this is why WHITNEY will always be THE VOICE.

this was track was originally written for Janet Jackson.

This was written by George Merrill and Shannon Rubicam, who record as Boy Meets Girl and had a hit in 1988 with "Waiting For A Star To Fall." George and Shannon were a romantic couple, and secured a record deal with A&M Records after writing a batch of songs together and playing the Seattle club scene. They spoke with us about this song:

George: "They asked us to write for Janet Jackson's next record, so Shannon and I went to work and came up with our song How Will I Know, which was sent to Janet Jackson's people. They passed on it because it wasn't right for her at the time - she was in the midst of doing her Control album.

Shannon: "It wasn't right for that, but then our publishing company played it for Gerry Griffith when he was in Los Angeles gathering material for the unknown Whitney Houston. He loved it, sent it to Clive (Davis), and Clive said, 'We must have it.' And we said, 'Whitney who? Clive who?'

George: "Shannon and I had our first record deal, so we were caught up in Boy Meets Girl land, and the idea of writing for other people, this is pre-Whitney Houston and pre- our understanding of songwriting for other people, so it was really a big deal when they wanted to hold onto this for Whitney Houston. Then we started checking into it and thought, well, this could be kind of a neat deal. Our good friends, brother team Alan and Preston Glass, called us where they were working with Narada Michael Walden. They were recording Whitney Houston on 'How Will I Know' and they said, 'Guys, you've got to hear this.' They played it over the phone, and I swear, her voice, hearing the first take of How Will I Know on the phone we knew we were on to something special, too."
This is a very innocent song where Houston sings about trying to decide if a boy she likes will ever like her back. It went well with her wholesome image early in her career.
Shannon sang the demo, which was done in a sweet, light, R&B style suited for what Janet Jackson was recording before her Control album. Narada Michael Walden, who has also produced for Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey and Lisa Fischer, went to work:

Shannon: "Narada added his very punchy track and he did some rearranging on it and got us involved in some writing on the song. So it really was far more powerful than the demo we did and it sounded gorgeous and fun."

George: "He had an idea for taking some of the music of the chorus and making a verse out of some of it, and as Shannon and I heard it, we thought that sounded like a cool idea, and Shannon jumped right in on the lyrics."
The backing vocals are by Whitney's mother, Cissy Houston.

This is School ...... Damn that woman was talented ..... what a voice!

Sad that the record companies will make back all the money that spent and then some on the news of her death.....

I'm not so sure I agree that it was a matter of time, necessarily. A lot of celebrities come back... There have been probably more who've come back than not, actually.

Look at Bonnie Raitt--she had a major drug and alcohol problem from what I understand. The story goes... that Prince wanted to work with her or something like that? He showed an interest in her, and this was one of the reasons she cleaned up.

Another thing I was thinking about: didn't Jim Morrison of The Doors die in the bathtub, too? I was talking to some of friends about it, and they said a lot of people thought he died of an overdose, but he actually died of a heart attack--not that his declining health may have been related to the abuse of drugs and alcohol. But technically... he had a heart attack. Whitney could have had a stroke...or some acute event?

I do think the prescription drug thing has gotten out-of-hand. To me... when a doctor prescribes an anti-depressant, he/she should be monitoring the patient.. any patient. On the news last night, one report mentioned Whitney was getting refills from the same pharmacy Michael Jackson used?

I think there needs to be an investigation as to how the heck she was getting these prescriptions, and she didn't seem to be monitored at all? If it does prove to be an accidental overdose, I hope her family does an investigation.--similar to Michael Jackson's--although his death was clearly the result of medical malpractice. If Whitney was getting all these medications that in and of themselves could have caused her death much less drinking alcohol on top of it, then some questions need to be answered.

I understand.. as Chaka said, Whitney was a "grown ass woman," but a lot of grown ass women and men need some sort of supervision and structure, medically.

I think Celine makes some very good points. It looked like the interviewer wanted to shut her up, and perhaps rightfully so because right now "how" and "why" Whitney died is all purely speculation.

