I Guess A Luther Vandross Appreciation Thread...

I was listening to some old songs I liked the other day on youtube and came across some video of Luther live at Wembley and really just fell in love with his voice like never before.

Now my dad is a huge fan but I no longer live at home so not knowing where to really start I picked this up since it's live and I decided to invest my time discovering his music while listening to like performances... But where do I go from here? what's a MUST own?

1. "Never Too Much"
2. "Here and Now"
3. "Take You Out"
4. "Love Won't Let Me Wait"
5. "Superstar"
6. "Stop to Love"
7. "If Only for One Night"
8. "Creepin'"
9. "I'd Rather"
10. "A House Is Not a Home"

11.

"The Glow of Love"

I'm not really into Luther's stuff under his own name. I like a few of his songs, but I prefer the songs he did as a session vocalist for 1970's groups better.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I like his stuff from the 80s, that's where he was at his true peak!

You can't go wrong with his "golden" period from 1981's Never Too Much to 1988's Any Love.

If you can find this essential collection, swipe it up! But trust me, you need those original albums from '81-'88...

Its weird seeing this thread I was playing some Luther a couple of days ago. He has to be my favourite vocal male singer of all time, his voice just makes me melt. Some of his songs I can't listen to coz they make me cry especially Dance With My Father. Hes missed sad sad

Love these from the London concerts, so wished I went!

For a person just really getting in2 Luther, I recommend people start with the following albums. They are all great in their own right and contain most of his well known and recognized material.

The Night I Fell In Love

Never Too Much

Busy Body

The Best of Love (greatest hits) and/or The Essential Luther Vandross

Give Me The Reason

If you like what you hear on these albums, you'll want to get his entire catalog. I see the Love Luther box set is posted, however, I don't care for that one as a starting point. I think it was poorly put together overall. There is some rare material on there, but it doesn't really capture the essence of Luther to me. It just mostly concentrates on the hits.

I like a lot of the work he did as a session singer, but those songs aren't really "Luther-ized" per-se. He was just working as a singer and sang what was put in front of him.

Now, if you can find his first two "Luther" albums (released on Cotillion records), they are a good also. He wrote and produced most of the material on those. Don't expect them to sound like his solo work, but they are good.

Another suggestion is to NOT start off with any album after 1991's Power of Love. All of the albums after 1991 were Luther trying to win awards and cross over. Not saying they are bad albums, but they may scare off an up and coming LV fan.
