George Harrison ~ My Sweet Lord You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I adore this song Because of their half-baked mistakes, we get ice cream, no cake; all lies, no truth; is it fair to Kill the YOUTH ~~ Party Up

this is one of those songs that gives me tingles from head to toe. when I'm drunk, I'll often subject this to whoever might be around, and then force them to sit and absorb it with me in the most pretentious, ponderous way imaginable.
love it! | |

Best solo Beatle composition bar none IMO "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

absolutely. John & Paul were out of their minds limiting George's work to a 2-per-album basis. they should have been killing to get this on a Beatles record.

For my money, George's post-breakup high points trump theirs easily. Yes, that's saying a lot. Yes, I know he was stockpiling the good stuff, but still... My Sweet George... I love the man!
My Sweet Lord is a great song, but not his best... my personal favorite: Beware of Darkness

Here's George performing it on a TV show. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

This is the re-recorded version that was released on the remastered version of the All Things Must Pass album. [Edited 2/13/12 13:21pm] You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Never been a big fan of the re-recorded version. Why mess with perfection? "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Around that time (2000), George said that if he could, he would remix some of the songs All Things Must Pass because he felt the Phil Spector mix is too loud and has too many instruments. I guess George wanted it to sound more like the demo versions. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I know, but I disagree with him. He may be crazy as all get out (and possibly a murderer), but I always find myself backing Phil over the Beatles. He improved "The Long and Winding Road" and his mixes are a huge part of what made All Things Must Pass such a great record. Anybody — even the songwriter and performer himself — who thinks stuff like "Wah Wah" should be stripped back is flat-out wrong. "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

Even if it's a ripoff, it's a great one!
I sang this once at karaoke, and the Hare Krishna part did not go over that well I played it up real big "Everybody! Hare Krishna, sing with me!!" My Legacy

Don't let Paul hear you say that. I think Paul was the main person behind Let It Be...Naked. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

George later bought the publishing for He's So Fine. I guess he recuperated his court costs. I know. Every time I force myself to listen to that version, I think, "This would be really nice with some strings." "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

You should be allowed to ripoff songs for free if you can take something like this:
and change it into something as transcendent as "My Sweet Lord." "Whitney was purely and simply one of a kind." ~ Clive Davis

I was reading an article about Delaney & Bonnie (who George worked with in the 1960's) in a magazine, and according to it, George knew he was copying He's So Fine. Morris Levy sued John Lennon over Come Together. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