But at the same time, Whitney's had her struggles. She's been a butt of jokes FOR YEARS, unfortunately. Talent aside, it's just like with Anna Nicole Smith. Nobody cared when they were all laughing her on a reality tv show. But now everybody seems to care.

It's too little too late, in my opinion. Just imagine if all the public energy everyone is putting into mourning her death would have been channeled to helping her while she were alive. Just from my brief observation, it's as if Whitney was treated like some crazy aunt at a party or something--just sort of placating a very bad situation.

I understand, much of it is beyond anyone's control. Ultimately, Whitney was a grown ass woman. But I don't think that strategy worked too well. In my heart, I feel like something more could have been done. If everything had been done but to no avail, then I could accept the "grown ass woman" reasoning.

It's time to quit saying, "Well that's just the way it is," because that's not the way it has to be. I think it's time to hold more of these "hangers-on" accountable and responsible--particularly doctors who are supposed to be "professionals."

I mean, here Whitney had a huge "entourage" to take care of her, I assume? On the surface, she's was probably PAYING them to protect her--to attend to her needs, right? It seems to me, the reality may have been she was paying them to enable her which is a huge difference. I don't think medical professionals in particular should be "enabling" their patients. It would be like giving a diabetes patient sugar while at the same time prescribing meds.

I just think there needs to be an investigation to find out exactly what has been going-on.

Whitney Houston's family prepares for funeral

By Ashley Hayes, CNN
updated 8:26 AM EST, Tue February 14, 2012

eek http://www.cnn.com/2012/0...ostpopular

-- A hearse and a large police procession arrived just before midnight at a New Jersey funeral home that is handling the funeral arrangements for singer Whitney Houston.

The hearse was escorted by police from Teterboro Airport to Whigham Funeral Home in Newark late Monday as a large crowd gathered. Cissy Houston, the singer's mother, was waiting inside the funeral home, police said.

Cissy Houston is "overwhelmed but strong. Her faith is getting her through this," a close friend of the family who was also at the funeral home said Tuesday. The friend asked not to be named because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Whitney Houston, 48, was found dead Saturday in her suite at the upscale Beverly Hilton, just hours before she was scheduled to attend a pre-Grammy bash at the hotel.

And as Houston's grieving family members prepared for her funeral, the exact cause of her death remained a mystery.

Despite widespread media speculation, a Los Angeles County coroner official Monday downplayed the suspicion that drugs played a major role.

Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter said that "not many prescription bottles" were found in the singer's room after her death. The amount of medications recovered by investigators was less than what is usually present in deaths attributed to overdoses, Winter said.

"I know there are reports that she maybe was drowned or did she overdose, but we won't make a final determination until all the tests are in," he said. Winter ruled out foul play and said there were no injuries to Houston's body.

The singer's soaring voice and impressive talent had taken a back seat in recent years to her struggles with drug addiction. However, said the close family friend, Houston was "no longer an addict," meaning she was no longer using "hard drugs." The friend said Houston was taking medication for a throat infection and Xanax for anxiety, as well as medication to help her sleep. It wasn't uncommon for her to have a drink when she went out, he said.

He said he had seen Houston about two weeks ago in New Jersey, and she told him, "I'm at a comfortable place in my life."

The friend said Houston had been "clean" from hard drugs for three years and had not used cocaine or marijuana, and added that her family is upset by media coverage focusing on her history of drug problems.

Houston's body was released to her family Monday after an autopsy was conducted in Los Angeles Sunday.

A funeral service will be held Friday or Saturday in New Jersey, according to a source close to Houston.

Authorities have not released a cause of death pending toxicology tests, which should be available in six to eight weeks.

"We do not know (the cause) yet," Winter said. When it is known, the coroner's office will notify police and Houston's family, he said.

Beverly Hills police have requested a "security hold" on the coroner's report, a common practice in high-profile cases that limits what can be revealed about an investigation while it is ongoing.

