I Will Always Love You" as her proudest moment, a warm, compassionate, plainspoken ballad written to order by Babyface. The Waiting to Exhale soundtrack was basically a Babyface concept album about adult romance, an album that holds up as this great songwriter’s finest work – but he was smart enough to save the best song for Whitney.

"Heartbreak Hotel" (1998)

The 1998 album My Love Is Your Love was Whitney’s first full album in 8 years, and it was heard at the time as the 35-year-old Whitney’s crowning achievement, calling in young hotshots like Rodney Jerkins and Missy Elliott to pay their respects to the queen. As Rolling Stone said, "The former ingenue has some grown-up scars now, singing the marital blues with a bite in her voice that she’s never come close to before." On "Heartbreak Hotel," she sounded bitter, mean, furious – and utterly confident that she’s going to get over.

"My Love Is Your Love" (1998)

Her lightest, sultriest hit, with a reggae touch from producer Wyclef Jean. The relaxed tone in her voice was a new style for Whitney, and it promised more great things to come. In "My Love Is Your Love," our girl sounded like she’d come through the fire and figured herself out. We all assumed she would go on on making records this great every couple of years, forever.

"Million Dollar Bill" (2009)

Whitney’s last shot was a return to the original Eighties game plan, except at this point, her vocals were too ravaged for either pop or soul. The retro-disco pulse of this song (cowritten by Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz) made the most out of what she had left. Even if the magnificent voice was gone, there was still a glimmer of the will, and most of us still hoped she had more music in her, on whatever terms she could manage. But as the old song said, that was just an old fantasy. "Million Dollar Bill" spent just one week on the Billboard Hot 100 – at #100 – and then dropped off. It was Whitney’s last hit. Where do broken hearts go?

I wanted to grieve first before coming on here cuz Lawd knos the org can be a hot mess at times and folk love to talk shit about the dead.

Anyway, I loved the Whitney of the 90s. Been watching her vids on MTV Jams and so many brought tears to my eyes. She was so incredibly beautiful and talented and her voice was one of a kind.

Even though Bobby Brown is not one of my fav people talent-wise and looks wise, he made Whit happy for a time so I hope that at least in that respect, the media won't blame him for her death.

Blessings to Bobbi Kristina as she is too young and too vulnerable to lose her mother. I'm reminded of Tina Marie's daughter and her heartache after losing her mother too soon.

As for people saying Prince should speak. Damn give that shit up. Prince doesn't have to open his mouth every time one of his contemporaries dies. I'd prefer it if he didn't say anything. I'm leery and weary of all these celebs opining about Ms Houston's passings. Where the hell were they when she was fighting her addiction and losing her voice?

RIP Whitney and Godspeed.

I believe they were cool... Shit she told him onstage after he changed his name that she still was going to call her friend Prince and he just smiled... During his Act 1 tour at Radio City he didn't start the show until after Whitney and Madonna took there seats.. so i believe they were cool.

CNN has reported over the last few days several times that Whitney had sold over 170 albums Worldwide in her lifetime.

But yahoo reported:

"Although she sold 22.6 million albums in the U.S. in her lifetime — half of those through the best-selling 1992 soundtrack to "The Bodyguard" — her latest release, "I Look To You," sold just 978,000 since its debut in 2009, according to Nielsen SoundScan."

http://news.yahoo.com/whi...10535.html

So does this mean (170-22.6= 147.4) she sold 147.4 million outside the U.S. or is somebodys figures off??? confused

HELL NO. Whitney has over 170 million World Wide. In the U.S. she's at like 53.5 million or something like that. The only females ahead of her in the U.S. are Mariah, Madonna, and Barbara.

Those might be her soundscan numbers which was introduced after her debut..
