Today music on pop charts is much better then it was in the last 15 years and more Music elitist will say otherwise but i think that current synth pop is much more interesting then faux r'n'b. Songs contain stronger melodies, much better and faster beats and great synth sounds. Jesse J song Domino have rhythm guitar as dominant instrument.when have you heard guitar on pop charts? Lady Gaga and Katty Perry have sax solos in their songs. Everything is more interesting that lame slow r'n'b with lame rappers.

What this current generation is missing is a truly AWESOME talent.
Where's the Prince
Michael Jackson
Bruce Springstein
Madonna
U2
D'Angelo
Metallica
The only one I can think of is Lady Gaga, but she's hampered by the shadow of Madonna. Everyone sounds the same. All those Boys Against Girls All American Rejects Plain White T's soundalike bland faux pop-rock bands? Please.
I have a fondness for techno for reasons unknown so I can groove with anything influenced by it. But this current era is sad.

No its not, mainly as very little of it is original. Lady Gaga is a crass Madonna wannabe and all the rappers are straight out of 1995 Death Row or 1997 Puff Daddy. And long haired guitar/metal nonsense has been around for donkeys years. Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

As far as Pop and Hip-hop/Rap goes, there hasn't been much change, if any, in the last 15 years.

this is not true.last decade was timberland doninated and since then come new acts influenced by the sounds of yazoo, human league and 80's pop. Beats are faster and music is more Europe oriented

No it's not bait thread. for example the bue print for what was hot in charts was a lame ass weak beat with rapper and a girl who sings the chorus. That kind of formula ruled the charts since late 90's until 2008,2009
in 2008 one of the biggest hits and number one in Usa was Owl City Fireflies. Can you imagine Fireflies being a hit in 2001? no way.
The artist that rule the charts today are not bad at all compared to what was going on in a first decade of new milenium. We have Lady Gaga,Adele ,Jesse J ,Katty Perry. i find lot of the songs by these artist to be very good. Songs like Rolling in the Deep,Edge of Glory,California Gurls, Friday Night,Dinamo are miles better and interesting then the weak shit hop of Downtempo Timberland beats or Jay'z formula rapping. It's hard not to notice big change on charts in the last few years because euro influenced music is all ruling the charts. Even r'n'b artist are going with the euro sound.
Pop music is not what i listen to but this is my objective observation.

I disagree with OP on downtempo, but "the case can be made."
1997 v. 2012. I'd take Biggie over any MC charting right now, but other than that, the music that charted in 1997 . . . is it REALLY as good or better than what's charting today? Unless memory fails, I can't say yes or no. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I wasn't even thinking about the timeline when I wrote that. The thread is about how great music is today. I was just pointing out that I can't think of anyone that is truly great. I can't think of anyone from 1997. Can you?

not great,better | |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Nope, at least none who were charting, which was the OP's argument.
BUT, looking at 1997, Radiohead (OK Computer) Badu (Baduizm), Jamiroquai (Travelling Without Moving), Common (One Day It'll All Make Sense), Camp Lo (Uptown Saturday Night), and of course, Biggie (Life After Death) all put out good-to-classic albums. Not so sure they charted. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Totally disagree. I find the theme/tone/style of today's music to be insurferable, and am hoping that this ridiculous electro/euro/dance pop fad dies a harsh death. It's really the only use I have for Adele. Don't care for her music at all, but at least it ain't thumpa-thumpa Gaga/Katy/Ke$ha. Music today has become cheesy, dorky and weird. I'd take what was happening in 2001-2008 over 2009-present in a heartbeat.

Agreed. I love the electronic Euro-Dance/pop direction popular music has taken in recent years. The pop charts are definitely much better than they have been at certain points in the recent past. * * *

Oh lawd, not this again:
There is no particular decade that was devoid of shite music.
There is no particular decade that wasn't devoid of shite music.
You will always have good music and bad music and so-so music.
It is impossible to point out to a particular decade and describe it as better than the next: if you don't believe me, try it.
Stop creating these goofy threads.

Unholy thank you for contribution. And no it's not true that music is always balanced.in the first decade of 00's you had much more garbage then today. Also if you go further back in the past 60's 70's and 80's had much better music on charts then it was in the 90's 90's wete one of the rare examples of artist without real direction. Makarena, spice girls, that's 20time worse then ketty perry

90-94: AMAZING
95-96: ok
97-99: a bit dull
00-03: good
04-10: ugh
so all I see it's an improvement over 04-10 (and maybe better than 97-99), but that's all...

Show us the billboard charts you reference. And then explain why those entrants are better/worse than those you think the opposite.