Asked how long Houston had been dead before she was found, Winter said she was seen alive within an hour of her death.

Winter confirmed reports that Houston was found in the bathtub of her hotel room. "I believe somebody removed her from the bathtub and the paramedics did CPR on her," he said Sunday.

Houston's 18-year-old daughter, Bobbi Kristina, was in the care of her grandmother Cissy and her father, Bobby Brown, the close family friend said Tuesday. Houston and Brown, an R&B singer, divorced in 2007.

On Monday night, Aretha Franklin, the singer known as the "Queen of Soul" and Houston's godmother, honored her at a concert in Charlotte, North Carolina, according to CNN affiliate WSOC.

Franklin called Houston "one of the greatest singers that has ever stood before a microphone," and sang Houston's smash hit song, "I Will Always Love You," the station said.

A singer who participated in an impromptu duet with Houston at a party two days before her death said Monday that she noticed nothing amiss, and said the superstar was "upbeat and joyful."

"What I saw on Thursday night was not erratic behavior. I didn't see someone who was high," said Kelly Price.

Price said the party was held to celebrate her Grammy nominations. During the party, Houston took the stage unexpectedly and sang a hoarse rendition of "Jesus Loves Me" with Price.

Price told CNN's "Starting Point" that Houston's voice is "naturally raspy," but "she sounded good on Thursday night."

She acknowledged that Houston did have champagne, which "was flowing" at the party.

"She was in good spirits leaving the club," Price said. "Yes, she was a little messy, as I was, as every other person was at 2, 3, 3:30 ... in the morning after having sung half the night, danced half the night."

Bobbi Kristina Brown was treated for stress and anxiety twice following her mother's death, a source close to the family said. She was taken to Los Angeles' Cedars-Sinai Medical Center on Saturday night and again on Sunday.

Kim Burrell, a gospel singer and Houston's friend, said she was with the teenager late Saturday and said the girl had felt "overwhelmed." But Burrell expressed confidence that "she'll pull through."

Bobby Brown was swarmed by media when he arrived at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday night after pulling out of a performance with his group New Edition in Nashville in the wake of the death.

Brown did not take any questions and was whisked into a waiting limousine.

The night Houston died, Brown was openly emotional during a concert in Southaven, Mississippi, said attendee and CNN iReporter Moshiu Knox, asking people to say a prayer for his daughter, for his mother and "for me, because I'm going to need it."

"Bobby was crying during his performance and at one point had to walk off stage," Knox said.

Brown released a statement Sunday saying he was "deeply saddened" by his ex-wife's death and expressing thanks for "all of the condolences."

Five Songs That Couldn't Exist Without Whitney Houston

Link

Mariah Carey: "Vision of Love" (1990)

Five years after Whitney's debut album, Mariah's first single appeared — produced by Houston's collaborator Narada Michael Walden, modeled on the sound of hits like "Saving All My Love for You," and spotlighting a performance clearly inspired by her melisma-heavy vocal technique. (The last could be said of a lot of Carey's songs.)

Christina Aguilera: "Ain't No Other Man" (2006)

It'd be cruel to compare Christina's infamous performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner" to the masterful Whitney version, so let's not go there. Instead, observe the fleet, ornate flourishes that appear in every extended syllable of Aguilera's vocal here, and consider that their pedigree in uptempo songs like this can be traced directly to "How Will I Know."

Jennifer Hudson: "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going" (2006)

At the Grammy Awards the night after Houston's death, it fell to former American Idol contestant Hudson to pay tribute to her with "I Will Always Love You." Hudson's breakthrough recording was this tour de force from the Dreamgirls soundtrack; her interpretation owes as much to Whitney barnstormers like "The Greatest Love of All" as it does to Jennifer Holliday's 1982 hit recording.

Beyoncé: "1+1" (2011)

Before Whitney, great pop voices mostly got over on tone and interpretation. She changed the game by putting her virtuosity right up front — her death-defying feats of melisma, leaps between registers and technical precision inspired a generation of vocalists. Beyoncé grabbed that baton and ran with it; this torch song is wall-to-wall Houstonisms.

Jessie J: "Domino" (2011)

British singer-songwriter Jessie J claims that her recent hit was directly inspired by listening to "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" — which she's also been known to cover onstage. "I [wanted] to write my version of that in this day and age," she told British radio station Capital FM. "It's such a happy song, it makes me smile."

Hold up . . . .

Who are you to say Whitney had no business drinking?

How much did she drink?

It hasn't been established that any of those drinks were hers. She wasn't alone in the suite all afternoon.

Who are you to say she can't be in the bathroom more than 15 minutes alone? Why?

Not a recovering addict that just got out of rehab.Plus I'm not just talking about in the hotel either.Whitney was drinking in other places also. Her ex bodyguard also said they never use to allow her to take a bath.Only a shower for 15 minutes. Because of all the possible things that can happen to her....Don't get mad at me or Chaka. Actually this is what Chaka said

Chaka Khan TALKS Whitney's Death, Says Clive Davis Should Have CANCELLED His Party!

Music icon Chaka Khan stopped by Piers Morgan's CNN show last night where she disagreed with Clive Davis saying there's no way Whitney would have attended a party if one of her friends had just died.

She would not have wanted the music to keep playing. Get the deets inside.....

Chaka chatted with Piers Morgan last night and opened up about the death of friend Whitney Houston. She said that Clive Davis' pre-Grammy party was "insanity" with one half of the room partying and the other half in tears. She added that she can't imagine Whitney would have said that "the show must go on."

Chaka revealed Whitney was the kind of woman who who has said, "I won't be there," if one of her friends died. She interestingly added that she blames whomever flew Whitney out to LA for a full week before the Grammys for what happened. Talking about her own addiction, Chaka said entertainers are vulnerable and there are too many temptations in LA for someone like Whitney to be there for a FULL week with pretty much nothing to do except party.

Meanwhile, Whitney's body has been flown to New Jersey, via Tyler Perry's private jet, where the funeral will be taking place at the Prudential Center. Watch the clips below:

Whitney Houston's funeral shifted to New Hope church from Prudential Center By REUVEN FENTON Last Updated: 10:50 AM, February 14, 2012 Posted: 10:16 AM, February 14, 2012 More P

Whitney Houston's funeral has shifted to the church where she got her musical start. An official with Whigham Funeral Home, where Houston's body was taken last night, told The Post that the funeral will be held Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church in Newark. It's scheduled for noon.

Yesterday sources said that Houston's final venue would be the 19,000-seat Prudential Center, also in Newark. But last night Houston's family made it clear that they wanted the funeral in a church, said Carolyn Whigham, of Whigham Funeral Home. WABC-TV reported that it was her mother, Cissy, who was at the funeral home until 2 a.m., who drove the decision.

Whitney Houston's body arrives in a golden hearse at Whigham Funeral Home in Newark last night. The funeral will be invitation-only, Whigham said. Houston began as a choir girl at New Hope. The shift in venue came as her family was divided over where the superstar singer should be buried, according to a new report. Cissy Houston and cousin Dionne Warwick wanted to bury Houston in Atlanta, where they believe she was happiest, TMZ reported. Cissy's position was: "Michael Jackson did not want to be buried in Neverland, and Whitney did not want to be buried in New Jersey."

But other family members wanted Houston buried in Newark, where she was born, TMZ reported. Whigham said the burial wouldn't be in Newark but wouldn't say where it would happen. "They thank all of the fans and friends and the media but at this time, this is their private time.," Whigham said. "They have shared her for 30-some years with the city, with the state, with the world. This is their time now for their farewell for their daughter, mother." "Even though we are the funeral home, and the funeral directors, they are our family and we are grieving along with them," she added.

Well... she very well have been a "party head."

But the deal is I really think some people exploited that behavior for their own gain... or that just seems to be the danger in show business.

It's bad enough there are greedy, numb nut fame whores out there doing anything they can to ride the coattails Whitney's celebrity... and she MIGHT let them because they tell her what she wants to hear.

But to me, it's a completely different story when so-called medical professionals prescribe a variety of drugs, each having their own conflicting side effects...without any seeming supervision whatsoever?

Then on top of that, her entourage should know she is taking these prescribed drugs since they were in full view apparently. But then she's out drinking it seems to excess at least on one occasion? Hell, she could have died from alcohol poisoning alone much less taking prescription drugs on top of it.

What in the hell is she paying them for...really? And I realize Whitney was ultimately responsible for her own destiny... but I ask again: why the hell was she paying an entourage to seemingly take care of her then? Not a single person in that entourage could have intervened?

If she were my friend or family member, I sure as hell would want to know how the hell did this happen--even if she DIDN'T die from an accidental drug overdose. The bottom line is I would want to know how the hell she was out partying while at the same time on some pretty powerful prescription medication?

And by intervene, I mean a member of her entourage could have called the hotel doctor if Whitney was uncontrolable and uncooperative. Nobody--not one of her so-called friends or paid employees could see this was a potentially dangerous situation, mixing alcohol with those drugs? Somebody could have called the treatment center she probably paid a shit-load of money to. She was an "out patient, " apparently... not doing so well in L.A.

At one point, somebody has got to stand up to try at least.

All this outpouring of affection.. and not one person tried to intervene.. all the while knowing Whitney just got out of rehab not long ago, right?

He supposedly may not have caused the problem, but he certainly exacerbated it.

And it seems her marriage lasted as long as it did only because of their daughter. Some mothers don't want to split up their families because of the turmoil their children may experience, despite how horrible their husbands are. But finally, per what these people are saying on TV now, it took Bobbi Kristina herself to convince her mother to divorce. I totally believe that.

Whitney and her family have always been private, unlike the Jacksons. I'm glad they're having a private funeral at the church she grew up in. That's where I want to be layed to rest.

^^^ They did have something in common. Like attracts like. People need to stop blaming Bobby Brown. Chaka said if it wasn't Bobby, then it would be somebody else. A person will do what a person wants to do. Jennifer Holliday said Whitney was doing what she was doing even prior to Bobby. They were married a long time, & lasted longer than many Hollywood marriages.

Exactly. "All water seeks its on level."

I written about this before...

A couple of years ago Ms. Houston was in a very bad way, so much so this a newspaper rag editor said, they had her on "death watch"... his words. Jamie Foster Brown (Sister to Sister) was also on that show and she said, Ms. Houston told her she had started messin' around with drugs in high school and her drug use intensified when she worked in modeling.

I respect Cissy's decision to have a private funeral, however i liked that The Jacksons and The Vandross family allowed the public to participate in the funerals. If they had a public Memorial at the The Prudential Center in Jersey I would have tried to go and pay my rspects but this weekend 7 of us from the org will be in Minneapolis at The Revolution reunion show..

I haven't been sleeping well these past few months and as a result, I rarely ever dream anymore.

BUT...last night I had the most vivid dream that I've had in years.

I was at a house/offices of Whitney's childhood church, and was led upstairs to the "attic" where she still lay dead on the floor. She was visibly pregnant. There was some intrigue as to her death since I was led to a closet where a bagful of papers had been overlooked by the police, as I was given a cryptic note with a message that she'd written right before her death (that I can't recall right now).

shake

ANYWAY...it was very vivid and I awoke this morning on edge.

Just thought I'd share.

You dream, you just don't remember them.

I work at trying not to remember my dreams. I no longer want to see them.

Apparently you need to dream for mental health, but not remembering works for me.

All that unreleased/unresolved material from the unconscious will find a way to express and reveal itself. Open yourself up to your dreamlife, it's much healthier.
